Rideau Vineyard in Solvang is a singular, celebratory place. Here at the winery, we always say "What's Rideau Vineyard without our good old- fashioned Southern hospitality".

In the days leading up to a winery event, Iris Rideau can be found in her home kitchen, preparing her Okra Gumbo or Jambalaya; two dishes that have become synonymous with Rideau Vineyard events. Add to that the live jazz or blues bands that Iris often hires to play for her guests. Occasionally, Creole/Zydeco music can be heard drifting from the outdoor garden speakers as one drives up the main entrance to the winery.

Strands of shiny New Orleans beads are handed to arriving guests, who soon find themselves sashaying and swinging their hips to a particularly sexy riff of the traditional spicy music of days gone by. We could not have asked for a better day or for a better event. Of the 83 registered drivers, we had about 28 novices and 32 instructors - a very good balance. The weather was perfect and the people were... well, take a look at the smiles.

Our Driving Events Team, lead by Nick Perdikaris, Mike Mulligan and Marty Gold- Nick Perdikaris & smith, implemented some significant changes since our event last October. We Marty Goldsmith at timing purchased and learned to operate our wireless timing system. It took a while to get started, but by the end of timing everyone was very pleased. In the ensuing month there has been a slew of emails, phone calls and meetings analyzing procedures. We sent a questionnaire to all participants and received a lot of excellent feedback. We will be making some adjustments at our October 8 event that we expect will improve safety, increase track time and result in an even better event!

One of the things I am most pleased about is the new volunteers who have stepped up to help. We've added a good half dozen who want to be part of the overall Driving Suesan Way, Barbara Gillam & De Jur Jones - Grid team Events Team. It is a real sign of success when people ask you to find a job for them (we're pretty sure that the salary was not the attraction). I also want to thank our good friends to the south, the Orange Coast Region. Not only did they lend us helmets and advise us on our timing system purchase, but the ongoing exchange of information is a tremendous help in developing our overall systems. We also had great help from members of the Santa Barbara, San Diego and Cal Inland regions. We had instruc- tors from not only these regions, but also from Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Our new Sunday night Chalk Talk for novices and anyone else interested in attending, as well as having registration and tech inspection open at the same time proved to be a great idea. We managed to get 25-35% of our Monday morning workload complet- Mike Mulligan - Chief Driving ed Sunday night. In addition, the Mike Mulligan lead Chalk Talk was greatly appreciat- Instructor at Chalk Talk ed, and we got some good ideas for next time. Afterwards, about thirty of us enjoyed dinner at Barone's, just up the street from the Essex House. We want to thank the Essex House for their help. It's always a pleasure to be there amongst all the history (and photos) that its proximity to Edwards Air Force Base has provided.

The last big change we made this year was using paid corner workers. Oh my... if we'd only have known years ago. Participants were a lot less tired at the end of the day. Not having to spend an hour or more standing out in the sun did not hurt any- one's disposition and, the improvement to overall safety was obvious. Instructors got Peter Ross - Great photographer to spend more time working with students, drivers got to spend more time relaxing & Membership Chair and talking about driving, our staff spent a lot less time gathering corner workers and running them out to their stations and, drivers spent a lot more time on the track.

The big change we're contemplating for October is to have the lunch break and driver's meeting after our first two DE sessions (about 11:00am), go immediately into Autocross timing, then divide the rest of the day up into two more DE sessions. This will allow us to more fully utilize track time, since the biggest unknown in our schedule is how long it's going to take to do the timed runs.

Anyway, that's how the event shaped up. Overall, we couldn't be more pleased. Roving Tech Team - Mike Mulligan suggested that all drivers needing to have their cars tech'd put a helmet on top of the car. This would allow the Tech inspectors to easily see who needs help. We will get this information to participants.

Timing – Considering it was our first time out with the new equipment, things went extremely well. Marty has been in touch with the manufacturer and has found answers to several of our questions. The driving team will have another practice run before our October event.

Day Away Schedule – There was discussion about having 2 DE sessions, breaking for lunch and 2nd driver's meeting about 11:20, and start timed runs about 12:20. Once timing is complete we can divide the rest of the day into one or two more DE sessions, thus utilizing more potential track time.

Convertibles - We decided that all convertibles with tops must have them in the up position. We also decided to modify the GPX DE rules that all open cars must have roll over protection, and that factory roll over protection was adequate. Porsche had this protection in 911 Cabs from 1995 on and in all Boxsters. Earlier Cabs will need an after market roll over device.

Trophies and giveaways – It was agreed that our T-shirts are very well liked. Michael commented that he never fails to see someone wearing a GPX shirt at other car events he attends. We will continue to give shirts to each registrant.

We will look at different alternatives for trophies. The acrylic paperweights from the last event were well received.

Meeting adjourned at 1:30pm. FactoryWerks_SB_Ad 10/30/06 9:19 AM Page 1
