Named as the ‘2013 Oustanding Teen of the Year’, Latonia plays a variety of sports, with hockey being her favourite, as well as softball, volleyball, soccer, netball and basketball. She also enjoys playing golf as a leisure activity and is a big fan of cricket. She was also an active member of Student Government who enjoyed representing the stu- dent body. Latonia has actively participated in a number of KBB clean-ups, both marine and land based and assisted at her school in the BSmart pro- gramme. BFIS OVERSEAS SCHOLARSHIP AARON PHILLIPS Freshman| Business | Manchester Metropolitan Uni., UK Aaron has now graduated from Warwick Academy, gaining a number of GCSEs and IB diploma. He will attend Manchester Met. in the Fall and looks forward to the next phase of his education. He enjoys music, playing mainly piano and French horn, but he has also played violin, cello, bass guitar and cornet! He also enjoys singing, both in choirs and as a soloist, and photography. Aaron is very active in the community and enjoys giving back through volunteering at a rest home, assisting with care and feeding of resi- dents, and also entertaining them with his singing and piano playing. He was a tutor in the Math Attack programme, learning patience and perseverance and has also helped at the Kathmandu Kids Christmas Fair to help raise funds for the charity. BFIS OVERSEAS SCHOLARSHIP AWARD DENZEL SIMONS Junior | Economics | Florida International University, FL Denzel attended Saltus Grammar School, graduating in 2011 before going on to University. He is a floor ambassador at FIU, representing residents of his house, an officer and member of the Caribbean Student Union and a mem- ber of the Black Student Union. He is a member of the Tau Delta Chapter of a Fraternity, enjoying creating a sense of community togetherness. He has also done math tutoring for children ages 7 - 11. Denzel gained his Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award. He was a Scout with the Bermuda 18th Scout troop for a number of years, repre- senting his troop and Bermuda at the 21st World Scout Jubilee in the UK. BFIS OVERSEAS SCHOLARSHIP AWARD CHELSEA SMITH Freshman | Business | Western Ontario University, Canada Chelsea has attended Bermuda High School where she gained impressive IB scores and many IGCSEs in a variety of subjects. She pursues a number of interests including playing hockey and working out at the gym. She is also a member of the school's drama club. Chelsea has been a candy-striper at KEMH for a number of years. She has also assisted with a number of programmes run through her school, including an autism daycare programme, PTA dances and fairs. She assisted with the National Trust clean-up of the Royal Naval Graveyard in Dockyard and has gained her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. BFIS OVERSEAS SCHOLARSHIP AWARD YUKI SUN Freshman | Actuarial Science | CASS Business School, UK Yuki has just graduated from Saltus Grammar School, attaining some excellent AP and IGCSE results. She enjoys a number of activities, including writing and interviewing (for Youth News) and also doing securities trading with the Saltus 'Rogue Traders' team in the KMPG investment competition. She is a member of her school's Green Team, organizing trash-free lunches and trash audits. She also loves singing and writing music, and lists drawing and watercolour painting as another skill. Yuki quite rightly counts both her Green Team and Youth News work as community services. BFIS OVERSEAS SCHOLARSHIP AWARD TRAVIS TROTT Senior | Accounting | University of Western England, UK Travis attended Warwick Academy before attending Rider Academy in 2009. He transferred to UWE in 2010. Travis enjoys football, helping to coach the BAA Under 11 team, play- ing for their first division team and also refereeing in the youth foot- ball league. While in the UK, he plays for a church league in Bristol. Travis has been involved in the community for a number of years, participating in the End-to-End and PALS walks to raise money for charity. He has also taught at Vacation Bible School and volunteered at the Centre Against Abuse and Windreach. BFIS OVERSEAS SCHOLARSHIP AWARD DOMINICK WRIGHT Freshman | Accounting | University of Pennsylvania, PA Dominick attended Warwick Academy until 2009 when he trans- ferred to The Hotchkiss School. At Hotchkiss he enjoy playing Varsity soccer and was a member of the Gay Straight Alliance Club as well as the Pies Descalzos Club which maintains a relationship with the Foundation in Colombia providing assistance to impoverished chil- dren. Dominick enjoyed working at BAMZ during his summers, working mainly in the aquarium cleaning the tanks, preparing the food, feed- ing the fish, etc. He travelled to Colombia with other Hotchkiss School students in 2011 to work at a Pies Descalzos Foundation school, assisting the teachers and playing with the children. The trip also helped him improve his Spanish. Once back at school, he helped to set up the Pies Descalzos Club. BFIS AIG SCHOLARSHIP IMAN SMITH Freshman | Business | University of Coventry, UK Iman attended Saltus Grammar School and is looking forward to entering UWE in the UK in the Fall. She enjoys playing hockey and has represented Bermuda on several occasions for the Under 17s, the Under 21s and the national women's hockey team. She also plays netball for the Pink Panthers. Iman served as Prom Committee leader and organized a number of fund-raising events. She has also been active with community serv- ice, working as a volunteer at King Edward Hospital and a student counselor for Youth Net. She has also been involved with Live Free and KBB. BFIS SCHOLARSHIP AWARD & AIG AWARD MARIEKO PAUL Senior | Finance | St. John’s University, NY Marieko attended Berkeley Institute and then went on to Bermuda College to earn his Associates Degree before transferring to St. John's to further his education. He enjoys bowling and was a member of the Bermuda Junior Bowling Association, playing at Warwick Bowl. He also enjoys basketball, playing with BYSP, Indian Summer League, Bermuda College and Jackson's Drills & Skills programme. Marieko is a hard worker but still found time for community service, volunteering at several Seniors rest homes. He also coached with the Bermuda Junior Bowling Association. BFIS AMLIN SCHOLARSHIP MATTHEW HOGAN Junior | Economics | Durham University, UK Matthew attended Saltus Grammar School for several years before transferring to Malvern College in the UK. He currently attends Durham University. He enjoys a number of extra-curricular interests. He is musically tal- ented, playing a number of instruments (violin, piano and trombone). He enjoys the dramatic arts and participates in various sports includ- ing rowing, basketball, squash, golf and badminton. He is also active in the community, having worked with various char- itable groups (Young Enterprise, Dollars for Hours, etc.) while in school and this year travelling to Romania to renovate children's homes. Matthew has earned his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. BFIS AXIS CAPITAL SCHOLARSHIP JAMES GREGORY Junior | Finance | Babson College, MA James attended Fessenden School in 2005, transferring to Phillips Exeter Academy in 2008. On graduating he entered Babson in 2011. He enjoys / plays …. James volunteered with Meals On Wheels twice a week while at Phillips Exeter, which involved serving food and visiting with seniors at a nursing home. The sessions facilitated a direct exchange with other PAC Chairs, Members, and Clerks on a range of technical issues, such as mechanisms for monitoring the implementation of recommendations and the use of media and technology in reaching out to the public. Members and Clerks of the Welsh and Bermudian PACs identified common challenges faced by parliaments and committees in small legislatures, and shared their approaches to managing, for example, parliamentarians’ limited time and resources. The eight delegates remained highly engaged in all discussions with their counterparts in Westminster and Cardiff, including the UK PAC Vice Chair Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown MP, and Welsh PAC Chair Nick Ramsay AM. Following the conclusion of the programme, delegates suggested specific changes they would undertake upon their return to Bermuda.
