Anton Dalmata je bil do leta 1556 duhovnik v Huminu; iz Nem~ije je s pomo~jo {irokega kroga prijateljev {iril knjige po vsej Furlaniji, v Gorico in v smer Istre. Nicolas Pichler je po{iljal knjige iz Beljaka preko Trbi`a in doline reke Bele v Humin in Furlanijo. Po isti poti so v avstrijske de`ele prihajale tudi italijanske, nem{ke in slovanske knjige. [e ob koncu 16. stol. so bile knjige, tiskane v Urachu, zaplenjene v Gorici, Gradi{ki in Devinu. Zaradi tega so v Furlaniji poznali Trubarja celo protestantje italijanskega jezika. Leta 1567 je videmska inkvizicija radikalnega protestanta Bernardina della Zorza iz Vidma postavila pred sodi{~e, ker je slavil »na{ega velikega preroka Primo`a« in ga primerjal z Luthrom, Janom Husom in Girolamom Savonarolo.     Fondazione Aquileia : Innovative tools to bring new audiences to an archaeological site © Gianluca Baronchelli • Access to culture • Attractiveness of the territory • Digitisation • Education • Intercultural dialogue • Better governance Context With 1,230,000 inhabitants, the Friuli Venezia Giulia region has always been an important meeting place of cultures between Western and Eastern Europe. The regional economy mainly relies on small and medium sized enterprises specialised farming and tourism. The town of Aquileia was founded by the Romans in the second century. At that time it was a major European city and counted 100,000 inhabitants. Today only 3,500 live there and the population is ageing. Aquileia is a rural town with an economy based on agriculture. Despite its small size, Aquileia is home to various cultural organisations, thus offering a vibrant cultural context. Aquileia’s archaeological site has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1998. The site includes the remains of ancient houses and paved roads, numerous mosaics, residential neighbourhoods. revealing the city’s urban history, late antique walls, market structures, burial places and a basilica complex. Some of the remains date back from the first century BC. Culture, creativity and tourism are a specific priority area within the “smart specialisation strategy” developed by the Friuli Venezia Giulia region as part of the 2014-20 ERDF operational programme. The region foresees developing and consolidating local cultural and creative industries. Organisations, such as the Fondazione Aquileia, active in the fields of archaeology, restoration of mosaics and stones, architecture, graphic design, communication and ICTs will be supported by this policy.

INTRODUCTION In the Shadow of the Balkans, on the Shores of the Mediterranean IN the border zone between Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia known as the Julian March reside members of families who were divided and scattered at the conclusion of the Second World War when Italy and Yugoslavia parti- tioned the region. These separated kin live on the fringes of the Gulf of Venice, an inner body of water making up part of the Adriatic Sea, which today divides populations as much as it once united them. Triestine writer Claudio Magris’s description of the forests in this region hold equally true for its seas: “The woods are at once the glorification and the nullification of borders: a plurality of dif- fering, opposing worlds, though still within the great unity that embraces and dissolves them” (1999, 107). Though the fluidity of the sea would appear to defy any attempt at sover- eignty, political borders cut through them. Indeed, the Adriatic’s waters have witnessed the struggles of diverse powers—in more distant epochs, Venice, Austria, and the Ottomans and in the last century, Italy and Yugoslavia—to se- cure and police the adjacent territories. The most recent example involves the dispute between Slovenia and Croatia over precisely where, in the tiny Gulf of Piran, to draw the maritime frontier between those two states, which declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.
