  • 1953 Hudson Cars Described
1953 HUDSON CARS DESCRIBED 1953 HUDSON - GENERAL: A downsized Hudson arrived this year, called the Hudson Jet. It had styling that would be mimicked by the rest of the line in 1954. Gone was the Pacemaker. with its nameplate replaced by a new, lower level Wasp. The upper level Wasp, called the "Super Wasp," and it moved into the former Commodore 6 slot that now disappeared. The Hornet finally supplanted the Commodore 8 completely. The nameplate was retired, putting the 8-cylinder powerplant out to pasture. That L-head I-8, having served twenty long years from 1932 until 1952, was gone. The consolidation of lines and the removal of the Commodore Six and Eight allowed for less tooling in the Wasp-Hornet lines and should have saved money. The problem was that production kept dropping even though the cars were considered popular. The issue at hand was dated styling and the lack of an OHV V-8. At the root of the lower production was Hudson's lack of investment dollars when that trend to V8s and more modern styling was pulling the Big Three away from all other competition. Worse, a good deal the sales problems were the result of Hudson misreading their audience and thinking that these changes weren't needed. Even with the introduction of the Jet, production dropped. And Hudson's racing victories, that outshone all rivals, while earning respect for the brand, did not entice buyers into the showrooms. INNOVATIONS: The Hudson Jet, a smaller, more economical model, was introduced. It was an attempt to drop into the lower price market to pick up sales.

engine available in the lighter "88" chassis as well), and the '51 Hudson Hornet (created by making full use of the nearly-new six engine's potential for enlargement, and then adding one more essential feature: a chassis design whose proven roadability was entirely a match for all of the tale of the extra power). Both of these cars were naturals for the then- new sport of late-model stock car racing though they were not designed as racers. Next after them came the 300 letter-series hemi-head vanishing Chrysler V-8—a fine engineering achievement airily dismissed by Consumers' Union magazine at the time as an "automotive Tyrannosaurus." Like the Olds and the muscle Hudson, it was an unmistakable "muscle" vehicle despite being built on a full-size passenger-car chassis (few other sizes were available then). It, too, won racing laurels. By that time there was no longer any question about the car performance-car trend, and sullen grumbles about "the horsepower race" began to be heard from the same breed of critics who today find their chief satisfaction in trying This is the story of what appears to be one more righteously to outlaw anyone who dares to own a faster or endangered automotive species. shinier toy than they do themselves. "Musclecar"—like "sports car" before it—is one of those Prewar vehicles of the "musclecar" type are much harder useful terms which everyone understands although it was to list. Special high-performance models had of course not invented until long after many such cars had already been built from the earliest years, and most of them are been built.

the Hudson rEflecTor Newsletter of the Southern California Chapter of the H-E-T Club Serving Hudson Fans Since 1966 February 2008 SCC goes to the Will Rogers State Park The Southern California Chapter will gather at the Will Rogers State Historical Park on Saturday Feb 23. 1501 Will Rogers State Park Road (at Sunset Boulevard), Pacific Palisades, CA. /(310) 454-8212. After driving up a rather steep little side road, you park your car near the Visitor's Center, where you can tour a small museum with exhibits about the cowboy-comic (containing busts, photos, a scale model of his home, etc.). You may also watch a short film here about his life & times. A free "audio wand" will help lead you on a self-guided tour of the large estate, with "listening posts" located throughout the estate. On the south side of the parking lot is the broad green lawn of a regulation-size Polo Field. Will Rogers was an avid polo buff, and the field is still used today on Saturdays for colorful polo matches. Meet at noon in parking area; bring your picnic lunch / share if you want; we'll eat & socialize til 2:00 when we join up with others for a docent-led tour of the grounds and house. Please note the $7.00 per car entry fee, so grab your chapter buddies and see how many people you really can fit in a Hudson. This site is targeted for shutdown by our governator, so we want to enjoy this place before it gets padlocked.

Luckily I have been able to draw upon many interested and willing librarians and archivists while conducting research for this project. I would like to thank Rebecca Lynch, Roger White, Maggie Dennis, Joyce Bedi, at the Smithsonian Institution. Buz McKim at the ISC archives, Betty Carlan at the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, the Staff of the National Automotive History Collection at the Detroit Public Library, and Bonnie Walworth at the Ford Motor Company archives in Dearborn, Michigan. I would also like to thank the Lemelson Center, the Atlanta History Center, the Riddle Foundation and the School of History, Technology and Society at Georgia Tech whose generosity permitted me to work in such a variety of collections. Studying the history of technology often requires technical expertise beyond that available in the classroom. During my experience as a racing mechanic and fabricator I was fortunate to have many very capable teachers who willingly shared their expertise. Among these are my Robert Wagner, Smokey Yunick, Chris Brown, Amos Johnson, Thomas Blam and Franz Blam.

After the busy holidays, I always seem to build-up a stack of car magazines and parts catalogs – now is an opportune time to re-read old WTN’s or look through that four month old Hemmings Motor News for the unique vehicle or part you missed the first time (and if it’s still available – chances are you’ll get a better deal on it now!). Speaking of deals, winter can also be a good chance to add a few dollars to your hobby slush fund by taking inventory of those Hudson spare parts you’ve been squirreling away. If you have no immediate use for the spares – consider advertising them in the WTN, the NEC newsletter you are holding in your hands or, listing them on an online auction like eBay. Getting those spare parts into a fellow enthusiast’s hands could be just what’s needed to get another Hudson on the road – and after all, that’s what our organization is about.
