4 | August/September/October 2017/5777-8 Vol. 110, No. 1 www.templedehirschsinai.org WELCOME NEW LEADERS Welcome Rabbi Callie Schulman By Rabbi Daniel Weiner, Senior Rabbi We are immensely proud to welcome a new member of the clergy team: Rabbi Callie Schulman. Rabbi Schulman is a native of Portland and a familiar presence at Temple, having served as a Temple Camp song leader and Assistant Director of Education prior to entering rabbinic school. She is a graduate of Scripps College and recently served as Associate Rabbi at Peninsula Temple Beth El in San Mateo, CA. Callie is a gifted guitarist and singer, with a special passion for youth/adult education and forging interfaith relationships in the community. Callie shared that, “I am extremely excited, but also deeply honored to be able to come back and serve this community that helped me grow in a very important time in my life.” She is enthusiastic about working with the Tribe, our successful young adult group, for its “robust idea of what it wants to do…[and its embrace of] innovative ways…to make Judaism engaging…” Rabbi Schulman’s portfolio will concentrate on social justice, The Tribe and working closely with our youth, in addition to the myriad responsibilities of serving a large, diverse, two-campus congregation. This will provide a fitting complement to Rabbi Meyer’s increasing involvement in issue advocacy and adult education, as well as Rabbi Weiner’s continued work with interfaith efforts, congregational development and serving as a public face of the Jewish community to the broader Seattle community and beyond. Rabbi Schulman eagerly anticipates working with the clergy team and the entire staff, greatly valuing the dual opportunity, “It is wonderful to have colleagues off of whom I can bounce ideas and from whom I can accept guidance, to know that I’m not alone in learning how to serve this community, but at the same time knowing I can take the baton and run with it.” We look forward to welcoming Rabbi Callie Schulman and her husband Matt into our community and into our hearts, and invite you to avail yourselves of the formal, incidental and ongoing opportunities to meet and get to know them better. She will, indeed, be a welcome and invaluable addition to our community. Temple’s Musical Team Welcomes New Leaders By Irene Amster, Marketing & Development Coordinator Temple’s congregation has a proud history of music, dating back to the music directorship of Samuel Goldfarb, composer of the internationally renowned song “I Have a Little Dreidl.” Today, Temple’s musical heart continues to beat strongly. Rabbi Callie Schulman, a talented singer and guitarist, brings a breadth of musical offerings to share with the congregation, among her many areas of expertise. Temple also welcomes award-winning Jewish composer, educator, and cantorial soloist Chava Mirel, whose musical talent and natural connection with young people, particularly high school students, make her an exciting new member of Temple’s musical team. “Chava and Callie’s addition to our staff helps us to build upon already existing innovative musical approaches and enables us to take them in some new and exciting directions,” stated Rabbi Weiner. “The congregation will continue to be engaged by evolving approaches to worship music which reflect a balance between tradition and innovation.” Youth Director Jacob Glickman will also be more centrally featured musically this year, especially in musical experiences for youth, Rabbi Weiner said. These leaders will be joining a remarkable musical team including Valerie Shields, Jacqueline Downey, Neil Weinstein, Robby Soble, and Ruthie Lipshulch, as well as the Rock Shabbat Ensemble, Adult Choir and Kesher Choir. We look forward to joining together in prayer and song at this year’s services and other community gatherings.

