As you read this, Parade is less than one month away. Wow, less than a month! It’s been a long and eventful trip to get to this point, but here we are, ready or not. Harvey and the entire Parade committee have done an amazing job of jug- gling events, vendors, politics, and just the plain enormity of this whole thing. They all deserve a big thank you! Re- gardless of how things turn out, good or bad, I can honestly say I am proud of the effort put forward from the members of the Carolinas Region.

To that end….we need more help. There is a wealth of knowledge here in the Region that we desperately need to use. With Parade, we will be playing host to nearly 2,000 guests and we want to put our best foot forward. Even if you’re not attending Parade (and why aren’t you??), we could still use your help with things. Who better to keep things running smoothly than the good old hospitality of the Carolinas Region?

Six and a half years ago, when Nadine and I moved from New Jersey, we didn’t know what to expect from the people and the Porsche Club. We were immediately embraced and have loved every minute of our lives in Charlotte. I’m hop- ing we can bring a little bit of that to the many people visiting Charlotte and the Carolinas for the first time. If you can spare some time, please help us make Parade 2008 the best ever. Check out www.paradecharlotte.org, select an area of interest, and contact the chair person directly. Know your way around Charlotte? How about helping with the Conci- erge? Like to work on cars? How about the Tech committee? Or do you just want to meet people? Check-in, the Goodie Store, Hospitality, etc are all good ways to meet and greet everyone coming in. Anything you can do, no matter how small, can make a big impact.

I have been asked by our Goodie Store Chair, Sadie Kilcrease to remind everyone that the Carolinas Region Goodie Store will be set up in the Hospitality Room during Parade, NOT in the general Parade Goodie Store. There are many reasons for this, but one of the best reasons is that now Sadie and her staff will be able to give you much better per- sonal service than if all our stuff were lumped into the general Goodie Store. So, stop by, say hello, and I’m sure she’d love for you to buy some great Carolinas Region stuff!

If you haven’t signed up yet, there is probably still some space in the Drivers Ed at Lowe’s Motor Speedway on July 4-5. No, we are not just driving around the oval NASCAR style, we actually do right turns on the infield, while still utilizing much of the banked part of the track. It’s like nothing you’ve ever driven before, and should definitely be experienced. Go to the Carolinas Region website www.carolinas-pca.com to sign up.

By the time you read this, we will probably have just run our Autocross at Porsche of Hickory. Were you there? Plus, if you missed it, you also missed a great picnic that Porsche of Hickory put on for us. Based on what I know as I write this, it will be a wonderful day. I hope you came out and showed your support for these guys. They’ve done a great job supporting us through the past few years and it’s nice of them to put on events like this just for the members.

HUEY UPDATE: Huey is back from Autobahn Collision and Bill Dunster did a great job putting him back together. When I finish typing this, I will be working on the wiring for the gauges and all the dash controls. There is still a lot to do, but hopefully Huey will ride again at Parade.

Anyone want to help??? Free pizza and beer!! I hope to see you at an event soon!!

June 2008 — Page 6 Hickory Area Report Delmar Kiser, Area Director

Another month has rushed by and more good things keep happening for the Hickory Area. At our May meeting, 22 mem- bers were present for some good news and a great tech session given by Chuck Robertson, Porsche of Hickory's service manager. Chuck educated many of us on the finer points of brakes and brake service. I definitely learned some new things to put into practice for maintaining the most important system on my cars. Robert Yeomans then let everyone in on the news that after our autocross event at the dealership on June 7, they will be providing a fantastic picnic with things like softball games, the big blow up attractions for the kids, lots of food, ice cream and drinks. This will be a catered event so PLEASE RSVP by May 31 to [email protected] or call 828-304-9111. We need to get a good idea of the number of people to plan for. Bring the family and come out for the autocross and then picnic or just come to the picnic. We would love to have you and your family and friends there for this Spring Kick Off Picnic.

Don't forget, the goodie store will be open at the Westin Hospitality Suite starting June 28 and at the DEs July 4 and 5. Drop by and see Sadie and part with some of that hard earned cash. We look forward to seeing everyone for the Auto- cross and picnic June 7. This will be our first regional event in Hickory since the new area started and your support will be appreciated.

Keep the greasy side down till next month.

