Dear Friends, in Keeping with the Nostalgic Themes with Which We
Dear friends, In keeping with the nostalgic themes with which we normally open these Activity Pages, I thought I’d tell you a story about young love – its excitement, its promise, and its almost inevitable woes. It’s a true story, one from my own past. And it begins at Roller City, a roller skating rink located, in those distant days, on Alameda Avenue just west of Federal Boulevard in Denver, Colorado. It was a balmy Friday night when I first spied my Cinderella – a lovely, lithe thing with a cute smile, pink ribbons in her blonde hair, and very “girly” bons bons of matching color hanging on the front of her white roller skates. It might have been love at first sight but certainly by the time we skated hand in hand under the multi-colored lights in a romantic “couples skate,” I was a goner. Indeed, I fell more madly in love than I had at any other time in my whole life. I was 10 years old. I drop in that fact because it proved to be the relevant point in the impending tragedy of unrequited love. For you see, it turned out there was an unbridgeable gap in our ages. I was just getting ready to go into the 4th grade whereas I learned she was going into the 5th grade! Yipes! I had fallen for an older woman! How could I break it to her? And how would I deal with the rejection I knew must follow? I was in a terrible jam and so…and I’m not proud of it…I made up a lie. -

RADIO ROCKWAY Odalys Cordero Preface It is with great pleasure that I share a Johnny Mercer inspired unit entitled: “Radio Rockway.” This unit utilizes interdisciplinary instruction within a musical setting. The target student audience throughout the curriculum is the 5th grade student population but can easily be adapted to middle and high school level students. The unit is typically completed in approximately nine weeks if music class is taught one hour a week. This unit is designed to educate students on the history and elements of Latin Jazz while simultaneously establishing a creative environment for student to create their own lyrics. On a personal note, I enjoyed witnessing the musical growth in each 5th grade class as they used the framework of pre-existing Latin Jazz songs and lyrically “made it their own,” so to speak. This was a great opportunity for Spanish speakers at an ESOL Level of 1 & 2 level to express themselves more freely throughout the progression of the unit. This unit will be based on experiencing and creating lyrics to this particular genre. Each class will take on the role of a radio station with the assigned genre. Through these radio stations, students will perform their composition lyrics. -

“To Be an American”: How Irving Berlin Assimilated Jewishness and Blackness in his Early Songs A document submitted to The Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS in the Performance Studies Division of the College-Conservatory of Music 2011 by Kimberly Gelbwasser B.M., Northwestern University, 2004 M.M., University of Cincinnati, 2006 Committee Chair: Steven Cahn, Ph.D. Abstract During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, millions of immigrants from Central and Eastern Europe as well as the Mediterranean countries arrived in the United States. New York City, in particular, became a hub where various nationalities coexisted and intermingled. Adding to the immigrant population were massive waves of former slaves migrating from the South. In this radically multicultural environment, Irving Berlin, a Jewish- Russian immigrant, became a songwriter. The cultural interaction that had the most profound effect upon Berlin’s early songwriting from 1907 to 1914 was that between his own Jewish population and the African-American population in New York City. In his early songs, Berlin highlights both Jewish and African- American stereotypical identities. Examining stereotypical ethnic markers in Berlin’s early songs reveals how he first revised and then traded his old Jewish identity for a new American identity as the “King of Ragtime.” This document presents two case studies that explore how Berlin not only incorporated stereotypical musical and textual markers of “blackness” within two of his individual Jewish novelty songs, but also converted them later to genres termed “coon” and “ragtime,” which were associated with African Americans. -

Inventory of American Sheet Music (1844-1949)
University of Dubuque / Charles C. Myers Library INVENTORY OF AMERICAN SHEET MUSIC (1844 – 1949) May 17, 2004 Introduction The Charles C. Myers Library at the University of Dubuque has a collection of 573 pieces of American sheet music (of which 17 are incomplete) housed in Special Collections and stored in acid free folders and boxes. The collection is organized in three categories: African American Music, Military Songs, and Popular Songs. There is also a bound volume of sheet music and a set of The Etude Music Magazine (32 items from 1932-1945). The African American music, consisting of 28 pieces, includes a number of selections from black minstrel shows such as “Richards and Pringle’s Famous Georgia Minstrels Songster and Musical Album” and “Lovin’ Sam (The Sheik of Alabami)”. There are also pieces of Dixieland and plantation music including “The Cotton Field Dance” and “Massa’s in the Cold Ground”. There are a few pieces of Jazz music and one Negro lullaby. The group of Military Songs contains 148 pieces of music, particularly songs from World War I and World War II. Different branches of the military are represented with such pieces as “The Army Air Corps”, “Bell Bottom Trousers”, and “G. I. Jive”. A few of the delightful titles in the Military Songs group include, “Belgium Dry Your Tears”, “Don’t Forget the Salvation Army (My Doughnut Girl)”, “General Pershing Will Cross the Rhine (Just Like Washington Crossed the Delaware)”, and “Hello Central! Give Me No Man’s Land”. There are also well known titles including “I’ll Be Home For Christmas (If Only In my Dreams)”. -

This thesis paper, as well as·the accompanying recital, delves into the topic of The Great American Songbook Through the Lens of Judy Garland. The Great American Songbook is a collection of American standard repertoire from the late nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth. Judy Garland in particular is an exemplary performer of this period; her life parallels the troubles and careers of many other performers in this era. By exploring and performing songs that Garland performed during her career, this paper relates the history of American music to the life of the acclaimed Judy Garland. Johnson (212) 875-5718; [email protected] A BROADWAY ROMANCE One-Night-Only Valentine’s Day Concert Featuring Vocalists Laura Osnes and Santino Fontana Conducted by Ted Sperling February 14, 2015 Ted Sperling will conduct the New York Philharmonic and vocalists Laura Osnes and Santino Fontana in A Broadway Romance, a one-night-only Valentine’s Day concert, Saturday, February 14, 2015, at 8:00 p.m. The program will feature songs from popular musicals ranging from Bernstein’s West Side Story and Gershwin’s Girl Crazy to Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel and Stephen Sondheim’s Company, woven together to tell a unified narrative of a romance from beginning to end, from meeting to first date to falling in love to marriage. Ted Sperling led the Philharmonic in a similar program, Broadway Night with the Philharmonic, during its July 2013 Bravo! Vail residency, with vocalists Betsey Wolfe and Andrew Samonsky. During the following summer’s residency, Mr. Sperling led the Philharmonic with Laura Osnes and Santino Fontana — who starred together on Broadway in Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella — as well as Christine Ebersole in Broadway Night with the Philharmonic: The Music of Frank Loesser. Ted Sperling most recently appeared with the Philharmonic conducting and directing its semi-staged production of Kern & Hammerstein’s Show Boat, in November 2014. "EGO, SCRIPTOR CANTILENAE": THE CANTOS AND EZRA POUND An Abstract of a Thesis Submitted in Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Philosophy Steven R. Gulick University of Northern Iowa August 1991 ABSTRACT Can poetry "make new" the world? Ezra Pound thought so. In "Cantico del Sole" he said: "The thought of what America would be like/ If the Classics had a wide circulation/ Troubles me in my sleep" (Personae 183). He came to write an 815 page poem called The Cantos in which he presents "fragments" drawn from the literature and documents of the past in an attempt to build a new world, "a paradiso terreste" (The Cantos 802). This may be seen as either a noble gesture or sheer egotism. Pound once called The Cantos the "tale of the tribe" (Guide to Kulchur 194), and I believe this is so, particularly if one associates this statement with Allen Ginsberg's concerning The Cantos as a model of a mind, "like all our minds" (Ginsberg 14-16).
