The literary works of three French author-aviators from World War II – Antoine de Saint- Exupéry, Jules Roy, and Romain Gary – reveal an image of the aviator and the writer that operates in a zone between reality and imagination. The purpose of this study is to delineate the elements that make up what I propose is a more complex and even ambivalent image of both individual and nation. Through these three works – Pilote de guerre (Flight to Arras), La Vallée heureuse (The Happy Valley), and La Promesse de l’aube (Promise at Dawn) – this dissertation proposes to uncover not only the figures of individual narratives, but also the figures of “a certain idea of France” during a critical period of that country’s history.

    1 Communiqué de presse 5 septembre 2019 LE CHANT DES PARTISANS, CRÉATION ET DIFFUSION Exposition-dossier Du 7 octobre 2019 au 5 janvier 2020 MUSÉE DE L’ORDRE DE LA LIBÉRATION Hôtel national des Invalides Le musée de l’Ordre de la Libération présente une exposition-dossier inédite dédiée à la création et à la diffusion du Chant des partisans. Dans une des salles d’exposition temporaire, deux pièces phares, la guitare d’Anna Marly et le manuscrit original de l’oeuvre, plongent le visiteur dans l’histoire de ce chant mythique devenu œuvre populaire au fil des décennies. Le Chant des partisans : l’hymne de la Résistance Le Chant des partisans est le plus célèbre des chants de la Résistance française, interprété aujourd’hui lors des cérémonies officielles. Si son succès n’a jamais faibli, l’histoire de sa création dans les cercles Français libres de Londres et celle de sa diffusion, ou encore les engagements de son interprète sont en revanche beaucoup moins connus. L’exposition retrace les différentes étapes de la création de ce chant et en présente les différents acteurs :Français libres, résistants, Compagnons de la Libération... Une place particulière est réservée à Anna Marly, qui en est la compositrice, auteure de la version d’origine en russe puis l’interprète. En mai 1943 à Londres, le Français libre André Gillois cherche un indicatif pour l’émission de radio de la BBC « Honneur et Patrie » à destination de la Résistance intérieure. La mélodie composée par Anna Marly est alors retenue. Le 30 mai 1943, Joseph Kessel et Maurice Druon écrivent les paroles en français, pour ensuite enregistrer une première version.
