    1. INTRODUCTION: FROM IMMIGRANT CINEMA TO NATIONAL CINEMA Press In September 2010, Maghrebi-French filmmaker Rachid Bouchareb’s seventh feature film, Hors-la-loi, a gangster film set against the backdrop of the Algerian war for independence, was released across cinemas in France. Made for a budget of €20m, released onUniversity more than 400 prints and starring Jamel Debbouze – a French-born actor of Moroccan immigrant parents and one of French cinema’s biggest stars – Hors-la-loi enjoyed the kind of distribution and marketing conditions reserved for onlyCinema the most high-profile French main- stream productions. The film aimed to capitalise on the success of Bouchareb’s Second World War epic, Indigènes (2006), which attracted over three million spectators in France and received an Academy Award nomination for best foreign film (admittedly as an Algerian rather than French film). If Indigènes’ message to its French audience was simultaneously confrontational and con- ciliatory, holdingEdinburgh successive French governments to account for freezing the pensions of North African colonial soldiers at the same time as it argued for the rightful placePost-Beur of the French-born descendants of these colonial veterans in France, Hors-la-loi proved far more controversial. At the film’s premier in Cannes in May 2010, a group of protestors including veterans of the Algerian war, supporters of the far-right and harkis (Algerians who fought for the French in the war for independence) gathered on the Croisette to oppose what they saw as Hors-la-loi’s historical distortion of colonial history. Pressure was put on the organisers of the festival as well as French distributors and exhibitors to boycott the film that was attacked as ‘anti-French’ by Lionel Luca, a member of the centre-right UMP party (Jaffar 2010: 38).

  • Dossier De Presse

  • History and Memory
Days of Glory and Outside the Law: Counter-Historical Remembrances1 MOURAD el FAHLI INTRODUCTION French mainstream cinema has always celebrated and memorialized the resistance and heroism of white French soldiers and citizens, overlooking the decisive and vital contributions of the colonized to the independence of France and Europe in general from the Nazi regime. This erasure of the subaltern is the product of a Eurocentric History (with capital H) that “Appropriates the cultural and material production of non-Europeans while denying both their achievements and its own appropriation.” (Shohat and Stam 1994: pp 2, 3) Yet, via their films, French-Maghrebi filmmakers challenge and deconstruct such Eurocentric History through counter-filmmaking, screening a revisionist programme of alternative remembrance. This article will examine the ways Maghrebi diasporas in France through the example of Days of Glory and Outside the Law by Rachid Bouchareb re-represents and visualize their reality within France before and after its independence from the Nazi regime. The article will, thus, have three major sections. The first section revisits current debates on the rapport film, history and memory. It introduces the notion of historical remembrance in an attempt to depart from the dichotomy of memory/history. The second one examines French cinema in the occupation period; the purpose throughout is to illustrate the occultation of the Maghrebi soldiers and Africans in general from these narratives. The last section underlines the rewriting of History by French-Maghrebi filmmakers through the example of Rachid Bouchareb Days of Glory and Outside the Law. FROM MEMORY TO HISTORICAL REMEMBRANCE: Film theory and criticism have inherited the kind of questions and debates that characterized the other six arts; the relationship between artistic and historical narratives was- and is still-a major issue in these discussions.

  • Jonathan Ross Free Episodes Download Keanu Reeves Don’T Be Surprised If Keanu Reeves Gets a Golden Globe Nom for ‘Bill and Ted Face the Music’ – It’S the Keanu-Ssance
jonathan ross free episodes download keanu reeves Don’t be surprised if Keanu Reeves gets a Golden Globe nom for ‘Bill and Ted Face the Music’ – it’s the Keanu-ssance. To say the least, the “Bill and Ted” sci-fi comedies aren’t generally considered awards fare. They follow the title pair of stoned slackers (played by Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves ) as they travel through time. And yet, in the back of my mind, I keep having the sneaking feeling that we’re underestimating the latest film in the franchise, “Bill and Ted Face the Music,” at the Golden Globes. In particular, I think Reeves could get a surprise nom for Best Film Comedy/Musical Actor. “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” started the franchise back in 1989. Its awards success was limited to a couple of nominations at the Saturn Awards. The sequel, “Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey,” followed in 1991 with a couple more Saturn noms, including a win for William Sadler ‘s supporting performance as the Grim Reaper. Not exactly knocking on Oscar’s door. But a lot has changed in the last 30 years. Reeves, especially, has been enjoying a Keanu-ssance where the public has reevaluated his life and career in the context of his charitable, down-to-Earth public image and his comeback performances in the “John Wick” films. Even the Razzie Awards have come around: Reeves used to be a perennial nominee, but then they cited him for two Redeemer Awards (2014, 2019) for all the newfound goodwill he’s accumulated.