Delmar

Metrolina Area Report Mike Masterson, Area Director

We held our meeting on May 15 and welcomed new members Matt Rossi, Gene Christiansen and Chris Redburn. With Parade ’08 now just days away, Harvey Yancey gave us some up-dates. The event is somewhat over budget and steps are being taken to correct the situation. Over 700 people have signed up for the NASCAR shop tours to be conducted during Parade week. The ever popular Autocross is over subscribed and it would take many hours more than originally planned to have everyone run, so some adjustments will be made there also. 198 cars are signed up for the Concours section of Parade, so that should be quite an event for spectators as well as competitors. The historic display seems to be picking up momentum, so registrants can expect to view many rare and historic street and race cars on display.

Jack Christine gave us an update on the recent Carolinas Region board meeting. He said plans for the Region pool party, scheduled for July 19 and to be held at the home of Paula and Gene Kendrick of Spartanburg are now set. He also stated that the Region’s Porschefest ’09 will be hosted by the Mountain Area.

Plans are moving ahead for this year’s Fall Tour, scheduled for the weekend of October 25. We have secured a block of special rate rooms at The Green Park Inn in Blowing Rock, NC. Other details are in the works. Stay tuned.

Mike Jones reminded us of 2 post-Parade events of note. The next Auto Fair at Lowe’s Motor Speedway is scheduled for September 7 and this year’s Euro Festival at BMW in Greer, SC will be held October 17-19. Mike hopes for a large Porsche turnout for both events.

Our special guest for May was Keith Green of The Squeek Squad mobile auto detailing service. Keith is building his business and is seeking clients. If you would like to discuss your detailing needs with him, he can be reached at 803- 810-0320.

Well, that’s about it for now. If you are on the fence about attending Parade ’08, better decide soon as time is short! Don’t miss out on the club’s biggest annual event, being staged this year right in your own backyard! I hope to see you there and until then, keep your right foot down and the shiny side up!

Mike

June 2008 — Page 7 TRIAD AREA REPORT Jerry Kilcrease, Area Director

May 20- Forty seven members and guests attended the Triad Area’s meeting at Big Shotz Tavern in Clemmons. During the meeting, we were entertained by Ron Reed’s video display of photos taken at Spring Tour, the April 6 Autocross and other interesting shots. Tom- mie Lauer also shared photographs taken at this year’s Detroit Auto Show. Vic Harllee, Chairman of BookMarks’ Shine and Show sched- uled for September 13th, gave us an update on the event. Randi Weiss showed examples of the children’s tee shirts (sponsored by Art Weiss) that will be sold at Parade with all proceeds going to Victory Junction Gang. Sadie Kilcrease announced that the Carolinas Re- gion Goodie Store will be set up in the Hospitality Room in the Westin Hotel and invited all those attending to drop by the booth and buy something. After the business meeting and announcements, we vis- ited during and after dinner and then headed home.

I am sorry to report that Triad members Randy Semroska and Maria Lopez have moved to the great state of Texas. While we wish them the best in Texas, we hate to loose them as active members and good friends. However, they do plan to come back and join us at Parade 2008 in Charlotte.

PAST EVENTS: While the Triad Area did not have any local events scheduled recently, quite a few of our members attended the Carolinas Region Spring Tour on April 18th to 20th at Pipestem Resort in West Virginia. Triad members Randy Semroska and Maria Lo- pez, Vincent Bray and Becca Cook drove up separately while Dale and Jane Hew- itt, Ron and Tanya Reed, Charles and Emily Branch and Sadie and I decided to form a “Boxster Brigade” and caravan up to Pipestem on Friday afternoon. It was a great afternoon for a drive until we came out of the Big Walker Mountain tunnel on I- 77 in Bland County, Virginia and were greeted at the bottom of the hill by two Sheriff’s deputies operating a speed trap. There were five vehicles stopped, four Boxsters and one white Chevy pick up truck with Virginia plates. They issued tickets to all four of us Boxster drivers but were kind enough to let the pick up truck go free! In spite of the tickets, we all arrived at Pipestem Resort and really had a good weekend. Saturday, we had some great mountain roads to drive. We stopped and enjoyed a catered lunch. Afterward, we drove more scenic roads as we headed back to the Resort for dinner and dancing. There was a band playing after dinner for our enjoyment and a good time was had by all. Sunday morning we met for breakfast, said our goodbyes and headed back home. It was a fun time, a great location, and the Hickory Area director, Delmar Kiser, did an outstanding job planning the event. Porsche of Hickory was the Spring Tour sponsor and our thanks go out to them for their contributions to this event.