August/September/October 2017/5777-8 Vol. 110, No. 1 www.templedehirschsinai.org | 5 INTERFAITH SHABBAT SERVICE A House of Prayer for All People by Irene Amster, Marketing & Development Coordinator Over the summer, Temple hosted an interfaith Shabbat service followed by evening Muslim prayers and an Iftar, the meal eaten by Muslims after sunset during Ramadan. The event was a result of Temple’s ongoing relationship with the Seattle Chapter of the Pacifica Institute, Turkish Muslims who are followers of the Hizmet movement and have fled Turkey in the face of political persecution. “The Jewish community is no stranger to persecution, and, especially at a time when the Muslim-American community is under attack, we felt the need to strengthen this connection among our communities and demonstrate our solidarity by standing together,” said Rabbi Meyer. Temple member Jerilyn Anderson is friends with many in the Muslim community. She has attended interfaith gatherings and been in mosques before, “but to have witnessed evening prayers in our sanctuary was a sight that amazed and touched me,” Jerilyn said. Jerilyn recalls that one of the Pacifica guests said she was in a synagogue for the first time and never knew both faiths prayed to the same God. Another guest told her that we were “altering the course of history” with connections like this. “I think coming together and acknowledging our commonalities is how we will gain peace in the world—to know one another, to really know. It has to be personal,” Jerilyn added. Rabbi Meyer points out the words at the entrance to Temple’s sanctuary, from Isaiah 56:7: “My house shall be a house of prayer for all people.” Together we made these words come true. 30 | March/April 2017/5777 Vol. 109, No. 3 www.templedehirschsinai.org SACRED JOURNEYS Sacred Journeys Reaches Out: The First Yahrzeit by Laurie Warshal Cohen, Sacred Journeys After developing our outreach to bereaved members in our Temple family at the time of the loss of a loved one, we began to think about being there for our Temple members when the first yahrzeit approached. Most of our volunteers have had losses in their lives and knew what a vulnerable and difficult time a yahrzeit is. After a plan was developed by our group, Charlene Polyansky, one of our Sacred Journeys volunteers, took the lead in organizing our yahrzeit outreach. Our goal was to have a candle, note, and phone call to members before the first yahrzeit of their loved one--no matter where that loved one lived. So now, each member who approaches the yahrzeit of their family member receives a yahrzeit candle in the mail, Yahrzeit candle & card, ready for mailing to a Temple family. Photo by Laurie Cohen. with a note explaining the tradition of lighting that candle the night before the loved one’s actual death date. In addition to the candle and note, members also receive a call from one of the Sacred Journeys volunteers. "These calls are so meaningful to me," says Ann Singer, "because I know how I felt when my husband’s first yahrzeit came around. When I support someone else Kever Avot with my calls, I feel like I am passing on something life has taught me." Ann talked to a Temple member whose Honoring Our young husband had passed away. The Loved Ones widow and parents told Ann that the card, yahrzeit candle, and her call made them Sun • Sep 24 • 2:00 PM feel a part of our Temple family. 36 | August/September/October 2017/5777-8 Vol. 110, No. 1 www.templedehirschsinai.org ON OUR CALENDARS - HOLIDAYS & EVENTS Close to Home: Temple’s New Mural By Irene Amster, Marketing & Development Coordinator A new mural graces the wall in Temple's Seattle courtyard that was graffitied earlier this year. Painted by students from the Northwest School, the piece is titled “Close to Home,” and intends to reclaim and re- sanctify the space where Temple’s original sanctuary stood. As student artists Riley W. and Zoe T. explain in their proposal, the intention of the piece is to convey a message that, despite terrible actions of others against the Jewish community, this community will continue to persevere and spread its message of love and faith. The mural depicts trees reflecting life, growth, and change, with a sunrise behind the forest and rays of light peeking through symbolizing hope. At the base of the painting is barbed wire, representing the undeniable history of the Jewish Mural Artists Flora M., Mia H., Riley W., and Zoe T. in front of their piece titled Close to Home. Photo by Peter Woodburn. community and the world; however, life has emerged around it. A planter of wildflowers has been installed below. The mural is part of Temple’s rededication and re-consecration of the outdoor space. Rabbi Weiner reminds us, “It’s not just a courtyard. In some ways it’s a sacred space, as it’s where the original sanctuary stood. It is infused with holiness.” Rabbi Weiner also noted that having young people driving this project is crucial to the potency of the rededication. Curtis Erlinger, teacher of the Northwest School’s Public Art Class, reflected, “It was a way to guide a lot of conversations about how they can be agents of change and affect the world around them.” Please join us in celebrating the space’s renewed purpose at a special Outdoor Rock Shabbat and Rededication Ceremony on August 11.

FINAL SHABBAT IN THE PARK FEATURING SPEAKER MICHAEL NOVICK FRI • AUG 18 Temple is pleased to welcome special guest speaker Michael Novick, Executive Director of Strategic Development at the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, who will give a talk on "Saving Jewish Lives; Building Jewish Life."

What is Selichot? by Rabbi Aaron C. Meyer, Associate Rabbi During the daytime, we always seem to rush from one event to the next. From home to work, from work to home, from soccer games to the grocery store and back again. Life often distracts us from being the people we want to be. Jewish tradition has long recognized that disruptions in the cycle of time offer us the chance to recapture our highest values and to embrace our highest selves. While Shabbat is perhaps Jewish tradition’s best example of an island in time, each and every evening also offers just such a disruption. When the world slows down and we are left in the company of our thoughts, our emotions are amplified by the solitude. Each feeling is more intense, which is especially true as we contemplate our regrets and shortcomings. Selichot, the intense penitential prayers that are offered as part of our preparations for High Holy Days, are traditionally recited when the sun goes down. Join us on Saturday night, September 16th at 7:30 PM on Temple’s Bellevue campus as Rabbi Schulman, Neil Weinstein, Chava Mirel and I lead us in soulful, introspective prayers.
