Un’Introduzione Si smagliano allora nella compattezza del tessuto, i caritatevoli strappi dell’eccezione C. E. GADDA, La cognizione del dolore «Ad ogni modo una lettura che non si fa tanto per farla»1 – scrive Martin Heidegger nel semestre estivo del 1919, riportando la mente alle ricerche sistematiche di Emil Lask, contenute nella Logica della Filosofia e nella Dottrina del Giudizio. La fine recente di quella guerra, che gravava ancora sulle parole del corso friburghese, guidava la memoria verso quel giovane filosofo, la cui vita era rimasta sospesa nel fango delle trincee dell’aspro fronte orientale, ove le due patrie che lo contendevano – quella natale galiziana, quella eletta tedesca – lo avevano trascinato. Stava allora terminando il devastante quadriennio bellico, in cui si disperse quella ricca generazione di studiosi, che era stata educata nel momento di più grande rigoglio ed apertura dell’accademia tedesca, attorno a monumenti scientifici come Marburg, Heidelberg, Göttingen, e che ne avrebbe nutrito la cultura, in virtù del richiamo ad un ideale ancora illuministico della scienza. Fu proprio su questa leva – distrutta dalla guerra, quand’anche riuscì a sfuggire alle granate2 – che l’unione volontaria di Lask alle truppe in conflitto e la sua intempestiva caduta incisero una ferita così profonda, come mostrano le parole di Max Weber, in una greve lettera ai familiari dell’amico, che possiamo considerare una sorta di documento vissuto della tonalità spirituale di Lask e della sua condotta nell’indagine filosofica, di quel patimento per la distanza, cui inevitabilmente consegna la riflessione. La precocità del suo destino – che restò nei versi del più grande poeta ungherese del Novecento, Mihaly Babits3 – segnò il suo opus filosofico con la cifra dell’incompiutezza. L’abbondanza di riferimenti che si intessevano nei sui scritti editi, ed ancora di più la folla di appunti che, come in un giornale di bordo, riportavano notizie di letture e di ripensamenti, di revisioni e di note polemiche, così come la sorte del suo breve magistero universitario, che aveva coinvolto tra i suoi uditori buona parte della leva della filosofia del Novecento – come Heidegger, Lukács, Jaspers, Plessner, Szilasi – guadagnò al pensiero laskiano l’immagine dell’uomo in cammino. In quell’atmosfera autunnale, che lentamente avrebbe condotto alla repubblica di Weimar, altare su cui si dissanguarono i Gelehrten, gli intellettuali, forzando l’impegno della propria ragione nell’osservazione di una vicenda storica incombente, ed a molti occhi rimasta incompresa, la formazione intellettuale di Emil Lask rimase come l’enunciazione di una possibilità, un gesto tracciato in aria e non compiuto. 1 M. Tra Marburg ed il Baden, in fuga dal neokantismo verso la fenomenologia, dal criticismo alla metafisica, all’indietro da Copernico a Tolomeo, dalla teoria della conoscenza all’ermeneutica esistenziale, la marca del suo Denkweg fu da subito definita per contrasto, in negativo, per ciò che non sembrava più essere o per ciò che pareva stesse diventando. Il tronco filosofico cui Lask aveva lavorato, veniva pertanto evocato come un mezzo di contrasto per lasciare balenare, o non, la presenza di alcuni agenti o di altre suggestioni. Così Heidegger ne apprezzò la capacità di intendere

Part of this re­ assessment concerns those philosophers who, during the lives of Husserl and Heidegger, sought to defend an updated version of Kant’s philosophy, the neo-Kantians. The chapter shows where the phenomenologists were able to benefit from some of the insights on the part of Kant and the neo-Kantians, but also clearly points to the differences.     NORMATIVITY AND PHENOMENOLOGY IN HUSSERL AND HEIDEGGER Steven Crowell has been for many years a leading voice in debates on twentieth-century European philosophy. h is volume presents thirteen recent essays that together provide a systematic account of the relation between meaningful experience (intentionality) and responsiveness to norms. h ey argue for a new understanding of the philosophical import- ance of phenomenology, taking the work of Husserl and Heidegger as exemplary, and introducing a conception of phenomenology broad enough to encompass the practices of both philosophers. THE CRISIS OF NEO-KANTIANISM AND THE REASSESSMENT OF KANT AFTER WORLD WAR I: PRELIMINARY REMARKphil_346 17..40 PETER UWE HOHENDAHL The papers to be presented at this conference deal with a decisive turning point in the understanding of Immanuel Kant in the first half of the 20th century. What we can observe is an increasingly radical transformation, not only with respect to the interpretation of Kant but also concerning the attitude toward Critical Philosophy, that is, Kantianism in general. My remarks will try to throw some light on this turn or divide, which in the minds of those involved was sometimes referred to as the divide between the old and the new way of thinking. I have decided to focus on two issues. First of all, I want to look at the stakes of this conference. Why is it important to reexamine the turn in Kant studies in the early 20th century? Second, I want to look briefly at five thinkers to show what is involved in the challenge to and the break with the Kant orthodoxy of the prewar era. My examples will be Georg Lukács, Rudolf Carnap, Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, and finally Max Horkheimer. In discussing these authors, I will focus more on the moment of redefining the approach to Kant without fully exploring the history of their prior involvement with Kant or the neo-Kantians. The result of this method is potentially an overemphasis on the moment of opposition and critique while aspects of continuity are mentioned but not stressed.1 It would not be difficult for instance to show the continued influence of neo-Kantianism in the German academy of the 1920s.

