LUDWIG VAN BKETHOVKN (Born at Bonn, December 16, 1770; died at Vienna, March 26, 1827.) This symphony—"Sinfonia pastorale" —was composed in the country round about Heiligenstadt in the summer of 1808. It was first per- formed at the Theater an der Wien, Vienna, December 22, 1808. The symphony was described on the programme as "A symphony entitled 'Recollections of Life in the Country,' in F major, No. 5" (sic). All the pieces performed were by Beethoven: an Aria, "Ah, perfido," sung by Josephine Kilitzky; Hymn with Latin text written in church style, with chorus and solos; Pianoforte Concerto in G major, played by Beethoven ; Grand Symphony in C minor, No. 6 (sic) ; Sanctus, with Latin text written in church style, with chorus and solos; Fantasie for pianoforte solo ; Fantasie for pianoforte, "into which the full orchestra enters little by little, and at the end the chorus joins in the Finale." The concert .began at half-past six. We know nothing about the pecuniary result. * The Pastoral was described on the programme of 1808 as follows: Pastoral Symphony [No. 5 (sic)], more expression of feeling than painting. First Piece. Pleasant feelings which awake in man on arriving in the country. Second Piece. Scene by the brook. Third Piece. Jovial assemblage of the country folk, in which appear suddenly Fourth Piece. Thunder and storm, in which enter Fifth Piece. Beneficial feelings, connected with thanks to the Godhead after the storm. The headings finally chosen are on the title-page of this programme book. The descriptive headings were probably an afterthought. In the sketch-book, which contains sketches for the first movement, is a note: "Characteristic Symphony. The audience seemed outraged at the idea of a loose woman and murder onstage at the Opéra-Comique. Bizet died three months later at age 37, never knowing that he had written what would become one of the most popular operas ever composed. After Bizet’s death, his publisher Choudens felt that the music of the opera was too good to lose, so he commissioned the French composer Ernest Guiraud to arrange excerpts from Carmen into two orchestral suites of six movements each. The music from Carmen has everything going for it – excitement, color and (best of all) instantly recognizable tunes. From today’s vantage point, it seems impossible that this opera could have been anything but a smash success from the first instant. The Suite No. 1 from Carmen contains some of the most famous music from the opera, and it also offers some wonderful writing for solo woodwinds.

L’année 2012 fut l’occasion de célébrer Debussy, sans oublier son contemporain Maurice Emmanuel. Ainsi le Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris, où Maurice Emmanuel enseigna l’Histoire de la musique de 1909 à 1936, a-t-il accueilli en décembre dernier un colloque consacré à « Maurice Emmanuel pédagogue ». Cette exposition s’en veut le prolongement. Elle été réalisée par les élèves de la classe de Culture musicale de Lucie Kayas dans le cadre des activités appliquées proposées par cette classe. Grâce à la générosité d’Anne Eichner-Emmanuel, petit-fille du compositeur, de nombreux documents originaux ont pu être présentés, tout comme les panneaux réalisés par l’Association des amis de Maurice Emmanuel. Using different historical approaches, this study examines contemporaneous musical society and the chamber wind ensemble genre to explore the context and setting for the genesis of the Société de musique de chambre pour instruments à vents, the Société moderne des instruments à vents, the Longy Club and the Barrère Ensemble of Wind Instruments. A summary of each ensemble leader’s life and description of the activities of the ensemble, selected repertoire and press reactions towards their performances provide essential insights on each ensemble. In demonstrating their shared origins, ideologies, and similarities in programming philosophies, this document reveals why these chamber wind ensembles created a musical movement, a golden age or age d’or of wind chamber music, affecting the local music scene and continuing to hold influence on today’s performers of wind music.     Paul Dukas: Villanelle for Horn and Orchestra (1906) Paul Dukas (1865-1935) was a French composer, critic, scholar and teacher. A studious man, of retiring personality, he was intensely self-critical, and as a perfectionist he abandoned and destroyed many of his compositions. His best known work is the orchestral piece The Sorcerer's Apprentice (L'apprenti sorcier), the fame of which became a matter of irritation to Dukas. In 2011, the Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians observed, "The popularity of L'apprenti sorcier and the exhilarating film version of it in Disney's Fantasia possibly hindered a fuller understanding of Dukas, as that single work is far better known than its composer." Among his other surviving works are the opera Ariane et Barbe-bleue (Ariadne and Bluebeard, 1897, later championed by Toscanini and Beecham), a symphony (1896), two substantial works for solo piano (Sonata, 1901, and Variations, 1902) and a sumptuous oriental ballet La Péri (1912). Described by the composer as a "poème dansé" it depicts a young Persian prince who travels to the ends of the Earth in a quest to find the lotus flower of immortality, coming across its guardian, the Péri (fairy). Because of the very quiet opening pages of the ballet score, the composer added a brief "Fanfare pour précéder La Peri" which gave the typically noisy audiences of the day time to settle in their seats before the work proper began. Today the prelude is a favorite among orchestral brass sections. At a time when French musicians were divided into conservative and progressive factions, Dukas adhered to neither but retained the admiration of both.

