Dean of the Graduate School eV .•^C>v Goode, James Hubbard, The Fashoda Crisis: A Survey of Anglo-French Imperial Policy on the Upper Nile Question, 1882-1899. Doctor of Philosophy (History), December, 1971, 235 pp., bibliography, 161 titles. Early and recent interpretations of imperialism and long-range expansionist policies of Britain and France during the period of so-called "new imperialism" after 1870 are examined as factors in the causes of the Fashoda Crisis of 1898-1899. British, French, and German diplomatic docu- ments, memoirs, eye-witness accounts, journals, letters, newspaper and journal articles, and secondary works form the basis of the study. Anglo-French rivalry for overseas territories is traced from the Age of Discovery to the British occupation of Egypt in 1882, the event which, more than any other, triggered the opening up of Africa by Europeans. The British intention to build a railroad and an empire from Cairo to Capetown and the French dream of drawing a line of authority from the mouth of the Congo River to Djibouti, on the Red Sea, for Tied a huge cross of European imperialism over the African continent, The point of intersection was the mud-hut village of Fashoda on the left bank of the White Nile south of Khartoum. The. Fashoda meeting, on September 19, 1898, of Captain Jean-Baptiste Marchand, representing France, and General Sir Herbert Kitchener, representing Britain and Egypt, touched off an international crisis, almost resulting in global war.

  • MEMPHIS and ITS NECROPOLIS – the PYRAMID FIELDS from GIZA to DAHSHUR WORLD HERITAGE SITE, EGYPT Designated a World Heritage Site in 1979
MEMPHIS AND ITS NECROPOLIS – THE PYRAMID FIELDS FROM GIZA TO DAHSHUR WORLD HERITAGE SITE, EGYPT Designated a World Heritage Site in 1979 WHY IS THIS A WORLD HERITAGE SITE? Memphis was the capital of the Old Kingdom of Egypt, from its foundation (ca. 3100 BC) until 2200 BC. The ruins of Memphis are 19 km (12 miles) south of Cairo, on the west bank of the Nile. There are some extraordinary funerary monuments, including rock tombs, ornate mastabas, temples and pyramids. In ancient times, the site was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The site was added to the World Heritage List in 1979, recognizing the universal admiration for the Pyramids, their antiquity and the exceptional civilization they represent. MEMPHIS AND ITS NECROPOLIS WORLD HERITAGE SITE Flag of Egypt Ancient and modern Egypt come face to face July 1997, UNESCO Courier In the last few years rampant population growth and urban sprawl have combined to pose an increasingly serious threat to Egypt's archaeological monuments and sites. The ugly side-effects of urban development - water, air and noise pollution, constant vibrations and damage to the environment - are well known to all the world's city-dwellers. Cairo's older inhabitants remember that only fifty years ago the main road to the pyramids, beginning in Giza Square, ran through fields before reaching the pyramids in the desert. At that time the pyramids could be seen eight kilometres away. Now only a forest of buildings is visible from Giza Square. Traffic congestion choked the road so severely that another road was built parallel to it, encroaching on farmland which was replaced by more bottlenecks and anarchic ribbon building.

  • Applying Cliodynamic Theories to Republican Egypt
History by the Numbers: Applying Cliodynamic Theories to Republican Egypt Abstract Cliodynamics is a recently developed field which seeks to describe long term patterns in history using rigorous computation and “big data”. Quantitative explanations in history are not new, yet the popularity of Cliodynamics and similar quantitative efforts cannot be disregarded. In this piece, I test three quantitative stability models—the Structural-Demographic model, the Global Conflict Risk Index, and the Selfish Elite Model—by applying them to two instances of instability in Republican Egypt: the 1977 Bread Riots and the 1986 Conscripts Riots. I then provide my own qualitative account for these events, utilizing secondary sources, economic data, and articles from the Egyptian and Western press. I conclude that the Structural- Demographic and Selfish Elite models inform the understanding of the two riots by providing a framework which instances of instability can be generally understood. The Global Conflict Risk Index fails to anticipate the two riots. I argue further that the 1977 Bread Riots were, in addition to the quantitative conditions described in the models, a result of a failure of Egyptian government to uphold its “moral economy”. Similar public sentiment fueled the Conscripts Riots, along with economic anxiety and national humiliation. Keywords: Cliodynamics, Structural-Demographic Model, Global Conflict Risk Index, Selfish Elite Model, 1977 Bread Riots, 1986 Conscripts Riots, Infitah, Moral Economy History by the Numbers - 2 Introduction It happened again. The arrogance of humanity, knowing no bounds, have led a group of scholars to attempt to describe social phenomena, history, and the human narrative in terms of law-like or patterned explanations.

Grandma says it’s the same every morning. First the imam in the mosque calls us to pray, then the birds wake up, the dogs, and the donkeys. Then the people come making noise to tell us they’re here to sell things. It’s 7 o’clock and Dad’s waking me up for school. My name’s Hesham and I’m 6 years old. I have a sister named Sara. She’s 3. And we have a brand new baby brother named Mahmud. We’re staying here at Grandma's house so she can help take care of Mahmud so Mommy can rest until she feels stronger. Mom says we’ll probably go home in about a month. For breakfast I’m having tea, milk, a piece of cake and sweet bread that I dip in my tea. It gets hot here, so Mom puts lotion on my face to keep my skin from drying out in the desert air.

9 The Three Caliphates, a Comparative Approach Glaire D. Anderson and Jennifer Pruitt Introduction By the end of the ninth century a shared international Islamic visual language, exhibiting local variations but recognizably engaged with models established by the Abbasid caliphal court, was established across the Islamic empire and evident in broad trends in urbanism, architecture, portable objects, and material culture (Hoffman 2008: 107–108; Saba 2012: 187–190). Comparable perhaps to the development and subsequent spread of the Romanesque and Gothic modes across Europe, the early caliphal period of the ninth and tenth centuries is marked by similarities in overall concepts and visual modes, which found expression in the imperial capitals of Baghdad and Samarra, and subsequently in Cordoba and Cairo. Monuments and artistic developments of the caliphal courts were, however, indebted to regional practices and materials as well as expressive of negotiations between factional dynastic and pan‐Islamic trends. The appearance of the Fatimid dynasty (r. 909–1171) in North Africa made explicit the political and religious fragmentation of the caliphal lands. At this time, the Fatimids challenged Abbasid religious and political hegemony, declaring their rival Shiʿi caliphate in 909. The emergence of this Fatimid claim to the caliphate was a catalyst in the Cordoban Umayyads’ (r. 756–1031) subsequent assumption, after centuries as a semi‐independent emirate, of caliphal authority in 929. Thus for the very specific period between 909 and 1031 (the year when the Cordoban caliphate was dissolved) the Islamic lands witnessed an unprecedented contest for caliphal authority, a contest in which art and architecture played a major role.