HEIDEGGER'S Habilitation By July of 1915 the young Dr. Martin Heidegger was ready to apply for a license to teach at Freiburg University.1 Two years earlier, in the summer of 1913, he had obtained the doctorate in philosophy with his inaugural dis­ sertation, The Doctrine ofJudgment in Psychologism. He had then set to work on his qualifying dissertation (Habilitationsschrift), but events had conspired to interrupt him. On August 1, 1914 the First World War broke out, and between August and October Heidegger was in and out of active military service twice, both times with Infantry Reserve Battalion 113, once as a volunteer (ca. August 2-10,1914) and once as a draftee (October 9-20,1914). In both cases he was dismissed for reasons of health. 2 By the spring of 1915 Heidegger, then twenty-five years of age, had man­ aged to finish his qualifying dissertation, Duns Scotus' Doctrine of Categories and Meaning, 3 under the directorship of Professor Heinrich Rickert.4 (Husserl was still at Gottingen and would begin teaching in Freiburg as Rickert's successor only in the spring of 1916). The discovery of "phenomenological seeing," however, does not lead him to a separation from, but rather to a new interpretation of, Aristotle and to a deeper grasp of "Greek thinking, if not indeed of philo- sophy as such."' Heinrich Rickert-Husserl's predecessor at Freiburg until 1919 and the teacher of Heidegger-a neo-Kantian philosopher, shaped quite substantially Heidegger's early development especially through his seminars dealing with the writings of Emil Lask (who mediates between neo-Kantian philosophy and Husserl, but remains open to the Greeks). Taking the first steps on his path to the question of Being, the young Heidegger becomes critical of both Rickert and Husserl, indeed of the philosophical trends of the times, without forgetting his indebtness to his "masters." Neo-Kantianism and Phenomenology: Antagonism and Convergence The changes which took place in philosophy at the turn of the present century were of a quite peculiarly dramatic sort. ‘With the year 1900,’ as Bertrand Russell was to recall later on, ‘there began a revolt against German idealism’1 which marked not only the philosophy of the Anglo-Saxon world and of the Austria of Brentano and Meinong, but also German philosophy itself. The idealist philosophy of Neo- Kantianism, both in its Freiburg and in its Marburg versions, lost ground – gradually, but irreversibly – especially after the ‘new movement’ of phenomenology2 began to crystallize around Husserl’s Logical Investigations of 1900/01. This decline of Neo-Kantianism was becoming clear already before Heidegger’s call to Marburg in 1923, and indeed the fate of Neo-Kantianism even in its very bastions was sealed when Husserl took over Heinrich Rickert’s Freiburg chair of philosophy in 1916.3 Husserl publicly adverted to this fact in his Freiburg inaugural lecture of 1917 when he pointed out, with regard to the new, re-tooled Kantianism of his predecessor, that ‘in contrast to the secondary productivity of such re-birth philosophies, it is in most recent times the demand for a wholly radical philosophy that is forcing itself upon us.’4 This sentiment prevailed not only in phenomenological quarters. Goethe1 Rickert revisited The Reformation and in its wake the Enlightenment caused a penetrating transformation in Germany of the medieval universities in general and of philosophy in particular. It was a change from the medieval, other-worldly scholarship supervised and ideologically drenched by the Roman-Catholic Church, to a early-modern, inner- worldly professional training of lawyers, medical doctors and protestant ministers. The theological faculty, for instance, still viewed as the first and most important faculty, was rebuilt in the 16th century into a retraining institution for catholic priests converted to Lutheran Protestantism. The Enlightenment introduced not only a secularized version of rationalism but emphasized also the utilitarian notion of a practical education of young men who after their academic training were going to function as the societal elite of the future. In other words, the post-medieval, early- modern university was in fact a professional school in which young men were trained for practical jobs in the rapidly changing society. German Romanticism of the 18th and 19th centuries would soon object to this one-sided emphasis upon rational, practical and applied knowledge and allied skills, launching its ideal of Bildung, i.e. of an education in which students were primarily taught to cultivate and strengthen their mental as well as moral capacities. Schelling, Schleiermacher and Fichte were the first propagandists of this Romantic Bildungsideal, but it was perhaps best expressed by Friedrich Schiller in his inaugural address at the University of Jena in the historically so pregnant year 1789.

During this period, a critical mass of intellectuals interacted with one another in close contact. These figures included, among others, Max and Marianne Weber, Edgar Jaffé and Else Jaffé-von Richtofen, Emil Lederer, Heinrich Rickert, Ernst Bloch, Georg von Lukács, Emil Lask, and Gustav Radbruch. Although this group came from numerous different intellectual contexts—e.g., neo-Kantian philosophy, antipositivistic sociology, romantic anti-capitalism—they each left their marks on one another, often publishing in the same journals, and most interacting with one another on the designated Sunday “jours” that the Webers’ held in their home on the Neckar.
