BOROUGH COUNCIL OF WELLINGBOROUGH AGENDA ITEM 4 Development Committee 17 February 2020 Report of the Principal Planning Manager Local listing of the Roundhouse and proposed Article 4 Direction 1 Purpose of report For the committee to consider and approve the designation of the Roundhouse (or number 2 engine shed) as a locally listed building and for the committee to also approve an application for the addition of an Article 4(1) direction to the building in order to remove permitted development rights and prevent unauthorised demolition. 2 Executive summary 2.1 The Roundhouse is a railway locomotive engine shed built in 1872 by the Midland Railway. There is some concern locally that the building could be demolished and should be protected. It was not considered by English Heritage to be worthy of national listing but it is considered by the council to be worthy of local listing. 2.2 Local listing does not protect the building from demolition but is a material consideration in a planning application. 2.3 An article 4(1) direction would be required to be in place to remove the permitted development rights of the owner. John Cartledge Safety Policy Adviser Presentation to RIHSAC 15 October 2013 Why does platform edge risk matter to passengers? “At Clapham Junction the height gap between the platform and the trains on platform 15 is a health and safety issue. Towards the eastern end of the platform I have seen elderly people unable to disembark because the gap was unmanageable.” Joanna Moorhead Thursday 22 December 2011 Yes, I do mind the gap – you don't have to be drunk to fall under a train As public information campaigns go, this one seemed a cracker. Travelling while you're drunk is dangerous; and to make the point in the runup to Christmas, British Transport police have released CCTV images of a drunken passenger on a train as she staggers off it. Thankfully, the woman in the film is fine, because someone saw her fall and the train was delayed while she was hauled from under it. But seeing those images makes me furious, because despite what Network Rail might like us to believe, you don't have to be drunk to fall under a train. According to the staff at my local station, Clapham Junction in south-west London, it happens to entirely sober passengers on a regular basis, because of ever-bigger gaps between platforms and trains. I know this is true, because over the last three years my daughters, who travel to secondary school through Clapham Junction, have twice told me about incidents in which friends of theirs fell on to the tracks. -

Camden Railway Station a Reminder of Incessant Government Under-Funding of the Nsw Rail System
CAMDEN RAILWAY STATION A REMINDER OF INCESSANT GOVERNMENT UNDER-FUNDING OF THE NSW RAIL SYSTEM These notes relate only to the history of the passenger facilities at the Camden terminus. The history of the branch line has already been published. Alan Smith, a long-time member of the Australian Railway Historical Society and a frequent volunteer at its Resource Centre, won the competition to choose the cover photo for these notes. It seems strange that Alan chose a photograph not of the terminus but of an intermediate station, Kenny Hill. Why? Alan considered that this was the “iconic image of the challenges that existed in the day-to-day operation of the Camden line”. Specifically, the photograph shows the absence of priority given to passengers when the train crew had to decide whether to convey people or freight. It should be of no surprise that people lost out. Bob Merchant took this undated photograph on a day when the steam locomotive simply could not succeed in climbing the gradient. In the composition of the train were two milk pots. They were next to the engine. There was no question of reversing the train to Narellan, shunting and then proceeding with the only the passenger car. Why not? Because the milk pots had to be attached to No. 32 Express Goods or there would be serious trouble for the train crew if the Camden milk did not accompany the other milk vans from Bowral and Menangle on the train. What! Passengers are voters. Not so much in 1963 when the line closed. -

Railway Goods Sheds and Warehouses Introductions to Heritage Assets Summary Historic England’s Introductions to Heritage Assets (IHAs) are accessible, authoritative, illustrated summaries of what we know about specific types of archaeological site, building, landscape or marine asset. Typically they deal with subjects which lack such a summary. This can either be where the literature is dauntingly voluminous, or alternatively where little has been written. Most often it is the latter, and many IHAs bring understanding of site or building types which are neglected or little understood. Goods sheds and warehouses played a significant role in the economic life of England until the 1970s. This document gives an overview of the building type from its origins in the late 1820s until the final examples were constructed in the 1960s. It considers the function and development of goods sheds, discusses elements of their design, and gives some examples of how individual railway companies developed their own distinctive styles. This guidance note has been written by John Minnis and edited by Paul Stamper. In the foreground is is exceptional in retaining both its platform and a pair the indent in the platform for carts to back into and, of 30 hundredweight timber jib cranes. Built by the MR like many sheds, the interior is whitewashed to give in 1857, it gives a good indication of the appearance more light. -

The goal of the research is to investigate the application of this new type of glued insulated rail joint where the fishplates are manufactured at high pressure, regulated temperature, glass-fiber reinforced polymer composite plastic material. The usage of this kind of glued insulated rail joints is able to eliminate the electric fishplate circuit and early fatigue deflection and it can ensure the isolation of rails’ ends from each other by aspect of electric conductivity. Wingler June 2019 1 From the 1902 Mono-Rail guided Bullock Cart in India to the 21th Century Mono-Rail guided Los Angeles Airport Automatic People Mover (LAX APM) in USA I. Mono-Rail guided Carriage Transport in India from 1902 to 1927 The first Mono-Rail guided goods carriage system, a road borne railway system, had been the Kundala Valley Railway in India, which was built in 1902 and operated between Munnar and Top Station in the Kannan Devan Hills of Kerala. It operated with a cart- vehicle, built to transport tea and other goods. The initial cart road was cut in 1902 and then replaced by the monorail goods carriage system along the road leading from Munnar to Top Station for the purpose of transporting tea and other products from Munnar and Madupatty to Top Station. This monorail was based on the Ewing System (see below) and had small steel-wheels placed on the mono-rail track while a larger wheel rested on the road to balance the monorail. The mono-rail was pulled by bullocks. Top Station was a trans-shipment point for delivery of tea from Munnar to Bodinayakkanur. Tea chests arriving at Top Station were then transported by an aerial ropeway from Top Station 5 km (3 mi) down-hill to the south to Kottagudi, Tamil Nadu, which popularly became known as "Bottom Station". -