SECOND COURSE – SECOND OVERALL WIN OF THE SEASON FOR PENSKE PORSCHES; FLYING LIZARD PORSCHES TAKE ONE TWO IN GT2 IN UTAH

TOOELE, Utah – May 19 – After no one on the Penske Porsche Racing team thought that the Larry H. Miller Dealer- ships Utah Grand Prix presented by The Grand and Little America Hotels feature race could possibly match the excite- ment of qualifying the day before, a combination of flawless driving and incisive pit strategy gave the team’s Porsche RS Spyders a one- two overall win at Miller Motorsports Park. (France) and (Germany) took the lead for good with 35 minutes to go in the two- hour, 45- minute event after the leading deFarran/Pagenaud Acura had to pit for fuel and tires. The #7 Dumas/Bernhard Porsche had done its normal pit stop duties with a little more than an hour to go, and was poised for a non- stop finish.

The #6 Penske Porsche RS Spyder, with (Germany) and (USA) also made up a place in class when the Acura stopped, and move up two places overall to second when both LMP1 Audis had incidents on the course.

Patrick Pilet (France) and Johannes van Overbeek (USA), in the Team Lizard Porsche, finished second, moving up from fourth after the Farnbacher Loles Porsche of Werner/Basseng had to come in for fuel on the last lap and the Tafel Ferrari of Mueller/Farnbacher needed a late- race pit stop as well. The Farbacher Loles cars was later excluded from the points for having a fuel cell that was determined to be over the 90 liter capacity dictated by the rules.

Henzler/Bergmeister now lead Mueller/Farnbacher in the GT2 driver standings by one point, while the Flying Lizards lead Tafel by nine points and Porsche leads Ferrari in the manufacturers championship by six points. The next stop on the circuit is in Lime Rock, Connecticut, for the New England Grand Prix on Saturday, July 12.

Roger Penske congratulates Tim Bernhard for capturing the LMP2 pole; smiling Romain Dumas looks on.

June 2008 — Page 9 Triangle Area Report Martin Salas, Area Director

Anna Haley from the American Diabetes Association came to our monthly meeting to discuss their need for volunteers for their upcoming Tour de Cure (www.diabetes.org/tour) on June 7. They are looking for help on registration, breakfast station, traffic directors, on-route at a turn, and finish line. We were able to get a good number of volunteers but there are still some open positions. If anyone would like to share a couple of hours, please contact Martin Salas ([email protected]). The event will run from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Ms. Haley left some flyers and T-shirts for the group.

We also finalized our plans for the upcoming Tail of the Dragon III run on August 15 - 17. At this time we have a group of 10 cars but more can still join. Basically, we will drive to the ToD area on Friday with a stop in Asheville for dinner. Saturday morning will be several Dragon runs with Lunch in Gatlinburg, TN and going across the Smoky Mountains with a stop at Clingmans Dome. Saturday afternoon we will drive to Cherokee, NC and then to Mount Pisgah where we will spend the night. Sunday morning we will return back to the Triangle area. As in previous year, this event is spouse/ significant-other friendly.

Another item discussed was the location of our monthly meetings. Nadine Saville, our region’s membership chairman, has provided the number of members by county for the Triangle Area. There are 153 members in the Triangle Area of which 108 live in Durham, Orange, and Chattam Counties. Given that 70% of the members live in those counties, per- haps moving to a location closer to those counties will bring more participation to the monthly meetings. A survey will be sent to area members to determine if a new location, new weekday, and/or new hours would work. The plan is to have the July meeting in a new, more convenient location.

Finally, we discussed Porsche Parade 2008 items. Seems not many people from the Triangle Area have registered and most will be there only for a few days. The key message is with regards to tech. inspection of the car. Event registrants who will be participating in any of the driving events need to have the tech inspection done on Saturday (9AM - 5PM) or Sunday morning (7AM - 9AM).

Mountain Area Report Doug McKee, Area Director

Please stop the rain on Saturdays. Mountain Area drivers took a lunch cruise to the Pisgah Inn. It was fun and a little rainy. Scott Rasco showed up with his early Irish green 911. Dale McCourt led the drive through the mountains while yours truly attended the Carolinas Region Board meeting in Hickory.

