A diorama is a three-dimensional model or scene of a place. You find dioramas in museums. Have you been to a museum that has big dinosaurs or scenes of animals and their habitats? These are examples dioramas. The one you make will be a little different because you will be able to touch and change the scene. Materials Needed: - A square or rectangular tub / container. - Your homemade moon sand. - Different sized cups to serve as mountain and volcano molds, plastic animals, dinosaurs, and figures. - Green legos for grassy area (if you do not have Legos you can color some of your moon sand green). - Lego people or miniature figures. JOY•PURPOSE•COMPASSION Sensorial – Mountain Range Bin Instructions: 1. Fill the tub/bin with some of your moon sand. 2. Fill your different sized cups with moon sand, like you would do when making a sand castle. Make sure to pack the moon sand lightly into the cup and smooth the top. 3. Turn the cup upside down in your bin to release the moon sand in your cup. 4. Continue to make different shaped molds so that eventually you will have mountains and volcanoes. 5. Arrange your animals, dinosaurs and people throughout your mountain range. JOY•PURPOSE•COMPASSION Sensorial – Mountain Range Bin Now try this: 1. Create an African Safari Themed Bin. What animals would you find in Africa? If you have them around your house place them in your African Safari. Use popsicle sticks for homes or roads. Use a car, or truck or make one out of legos and place it on your road. 1. Create an Ocean Themed Bin. What animals and creatures would you find in the ocean? Use seashells as well as rocks and change up your animal objects for ocean ones if you have them. You can use boats as well as use your popsicle sticks to make some! 1. Create a Space Themed Bin. Line your bin with dark paper. Use some of the moon sand to shape your planets and create craters. How many planets should you have? Do you have stars around your house that you could add to your bin? 1. Use a blindfold to isolate the tactile sense and to create a different experience while exploring your bin! JOY•PURPOSE•COMPASSION Creative Time – Spring Branch Parents, this activity helps to practice fine motor skills with the application of the tissue paper. In this creative activity you will design your own spring branch! It will be bright and cheerful, to represent spring. Materials Needed: - A sheet of Paper (construction paper, if possible) - Colorful tissue paper (For example, you can recycle pieces of used gift tissue) - Craft glue - A brown marker JOY•PURPOSE•COMPASSION Creative Time – Spring Branch Instructions: 1. Draw a few branches on a piece of paper with a brown marker. 2. Tear tissue paper into small pieces. If you are using different colored tissue paper be sure to tear all the colors. 3. Scrunch up the small pieces of tissue paper. These will become the flowers for your spring branch. 4. Dip your “flowers” into some glue and then stick them on the branches, you drew on your paper. 5. Be sure to sign your artwork! Find a special place to put your art. JOY•PURPOSE•COMPASSION Language – Recycled Alphabet Parents, this is a fun, long-term project that practices the alphabet as well as fine motor skills. This activity also helps children to practice decoding skills. Materials Needed: - A piece of paper - A few construction paper scraps (or paper of a different color) - Glue - A pen - Scissors - A few old magazines/catalogs/newspapers that can be cut up. Remember, this activity will take a lot of time! It does not need to be completed all at once. JOY•PURPOSE•COMPASSION Language – Recycled Alphabet Instructions: 1. Begin by cutting your construction paper into 26 squares (or any other shape). This will make a fun frame for your letters. However, this is optional you may skip this part and simply glue the letters onto the paper. 2. Write a letter from the alphabet on each piece of the construction paper squares. If you are not using the construction paper write the letters of the alphabet on your paper. 3. Glue the colored pieces of paper onto your paper. They should be in a line like you would see the alphabet. 4. Look through your magazines, newspapers, or catalogs to find the corresponding letters for your squares. 5. When you find a letter that matches yours cut the corresponding letters out from your recycled materials. 6. Start gluing the letters on to the correct square. JOY•PURPOSE•COMPASSION Language – Recycled Alphabet Now try this: - To make this activity more challenging have find only uppercase letters. - Now, find only lowercase letters. - Spell your name with recycled letters. - Use the letters you find to spell words or other family members names. JOY•PURPOSE•COMPASSION Geography – Egypt This week we will be looking at the beauty and history of Egypt. Egypt is a country on the northern coast of Africa. Egypt has different types of landscape. Southern Egypt's landscape has low mountains and desert. Northern Egypt has wide valleys near the Nile River and desert to the east and west. Did you know that the Nile River is the longest river in the world? JOY•PURPOSE•COMPASSION Geography – Egypt The Egyptian Flag As you know every country has a flag to represent them. These flags have different meanings. The Egyptian flag is has three colors with three equal horizontal bands of red, white, and black, from top to bottom. The national emblem, the Eagle of Saladin, is in the center of the white band. The eagle is guarded by a shield, and holds a scroll on which the name of the state (Arab Republic of Egypt) is etched in Arabic script. The Eagle of Saladin represents authority, beauty, and sovereignty. Can you create your own flag of Egypt and add it to your African banner? Materials Needed: - A print out of the Egyptian Flag. Link here: https://www.mapsofworld.com/flags/pdf-flags/Flag_of_Egypt.pdf - Green, red, black, and gold / yellow crayons, markers, or colored pencils. JOY•PURPOSE•COMPASSION Geography – Egypt Today, we will become archeologists. Do you know what an archeologist does? Archaeology is the study of things that people made, used, and left behind. The purpose of archaeology is to understand what people of the past were like and how they lived. Scientists who study archaeology are called archaeologists. Let’s get our binoculars out a take a quick trip back to ancient Egypt! JOY•PURPOSE•COMPASSION Geography – Egypt Many beautiful artifacts have been discovered by archeologists including hieroglyphics. These hieroglyphics were like story books that told of daily life and how and what Egyptians worshiped. The ancient Egyptians also left paintings and carvings of large animals like elephants, hippos, leopards, and cheetahs. These animals were once common in Egypt, but they are now rare or extinct because of hunting and habitat loss. Can you identify any of these ancient animals in this painting below? JOY•PURPOSE•COMPASSION Geography – Egypt The ancient Egyptians used symbols in their art and religion. One symbol was the common Scarab bug. A Scarab Bug is a beetle found all over ancient Egypt. To Egyptians, the Scarab bug symbolized the returning of life. The Scarab was a popular design for good luck charms. Now let’s color or create your own scarab! Materials Needed: - Print out and use the template below to color your scarab OR use these materials to make a 3-D scarab: leftover clay or Play-doh, colorful sequins, and small beads. - Crayons, paint, colored pencils, or markers will be needed if you are coloring your Scarab. Instructions for coloring: Print out this template. JOY•PURPOSE•COMPASSION Geography – Egypt Instructions for clay Scarab: 1. Use your leftover clay or playdough to make a small ball. 2. Flatten the ball on top just a little so that it looks like a round small “beetle”. 3. Press in colorful sequins and beads to cover the top of the beetle. 4. Let your beetle dry! Now try this: • After you viewed the beautiful land of ancient Egypt, draw your own Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx. • Try to create your own story by inventing your own hieroglyphics. • Create some pyramids in your mood sand.
