  • Blessed Among Us Sr. Dorothy Stang Martyr of the Amazon (1931–2005)
132 February 12 Blessed Among Us Sr. Dorothy Stang Martyr of the Amazon (1931–2005) On the morning of February 12, 2005, Sr. Dorothy Stang, an American-born nun who had spent forty years in Brazil, set off for a meeting of landless farmers. Along the muddy trail her way was blocked by two hired gunmen who asked whether she carried any weapon. In reply she produced her Bible and began to read the Beatitudes: “Blessed are the poor in spirit . Blessed are the peacemakers.” And then they shot her. Sr. Dorothy, born in Dayton, Ohio, joined the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur out of high school and volunteered in 1966 to work in Brazil. Eventually she was drawn to the remote regions of the Amazon and the cause of poor farmers who were exploited and robbed by rich loggers and cattle barons. She had come to see the connections between defend- ing the rights of the poor and protecting the ecological balance of the rain forest itself. Well into her seventies, she trudged through mud and thick forests to attend prayer services and labor meetings. Her efforts on behalf of the farmers and the imperiled rain forest marked her as an enemy by those who hired her assassins. Her death aroused the government of Brazil and the whole world to the cause of ecology and justice for which she offered her life. “I light a candle and look at Jesus on the cross and ask for the strength to carry the suffering of the people. Don’t worry about my safety.

  • Landscapes of Korean and Korean American Biblical Interpretation
BIBLICAL INTERPRETATION AMERICAN AND KOREAN LANDSCAPES OF KOREAN International Voices in Biblical Studies In this first of its kind collection of Korean and Korean American Landscapes of Korean biblical interpretation, essays by established and emerging scholars reflect a range of historical, textual, feminist, sociological, theological, and postcolonial readings. Contributors draw upon ancient contexts and Korean American and even recent events in South Korea to shed light on familiar passages such as King Manasseh read through the Sewol Ferry Tragedy, David and Bathsheba’s narrative as the backdrop to the prohibition against Biblical Interpretation adultery, rereading the virtuous women in Proverbs 31:10–31 through a Korean woman’s experience, visualizing the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and demarcations in Galatians, and introducing the extrabiblical story of Eve and Norea, her daughter, through story (re)telling. This volume of essays introduces Korean and Korean American biblical interpretation to scholars and students interested in both traditional and contemporary contextual interpretations. Theme for World Mission Sunday 2021 “We cannot keep from speaking about what we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:20) 1 Meditations on the Biblical Readings of the Holy Mass of the Missionary Month October 2021 (prepared by the community of Trappist nuns of Vitorchiano - Italy at the request of the Pontifical Missionary Union) 2 © copyright Missio Austria/Clemens Fuchs For further information on the figure of Venerable Pauline Jaricot: http://paulinejaricot.opm-france.org/ MASSON Catherine, Pauline Jaricot, 1799-1862 Biographie, Les Éditions du Cerf, Paris, 2019 3 FOREWARD After the positive experience of the Extraordinary Missionary Month October 2019 (EMM OCT2019) with the theme "Baptized and Sent: The Church of Christ on mission in the world", some national directorates of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) have suggested that each year the International Secretariat of the Pontifical Missionary Union (PMU) should develop an instrument for prayer and missionary formation through commentaries and meditations on the biblical readings proposed in the daily Celebration of the Liturgy of the Eucharist during the Missionary Month of October. These reflections for the Missionary Month October 2021, only available digitally in English, Italian, Spanish, French and Portuguese, represent a first attempt to respond to these suggestions. I would also like to thank all the national directorates who collaborated on the various translations. It is above all a working tool, not an exhaustive text or established theological spiritual reflections. The reference is the Word of God proclaimed in the Liturgy and prayed in the personal and community meditation. Given to the diverse English liturgical books used in English speaking countries, the native English-speaking translator referred to the daily readings offered by the Lectionary for the Sundays in Ordinary Time of Year B and by the Lectionary for weekdays of the odd-numbered years for the month of October of the year 2021, approved by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

  • Biography of Pope John Paul Ii Pdf
Biography of pope john paul ii pdf Continue John Paul II (1920-2005) CAROL JASEF VODYA, elected Pope on October 16, 1978, was born on May 18, 1920, in Wadowice, Poland. He was the third of three children born to Karol Oytytya and Emilia Kakovsky, who died in 1929. His older brother Edmund, a doctor, died in 1932, and his father, Carol, a non-commissioned officer in the army, died in 1941. He was nine years old when he received his First Communion and eighteen years when he received the Sacrament of Confirmation. After graduating from high school in Vadowice, he enrolled at the University of Jagelon in Krakow in 1938. When the Nazi occupying forces closed the university in 1939, Karol worked (1940-1944) in a quarry and then at the Solvea chemical plant to earn a living and avoid deportation to Germany. Feeling called to the priesthood, he began his studies in 1942 at a secret large seminary in Krakow under the direction of Archbishop Adam Stefan Sapiehi. At the time, he was one of the organizers of the Rhapsodic Theatre, which was also underground. After the war, Carol continued his studies at the main seminary, recently reopened, and at the School of Theology at Jagelon University, before his priestly ordination in Krakow on November 1, 1946. Father Oytysha was then sent by Cardinal Sapieha to Rome, where he received his doctorate in theology (1948). He wrote his thesis on faith, as is understood in the works of St. John the Cross. As a student in Rome, he spent his holidays performing pastoral service with Polish expats in France, Belgium and Holland.