Bizet’s Final opera, Carmen, premiered in 1875 after delayed production due to fears that its themes of betrayal and murder would ofFend audiences. Sadly, Bizet died oF a heart attack only three months later, convinced that the work was a Failure, and unable to witness his own rise to stardom as the work entered the operatic canon as an all-time Favourite among audiences worldwide. After a career cut short by an early death, Bizet’s contribution to music, other than his composition of Carmen, was neglected for years.

The Concept of Kinaesthetic Listening Exemplified by Dance Compositions of the Meyerbeer Era Musical life in Paris underwent profound and diverse changes between the July Monar- chy and the Second Empire. One reason for this was the availability of printed scores for a broader public as an essential medium for the distribution of music before the advent of mechanical recordings. Additionally, the booming leisure industry encouraged music commercialization, with concert-bals and café-concerts, the precursors of the variétés, blurring the boundaries between dance and theatre performances. Therefore there was not just one homogeneous urban music culture, but rather a number of different music, and listening cultures, each within a specific urban setting. From this extensive field I will take a closer look at the music of popular dance or, more generally, movement cultures. This music spanned the breadth of cultural spaces, ranging from magnificent ballrooms – providing the recognition important to the upper-classes – to relatively modest dance cafés for those who enjoyed physical exercise above social distinction. Concert halls and musical salons provided a venue for private audiences who preferred themoresedateactivityoflisteningtostylized dance music rather than dancing.     Program Notes Program Notes byAprilL.Racana Georges Bizet (1838-1875) Opera "Carmen" (concert-style opera with Japanese supertitles) The opera Carmen was to be composer Georges Bizet’s final work in a life that was cut short at a very young age. It has become one of the world’s most well loved operas in spite of its rough start, where in Paris at the Opéra- Comique its premiere was postponed by a number of delays, and the first performances received much criticism from both the audiences and theatre 19 Feb critics of the time. 21 Following the Franco-Prussian War in 1870-1871, Bizet among other Feb French artists began anew, composing music for their compatriots. He was 23 commissioned to collaborate with Alphonse Daudet, on his play L’arlésienne Feb (The Girl from Arles). Using a small chamber orchestra Bizet created the incidental music for the play, and the two artists created a production both were satisfied with, even though it too was not received well by the public. In spite of this poor reception, Bizet (with the encouragement of a few local musicians, including Massenet), arranged four sections of the original music entitling it the First Suite from L’arlésienne, which was scored for a larger orchestra and performed in concert in November of 1872 with great success. It was at about this time that he began work on Carmen. Later a Second Suite from L’arlésienne was arranged in 1879, after Bizet’s death, by his friend and colleague Ernest Guiraud, who had also collaborated with the composer on Carmen.

    Carmen: a preface to the vocal score by Richard Langham Smith URTEXT IN CONTEXT Why a new edition of Carmen, an opera that has surely suffered the fate of its eponymous heroine: it has been done to death? In short, the present edition takes a different slant from other Urtexts primarily because it aims to capture the idea of the opera as a staged spectacle as well as that of a musical text: hence its designation as a ‘Performance Urtext’. Notwithstanding this dual purpose, its approach to the musical text remains founded on the ‘Urtextual’ principles largely established by German editions of the mid- and late-twentieth century, not least by the Urtext publications of Peters Edition, in this case its London operation which has provided the fundamental impetus for producing this new edition. Yet at the root of these German Urtexts is the notion of somehow carrying forward the ‘pure blue flame’ of composer-intention as set down in a final manuscript, or a submitted and proof-read score. Against this notion, however, a fundamental question must be asked: is Opera really like that? In the mounting of an operatic performance, many more people are involved than in the performance of a symphony: the scene- painters; the costume designers; the lighting crew and above all the director, metteur-en- scène or in the case of French opera, the all-important role of the régisseur. There was also the complex infrastructure behind, as it was then (and now): those responsible for the finances; for drumming up press attendance and audiences; producing the programmes and in France particularly, ensuring that the catering is up to scratch and that the restaurants around the venue are ready to serve the pre-performance entrée, the main course in the first interval, and the dessert in the second.
