La Vie en Rose Talent: Marion Cotillard, Gerard Depardieu, Emmanuelle Seigner, Jean-Pierre Martins, Manon Chevallier, Pascal Greggory Date of Review: Friday, 13 July 2007 Director/Producer/Editor: Olivier Dahan Duration: 140 minutes Classification: M We rate it: Four and a half stars. Given that it’s Harry Potter time again (the fifth film in the series has rolled out this week) it’s also that part of the cinematic year during which any number of smaller, quieter, even – dare one say it – potentially more interesting films can come and go almost undetected in the wake of the box-office juggernauts. Not that there’s anything wrong with young Harry; it’s just that enormous franchises like his can so easily obscure worthy smaller films that dare to open at around the same time. La Vie en Rose is precisely such an offering: a carefully made and beautifully performed bio-pic of legendary French songstress Edith Piaf. The film has been a big deal in its native country, and rightly so; here though it’s a minor art-house release, and in my opinion it’s absolutely worthy of discussion. Piaf of course remains a cherished icon for the French. Rising as she did from a truly awful childhood (which comprised numerous abandonments at the hands of her deeply flawed parents, erstwhile adoptions by brothel-workers, and serious illnesses that would have profound effects on her in later life) Piaf was discovered by a middle- level nightclub owner and given the opportunity to air her extraordinary voice, the voice that would help its owner transcend her difficult circumstances and somehow encapsulate her country’s post-war pain.

France Displaying poetic realism, “35 shots of Rhum” is an enchanting film by Claire Denis, one of the most underestimated filmmakers in the US. Set among a small circle of friends and neighbors in a Parisian suburb, the tale centers around the relationship between a father and daughter and the arrival of a handsome young man. Sumptuously filmed, this delicate, understated film deals with the issue of the difficulties involved in letting go of family ties, even when they are dictated by the natural progress of time. The 400 Blows/ Les 400 coups (1959) François Truffaut. France A young Parisian boy, Antoine Doinel, neglected by his derelict parents, skips school, sneaks into movies, runs away from home, steals things, and tries (disastrously) to return them. Like most kids, he gets into more trouble for things he thinks are right than for his actual trespasses. He inhabits a Paris of dingy flats, seedy arcades, abandoned factories, and workaday streets, a city that seems big and full of possibilities only to a child's eye. One of the main films of the nouvelle vague. The Adversary/ L' Adversaire (2002) Nicole Garcia. France Based on the 2000 book of the same name by Emmanuelle Carrère, this film is inspired by the real-life story of Jean Claude Romand who lived a lie for almost 20 years as he pursued an imaginary career as a doctor of medicine .

TREASURES FROM THE YALE FILM ARCHIVE WEDNESDAY AN ONGOING SERIES OF CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY FILMS PRESENTED IN 35MM BY THE YALE FILM STUDY CENTER JUNE 10, 2015 7:00PM • WHITNEY HUMANITIES CENTER PRESENTED WITH SUPPORT FROM PAUL L. JOSKOW ’70 M.PHIL., ’72 PH.D. La Vie e Rose La Vie en Rose Édith Piaf, one of the most popular and beloved singers of the twentieth century, had been the subject of previous films including Claude Lelouch’s ÉDITH ET MARCEL (1983), but before LA VIE EN ROSE, no film had attempted to tell the whole story of her fascinating and troubled life, from the slums of Paris to international stardom. As the director Olivier Dahan contemplated writing a screenplay about Piaf, he had Marion Cotillard in mind to play the international singing icon, saying that in Cotillard, o. he recognized Piaf’s eyes. LA VIE EN ROSE, and the critical reception to Cotillard’s performance, bore out his faith in her: N “Marion Cotillard’s feral portrait of the French singer Édith Piaf as a captive wild animal hurling herself at the bars of her cage 13 is the most astonishing immersion of one performer into the body and soul of another I’ve ever encountered in a film,”New York Times reviewer Stephen Holden wrote. Cotillard made her film debut in the early 1990s and came to Hollywood in the early 2000s, but it was her role as Piaf in LA VIE EN ROSE that brought her to international stardom. Her incandescent performance was awarded the Golden Globe, the BAFTA, the César, and the Oscar for Best Actress.

Paris, Female Stardom, and 1930s French Cinema DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Jennifer Branlat, M.A. Graduate Program in French and Italian The Ohio State University 2012 Dissertation Committee: Prof. Judith Mayne, Advisor Prof. Jean-François Fourny Prof. Jennifer Willging Copyright by Jennifer Branlat 2012 ABSTRACT This study investigates Parisian femininity in 1930s French cinema in order to show how representations of women draw from city spaces, real or imagined, and the extent to which these images are made visible by the French star system as it reorganizes with the advent of sound. I claim that the three stars of this study, Annabella, Arletty, and Danielle Darrieux, develop distinctly Parisian star images that draw from both a past cultural tradition that eroticizes the urban lower-class woman and modern ideals concerning her independence and mobility through the urban environment. My analysis of representations of women in the films Quatorze juillet (René Clair, 1933), Hôtel du Nord (Marcel Carné, 1938), Abus de confiance and Retour à l’aube (Henri Decoin, 1937, 1938) reveals that, while archetypal figures like the midinette (shopgirl) and the prostitute are anchored in idealized images of the popular neighborhood life of the past, the appearance of a modern woman in the second half of the decade is concurrent with looking to new city spaces and experiences to tell stories about women. Solitary walking, driving, shopping, and going to the cinema, for example, are depicted as privileged moments of reflection or leisure offered to women in the public sphere.
