Volume 15, Issue 1, 129-144, 2021 “I Cannot Hide My Anger to Spare You Guilt”: On BLMTO and Canadian Mainstream Media’s Response VALENTINA CAPURRI Ryerson University, Canada ABSTRACT In this paper, I examine Canadian mainstream media’s response to Black Lives Matter Toronto, focusing in particular on two events that occurred in the city in the Summer of 2016 and Winter of 2017. By relying on Critical Race Theory, I argue that a White-dominated press has been unwilling to engage with the message presented by Black activists under the excuse that the tone of the message is overly harsh and threatening to White audiences. After analysing the historical roots of such a claim, I conclude that, in the current climate, there is no space for any dialogue in what remains an oppressor-oppressed relationship across the country, including in Toronto, Canada’s most multicultural city. KEYWORDS racism; white supremacy; critical race theory; Canada The quote in the title is from a keynote presentation delivered by Audre Lorde at the National Women’s Studies Association Conference in Storrs, Connecticut, in June 1981 (Lorde, 2007). In the presentation, Lorde examines how anger is one of Black women’s responses to racism despite the inability and unwillingness of White women, including many female-identified academics attending the conference, to bear witness to that anger. Lorde was pinpointing White women’s refusal to listen under the cover that the tone used to convey the message was excessively harsh and was therefore perceived as threatening. Thirty-nine years later, Black individuals, and Black women in particular, are still faced with similar challenges and with White society’s unwillingness to listen to the message conveyed by their anger, and the excuse is the same: the tone is too loud and intimidating.

NEWSLETTER - VOLUME XVIII - No. I – September 2016 Being part of a community By Mona Greenbaum, director of the LGBT Family Coalition As director of the LGBT Family Coalition, once again at this time of year, I find myself sitting in front of a blank page, with 3 goals in mind: 1) I have to convince you to renew your membership to the LGBT Family Coalition or to become a member for the first time, by letting you know what a great organization the Coalition is. 2) I have to motivate you to pay your membership and hopefully give us a donation to help continue to promote the legal and social recognition of our families. 3) I’m hoping to inspire you to volunteer your skills to help work on important causes that affect our families. Here’s my usual approach: For our older members, I remind you of the battles we’ve already won: obtaining the right to have both parents in our families legally recognized; securing access to fertility clinics and adoption; winning the right to marry; increasing the visibility of our families in schools and other public institutions; etc. The Coalition was at the forefront of all these advances! For newer members, I speak about how the Coalition is pushing for change: having surrogacy legally recognized in Quebec; giving children with trans parents proper birth certificates that reflect who their parents are; gaining back RAMQ coverage of fertility treatments (including preservation of fertility for people who are transitioning); minimizing wait times before DPJ adoptions are finalized; continuing the fight against homophobia and transphobia in schools and social services; and most of all, making sure that the realities of our families are represented in our children’s everyday environment, not as something to be tolerated, but rather as a richness and an asset to the school and to the community.

Canadian Television by Jennifer Burwell Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2002, glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com The portrayal of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, and queer people in English Canadian television programming has been sporadic. There have been several significant appearances of glbtq characters on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Canada's national public broadcasting system. The recent advent of PrideVision, a digital cable television network with a mandate to air glbtq Canadian content, will certainly lead to an increase not only in the presence of gays and lesbians on television, but also in the number of shows developed for a glbtq audience. Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Perhaps because it is a public broadcaster with a mandate to inform and enlighten as well as entertain, CBC has aired more television programs with glbtq content than Canada's other national network, CTV. CBC's Degrassi Jr. High (1987-1989), part of the youth-centered Degrassi series, dealt with abortion, single parenthood, sex, death, racism, AIDS, feminism, and gay issues as situations that the characters had to work through within the serialized narrative structures, while avoiding the "topic of the week" feel that is endemic to the genre. One episode, for example, featured the pre-adolescent character Caitlin discussing lesbianism with her English teacher, Miss Avery. A spin-off of the Degrassi series, Liberty Street (CBC, 1995-1996), featured Billy Merasty as Nathan Jones, a gay native ex-bicycle courier. The producers of Liberty Street went on to create Riverdale (CBC, 1997-2000), with gay character George Patillo. In early 2003, CBC announced that gay playwright Michel Tremblay will write Quebec's first television show to feature an on-going gay relationship, Le Coeur Découvert.
