There were new faces this year, new members for whom this was a new experience – Pete Smith, son of Tom Smith (23 Squadron), Chris and Heather, whose father Francis Jones served with 192 Squadron, and Liz Ingham, daughter of author Ron James, who recently re-published her father’s writings. All new members were made very welcome, and we do hope you enjoyed your time with us and we’ll see you next year. There were also a notable number of families who came to share the occasion … the Forsyths, the Barrons, the Dobsons, the Witts, Linda and her parents … It’s a wonderful feeling to know that the stories of those who served under Bomber Command during the war in RAF 100 Group are being passed on through generations, to remain a living memory for all who come after. -

Thank you so much to everyone who sent cards and gifts and surprises to us over Christmas. There are far too many to mention you by name, but you know who you are, and I will say that each and every one was valued together with its sender. It really does show what a true Family we are. And there were so many lovely letters written by hand amongst them that I’m still catching up … so forgive me if you haven’t yet had a reply. I promise one is on its way! I also received a card from Horsham St Faith where, each year, we gather for the final event of our Reunion each year, a very special Service of Remembrance with a village tea to follow before saying our fond farewells. The card wished members on the Association a very Happy Christmas, and every happiness for the New Year. -

C ONTENTS TO J UNE 2017 AIRFIELD REVIEW The Journal of the Airfield Research Group The journal was initially called Airfield Report , then ARG Newsletter, finally becoming Airfield Review in 1985. The number of pages has varied from initially just 6, occasio- nally to up to 60 (a few issues in c.2004). Typically 44, recent journals have been 48. There appear to have been three versions of the ARG index/ table of contents produced for the magazine since its conception. The first was that by David Hall c.1986, which was a very detailed publication and was extensively cross-referenced. For example if an article contained the sentence, ‘The squadron’s flights were temporarily located at Tangmere and Kenley’, then both sites would appear in the index. It also included titles of ‘Books Reviewed’ etc Since then the list has been considerably simplified with only article headings noted. I suspect that to create a current cross-reference list would take around a day per magazine which equates to around eight months work and is clearly impractical. The second version was then created in December 2009 by Richard Flagg with help from Peter Howarth, Bill Taylor, Ray Towler and myself. -

We had intended to meet up again this year as she would have been 60 in April, I was already 60 so we thought it would be a good time to do it. Mary leaves two daughters and three grandsons. Mary & I wrote to each other from 1968 when she left PRS, over the last few years it was a note at Christmas and in birthday cards but nonetheless was lovely to hear from her. Mary told her daughters that when she was at PRS it was some of the best years of her life, funny how most of us feel that way. -

A Night Long Forgotten - 18th April 1944 At around 2300hrs on 18th April 1944 three members of the 384th took a shortcut – a shortcut that would lead to their deaths and ultimately the deaths of three Royal Air Force crew too. S/Sgt David Ollre, Cpl James Moore and Cpl Teddy Potocki – all three members of the communications section of the 384th Bomb Group – were cycling back to base. The assumption is they were returning from Geddington, possibly even the Star or the White Hart after a pleasant evening relaxing, when they turned to take a shortcut across the airfield presumably back to their billets. We can’t be sure of the exact route they took however what we do know is it took them across the 5000ft East / West runway. At the same time an RAF Short Stirling of 1657 Heavy Conversion Unit (HCU) was completing a series of night time ‘touch and goes’ – also known as ‘circuits and bumps’ – as part of a student training syllabus for new RAF Bomber Crews. The Short Stirling was the first of the RAF’s four engine bombers but by this stage of the war had been overtaken in performance and available numbers by both the Avro Lancaster and the Handley Page Halifax and generally retired from front line duties. Those aircraft retired now found themselves filling the essential role as the last part of the training programme for new crews to gain experience in operating large and complex aircraft similar to those they would be expected to fly over occupied Europe once fully fledged Bomber Command Aircrew. -

If they persist at it this time, we will soon no longer have any fuel production worth mentioning. Schweinfurt - The Battle Within the Battle for the U.S. 8th Air Force Capt David Reichert, USAF After the war, Hitler’s minister of armaments and economics, Albert Speer, said, “The strategic bombing of Germany was the greatest lost battle of the whole war for Germany.”1 Such was not the consensus thinking early in the war, though. Commander of the Army Air Forces, Gen. Henry “Hap” Arnold, had sent one of his best generals and closest friends, Gen. Ira Eaker, over to Great Britain to start what would come to be known as the U.S. Eighth Bomber Command from the ground up. In a push to prove not only to the British but to the world that strategic daylight bombing was the instrument needed to bring Germany to its knees, Eaker sent out over one-hundred missions during the next year-and-a-half, aimed not at the civilian populations of Germany but instead at targets that were supposed to cripple the German war-machine. Facing criticism from both home and abroad over his seemingly slow pace of operations and unnecessarily high casualties, Eaker launched the most daring offensive of the war, sending over one thousand bombers into the air during a one-week span in mid-October, 1943. This week culminated with the second attack against the ball bearing factories in Schweinfurt, Germany, in which over sixty B-17s and six hundred men never returned home. Despite the high losses and unspectacular bombing results, the raid on Schweinfurt did help the war cause by making the policy makers finally realize the urgent need for long-range fighters to escort the bombers deep into enemy territory. -
