Kistner University of Washington Abstract Organizing Knowledge: Comparative Structures of Intersubjectivity in Nineteenth-Century Historical Dictionaries Kelly Kistner Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Gary G. Hamilton Sociology Between 1838 and 1857 language scholars throughout Europe were inspired to create a new kind of dictionary. Deemed historical dictionaries, their projects took an unprecedented leap in style and scale from earlier forms of lexicography. These lexicographers each sought to compile historical inventories of their national languages and were inspired by the new scientific approach of comparative philology. For them, this science promised a means to illuminate general processes of social change and variation, as well as the linguistic foundations for cultural and national unity. This study examines two such projects: The German Dictionary, Deutsches Worterbuch, of the Grimm Brothers, and what became the Oxford English Dictionary. Both works utilized collaborative models of large-scale, long-term production, yet the content of the dictionaries would differ in remarkable ways. The German dictionary would be characterized by its lack of definitions of meaning, its eclectic treatment of entries, rich analytical prose, and self- referential discourse; whereas the English dictionary would feature succinct, standardized, and impersonal entries. Using primary source materials, this research investigates why the dictionaries came to differ. -

I examine four poet- painters associated with the Japanese literati tradition in the Edo (1603-1867) and Meiji (1867- 1912) periods: Yosa Buson (1716-83), Ema Saikō (1787-1861), Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902) and Natsume Sōseki (1867-1916). Each artist fashions a lyric subjectivity constituted by the kinds of blending found in literati painting and poetry. I argue that each artist’s thoughts and feelings emerge in the tensions generated in the process of blending forms, genres, and the ideas (aesthetic, philosophical, social, cultural, and historical) that they carry with them. -

Baratashvili’s romanticism in close connection with the worldview of one of the most prominent creators and thinkers, “foremost” romanticist Novalis; on the basis of Novalis’ perception of the life romanticizing, using the technical means of polarization and potentiation it is studied how in the Nikoloz Baratashvili’s creative works the relationship with the universe, people, everyday occurrences is romanticized, the goal of which is to make the life intensive, full-blooded, to open its way towards infinity. Key words: Baratashvili, Novalis, romanticism, polarization, potentiation. Most of the writer-romanticists lived short lives: Edgar Allan Poe lived 40 years on this earth, Giacomo Leopardi and Juliusz Słowacki died at their 39th years of age, Charlotte Brontë passed away at the age of 38, Robert Burns and Alexander Pushkin diedat 37, George Gordon Byron – 36, José María Heredia – 35, Heinrich von Kleist, José de Espronceda and Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer – 34, Wilhelm Müller – 33, Percy Bysshe Shelley and Emily Brontë -30, Novalis, Anne Brontë and Branko Radičević – 29, Nikoloz Baratashvili – 27, Mikhail Lermontov, Sándor Petőfi, Karel Hynek Mácha and Karoline von Günderrode – 26, John Keats, Wilhelm Hauff and Wilhelm Heinrich Wackenroder – 25... and yet, in the short time of their lives, they created the literature of such a quality that they will remain in the memory of mankind forever; some of them marked the history of literature so profoundly that they still influence and will continue to influence in future the spiritual formation of people. How did they manage that? What explanation can be found? The answer to this conundrumhas to be found in their philosophy of life, in the philosophy of romantic life. -

Köhler and Schmidt, The enigmatic ground InterDisciplines 2 (2015) The enigmatic ground On the genesis of law out of emotion in the writings of Savigny and Uhland Sigrid G. Köhler and Florian Schmidt, translated by Charlton Payne The historical ground Emotion and law are not irreconcilable opposites. To be sure, according to a dominant »cultural script« of Western discourse since the eighteenth century, they are supposed to be incompatible (Maroney 2011, 657–64). There are many reasons for the dominance of this cultural script. Among them is the one-sided privileging of the Enlightenment as an age of rea- son, a privileging which forgets that the eighteenth century was also the age of emotion. Another would be the claim that law is universally valid and binding, which in the logic of the eighteenth century could only be based upon reason. A more precise look at contemporary as well as historical debates, however, shows that there indeed has been an at once enduring and sophisticated scholarly discussion about the function and relevance of emotion in law. The debate about law and emotion con- ducted in the USA but also in Germany since the 1980s has put the question of emotion once again back in the focus of investigations in legal studies and has spurred an interdisciplinary openness of the law to- wards research on emotion.1 In accordance with current transdisciplinary emotions research, emotions are now conceived as complex processes 1 For a representative volume on the debate in the US, see Bandes (1999), for the debate in the 1980s in Germany, see Lampe (1985). -

Willem Frijhoff Erasmus University Rotterdam / VU-University, Amsterdam) Report on the application of Tübingen for the UNESCO World Heritage List View from the Österberg across the historic city centre to Hohentübingen Castle Blick vom Österberg über die Altstadt zum Schloss Hohentübingen 2 Report on the application of Tübingen for the UNESCO World Heritage List Preamble This report has been written to substantiate the candidacy of the city of Tübingen (Baden-Württemberg, Germany) for the inclusion on the World Heritage List as the very model of a ‘university town’.* Many cities of Euro- pe and the Americas can rightfully boast of the richness of their historical legacy in matters of higher education and university life. Besides Tübingen, several other European towns owe their reputation to the preservation of a large number of historical buildings related to their university: Paris, Bolog- na, Oxford and Cambridge, Salamanca, Prague, Vilnius, Coimbra, Louvain, Uppsala and Alcalá de Henares, or outside Europe México City, Williams- burg (Virginia), even the modern Ciudad Universitaria of Caracas (placed on the World Cultural Heritage list in 2000). Just like Tübingen, other Ger- man towns such as Marburg, Heidelberg, Göttingen, Freiburg, Wittenberg, Helmstedt, Erfurt, Ingolstadt, Leipzig or Jena still possess many older or newer buildings attesting to their historical importance as towns endowed with a university. Even so, very few among them unite the prerequisites for “…Tübingen holds an unparalleled a nomination to the World Heritage List as a ‘university town’ in the fullest place because of the exceptional and most comprehensive sense of the word. -

PARIS 108, BOULEVARD SAINT-GERMAIN INTRODUCTION Les relations entre Thiers et Cotta sont demeurées peu connues jusqu'à présent. Elles ont toujours gardé aux yeux des contempo- rains un caractère secret et ce silence devait persister longtemps encore après la mort de Thiers, grâce aux précautions prises de leur vivant par les intéressés. Il devenait gênant, au surplus, de rappeler dans les ouvrages écrits après la guerre de 1870-71 en l'honneur du «Libérateur du Territoire», que c'était à un Allemand qu'il devait, pour une bonne part, la notoriété et les premiers succès acquis sous la Restauration, au temps de sa jeunesse. Ces rapports qui durèrent presque dix ans, de novembre 1823 à la mort de Cotta en 1832, eurent deux aspects. Thiers accepta, en effet, de servir d'homme de paille à l'éditeur allemand pour cer- taines affaires de presse menées en France, tandis que par ailleurs il fournissait régulièrement à la Gazelle d'Augsbourg une correspon- dance parisienne. Le secret semble avoir été plus soigneusement gardé dans ce dernier domaine que dans le premier. La collaboration à la Gazelle d'Augsbourg et la correspondance adressée par Thiers à Cotta, qui en est la base, sont demeurées réellement inconnues jusqu'à une date récente. Le premier travail qui signale cette chronique est celui de Schâffle sur Cotta 1 en 1895, puis vient l'étude de Heyck sur la Gazelle d'Augsbourg 2, parue en 1898. -
