The bibliographic materials are generally adapted for use by bilingual teachers. Many familiar works included in the compilation have been translated from foreign languages into Spanish. Wherever they’s a cop beatin’ up a guy, I’ll be there. I’ll be in the way guys yell when Rthey’re mad an’—I’ll be in the way kids laugh when they’re hungry an’ they know supper’s ready. An’ when our folks eat the stuff they raise an’ live in the houses they build—why, I’ll be there.” We suspect our Tom will be found in those same precincts. Professor emeritus Tom Kennedy died this past January but hasn’t gone anyplace far. Few around here are as fondly or vividly recalled by alumni and colleagues. And no one’s name is as frequently invoked when there’s some injustice to be decried—whether cosmic or collegiate. Long the senior member of History’s Ohio delegation, Tom Kennedy was born in Dayton on September 25, 1937. “Raised in an Irish-American tribe,” Tom declared himself to have been “well-educated, in so far as he was willing to cooperate, in good Catholic institutions, where he learned to love history and literature but, alas, to The Class of 1967: David Sloan, Tom Kennedy, dislike, beyond arithmetic, all things connected to mathematics.” He earned a BA and David Edwards from the University of Dayton and subsequently spent two years with the Army’s 14th Armored Cavalry Regiment out on the frontlines of the Cold War (which, to Tom’s satisfaction, remained on ice for the duration of his service).

    MÓIN-MÓIN 53 Puppet theatre in Italy John McCormick Many puppet traditions can be traced back to Italy. For geographical, social, historical and political reasons Italy includes some of the poorest regions of Europe. Emigration has always been endemic. Amongst those leaving Italy, whether on a seasonal or more permanent basis, were de Estudos sobreRevista T entertainers. The actors of the Commedia dell’Arte found they could earn more money abroad, whether in France, Spain, England, the German states or even Russia. Some of these brought puppets with them. By the mid seventeenth century puppet showmen with their companies were travelling with marionette performances and these were often called after the main figure, Pulcinella. Glove puppet players belonged more to the ranks of street entertainers, and travelled with a rudimentary stage and a few puppets. The most famous of these was Giovanni Piccini of Piacenza, who probably reached England around 1780 and became the “father” of the English Ani Formas de eatro Punch and Judy show. By the nineteenth century, showmen were crossing the Atlantic Ocean with increasing frequency, particularly visiting South America. In Classical times there are plenty of references to show that puppets were familiar to people in Italy. It is highly likely that medieval clerics used marionettes as a means of teaching the scriptures, but that, like the mystery plays, these passed rapidly into the hands of popular entertainers and soon madas became secularised. There is also evidence of simple street glove-puppet shows.
