Presentation of Rarely Seen Works by Early 20th Century Female Practitioners Alongside Acclaimed Works Expands Narrative of Modern Photography A Modern Love: Photographs from the Israel Museum Brings Together Iconic Masterpieces and Unknown Avant-garde Artists from the Israel Museum’s Collections On view at Israel Museum July 16, 2019 – January 5, 2020 Jerusalem, Israel, August 1, 2019 – Modern Love: Photographs from the Israel Museum delves into the work of photographers who shaped and defined photography between 1900-1945, helping to expand public understanding of early modern photography through a presentation that brings together acclaimed and unknown works by male and female artists. Featuring around 200 works from seminal artists such as Alfred Stieglitz, August Sander, Edward Weston, and Man Ray, alongside lesser-known photographers such as Liselotte Grschebina, ringl+pit, Laure Albin Guillot, and Frieda Meyer Jakobson, the exhibition fosters a deeper level of understanding around the development of cultural production at the time and uncovers unexpected and surprising discoveries, including a personal note written by Alfred Stieglitz on the back of the 1916 print Portrait of Marie Rapp. The exhibition also fosters contemporary relevancy around the works, connecting camera techniques by Modern photographers to current images captured by cell phones. “Modern Love: Photographs from the Israel Museum showcases the Museum’s incredible photography collection and demonstrates its continued commitment to supporting the exploration and exhibition of images through robust programming and curatorial expertise,” said Ido Bruno, Anne and Jerome Fisher Director of the Israel Museum. “I am thrilled that our visitors will have the opportunity to experience this unique selection of iconic Modern photographs drawn from the Museum’s extensive holdings, many which are going on display for the first time.” Drawing on a recent gift from collector Gary B. -
Dresden Paintings in the Permanent Collection Galleries
DRESDEN PAINTINGS IN THE PERMANENT COLLECTION GALLERIES To complement the display of works by two of the best-known artists who worked in Dresden, Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) and Gerhard Richter (born 1932), thirteen works from the Galerie Neue Meister are interspersed throughout the paintings galleries of the J. Paul Getty Museum in juxtapositions with works from the Getty’s permanent collection. Rather than following a strict chronology, the pairings touch on key themes in German painting from 1800 to the present and highlight the artists’ diverse approaches to similar subjects. They also illustrate the relationship between German art and that produced elsewhere in Europe, the connection between hsitory and art in Germany, and the role of Dresden in the development of German art. Media Release Paul Gauguin 8 February to 28 June 2015 With Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), the Fondation Beyeler presents one of the most important and fascinating artists in history. As one of the great European cultural highlights in the year 2015, the exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler brings together over fifty masterpieces by Gauguin from leading international museums and private collections. This is the most dazzling exhibition of masterpieces by this exceptional, groundbreaking French artist that has been held in Switzerland for sixty years; the last major retrospective in neighbouring countries dates back around ten years. Over six years in the making, the show is the most elaborate exhibition project in the Fondation Beyeler’s history. The museum is consequently expecting a record number of visitors. The exhibition features Gauguin’s multifaceted self-portraits as well as the visionary, spiritual paintings from his time in Brittany, but it mainly focuses on the world-famous paintings he created in Tahiti. In them, the artist celebrates his ideal of an unspoilt exotic world, harmoniously combining nature and culture, mysticism and eroticism, dream and reality. In addition to paintings, the exhibition includes a selection of Gauguin’s enigmatic sculptures that evoke the art of the South Seas that had by then already largely vanished. GALERIE JOCELYN WOLFF MARCELLE CAHN PORTFOLIO Updated July 2021 GALERIE JOCELYN WOLFF Member of the group “Cercle et Carré”, Marcelle Cahn's works from the very first period of her production are linked to expressionism thanks to her expressionist master Lovis Corinth in Berlin, then to cubism by joining the courses of the Modern Academy in the studio of Fernand Léger and Amédée Ozenfant in Paris where she did not go beyond abstraction, proposing a personal style combining geometric rigor and sensitivity; finally she joined purism and constructivism. After the War, she regularly participates in the “Salon des Réalités Nouvelles”, where she shows her abstract compositions. It is at this time that she will define the style that characterizes her paintings with white backgrounds crossed by a play of lines or forms in relief, it is also at this time that she realizes her astonishing collages created from everyday supports: envelopes, labels, photographs, postcards, stickers. III), 1938 Fondation Beyeler, Riehen/Basel, Beyeler Collection. © Mondrian/Holtzman, 2020 The work of the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian within the context of the movement De Stijl [The Style] set the course of geometric abstract art from the Netherlands and contributed to the drastic change in visual culture after the First World War. His concept of beauty based on the surface, on the structure and composition of color and lines, shaped a novel and innovative style that aimed at breaking down the frontiers between disciplines and surpassing the traditional limits of pictorial space. De Stijl, the magazine of the same name founded in 1917 by the painter and critic Theo van Doesburg, was the platform for spreading the ideas of this new art and overcoming traditional Dutch provincialism. Contrary to what has often been said, the members of De Stijl did not pursue a utopia but a world where collaboration between all disciplines would make it possible to abolish hierarchies among the arts. These would thus be freed to merge together and give rise to something new, a reality better adapted to the world of modernity that was just starting to be glimpsed. Piet Mondrian (Amersfoort, Netherlands, 1872-New York, 1944) is considered one of the founders of this new art. His progressive ideas about the relationship between art and society grew from the deep- rooted Dutch realist tradition inherited from the seventeenth century. -

Edward Gorey Phantasmagorey, 1974 Pen and ink with collage on paper Collection of Clifford Ross Phantasmagorey is a play on the term “phantasmagoria” which means: “a constantly shifting, complex succession of things seen or imagined.” Like a phantasmagoria, this series of six images reveals dreamlike glimpses into Gorey’s imagination. Each vignette shows a common motif in Gorey’s work, including a ghostly femme fatale, a cat sitting atop a stack of books, and a fur-coated self-portrait. This drawing was made for an exhibition of the same name, held at the Sterling Memorial Library, Yale University, in 1974. An art student named Clifford Ross, now a contemporary artist in his own right, curated the first survey of Gorey’s work for his senior thesis. 501 Harry Benson Scottish, born 1929 Edward Gorey in His New York City Apartment with Cat, 1978 Gelatin silver print Collection of the artist Benson’s photographic portrait offers a glimpse into Gorey’s apartment in Manhattan’s Murray Hill neighborhood, where he lived from 1953 to 1983. Gorey displayed his collection of fine art—including a print by Edvard Munch and drawings by Balthus—next to found objects that he treated as works of art, such as a weathered crucifix and a needlepoint of a skull. Out and about in the city, he took in movies, theater, dance, and art exhibitions. At home, he retreated to his creative sanctuary filled with obscure books, fine art, and his beloved cats.