Porschefest 2009 will be a 3-day Memorial Day weekend event in the Asheville area hosted by the Mountain Area. We need volunteers to host 120 Porsches and 200 participants. Get ready.

Those who want to attend only the Porsche Parade Concour can follow us to Charlotte at 5:00 AM on Sunday, June 29.

On June 7, we’ll meet at Deal. Prizes will be handed out. Please be there at 11:00 AM.

On July 5, the Mountain Area meeting will include a drive from Deal to Doug McKee’s lake house. Bring swimming attire, sunscreen and snacks to share. Children are welcome.

Back on the throttle. Doug Mckee

June 2008 — Page 10 Upstate Area Report Jim Horner, Area Director

Hello from the Upstate!

Despite some hail and bad weather, we had 28 people in attendance at our May meeting at the Italian Market and Grill. Thank you to all our members who are doing a great job at donating items for our monthly raffle. We’ve had posters, hats, Porsche logo items, some really cool books, and other things donated by our members. May’s raffle raised $105, and we’re up to a total of $590 for the year so far. Funds supplement club activities, and most is reserved for a charita- ble donation made at the holidays. It’s wonderful to be part of such an active, giving group.

On April 26, our club enjoyed a private tour of Penske’s 105-acre racing facility in Mooresville, north of Charlotte. About 25 of us met in Greenville – some starting with an all-important caffeine fix at Starbucks – and headed north from there. The facility, home to all of Penske’s racing teams, has almost half a million square feet of the latest and greatest in auto- motive technology – all of it spotless! We got a glimpse of how they build and repair cars, and really got a feel for the history and tradition of their organization. All of us who attended really appreciate Ken Padgett’s efforts, who worked for months setting this up. It was an amazing place!

Coming on Saturday, May 31, is the PCUALALSOESD, AKA Porsche Club Upstate Area Last Annual Late Spring Or Early Summer Drive. Andy Shoun is plotting a scenic drive along the curving mountain roads north of Greenville, end- ing with a BBQ lunch at the country home of Ken and Linda Padgett in Travelers Rest. All members of the Upstate Area and other areas are welcome. The drive leaves from ProTech at 9:00 a.m. and covers about 120 miles. Bring a digital camera and enjoy! For more information or to RSVP, email Andy at [email protected].

Be sure to mark your calendars for July 19 for the region-wide Party-of-the-Summer at Gene and Paula Kendrick’s home in Spartanburg. There will be a pool for swimming, a DJ for dancing, lots of space for car showing, BBQ for con- suming, cold beverages (adult and otherwise) for consuming, and after it’s done, stories for telling. Don’t miss it! See the full-page ad elsewhere in Tobacco Roads for more details.

In addition to all the other things to see and do at Porsche Parade in Charlotte, Sadie Kilcrease will be setting up the Carolina’s Region Goodie Store at the hospitality Suite at the Westin, opening on June 28. She’ll also be set up at Lowe’s Motor Speedway for the DE on July 4 and 5.

There’s a lot going on. In all the busy-ness, remember to find some time to get out there in your car and enjoy our beau- tiful Upstate countryside in the good ole’ summertime!

SUNFUN Area Report Rock Webb, Area Director

ATTENTION: Member meeting going back to the third Tuesday of the month! Our next meeting will be Tuesday, June 17 at Bower Grill (used to be Foxfire Grill) in Harbison on Bower PKY.

Don’t forget about Parade coming up in Charlotte starting June 28. Workers are needed so let me know if you would like to volunteer.

Suggestions for Porsche activities would be appreciated. Plans for a mountain drive are in the works.

This year’s One Lap of America made a stop at CMP for some track time. Dick Lane and I were there to witness the cars coming through. They had driven all night from NPR Raceway in Louisiana and were ready for some track time. This was on a Wednesday. They had started Sunday in South Bend Indiana and had been to Road America, Mid Amer- ica, Texas Speedway, NPR Raceway and had made it to CMP. A lot of miles and they had to make it back to South Bend via the BMW plant and VIR. About four thousand miles total!

Lots of cars and classes, everything from two GTP Cor- vette Replicas (Mongoose), a 46 Plymouth, with Chevy running gear, to a class winning Honda Odyssey and of course Porsches. Porsches did good with 996TTs taking 1st. 4th, 9th and a 911SC first in Vintage.

Columbian Jon Krolewicz of SCCA and Daytona 24 Hour fame was there, driving a Mongoose. His dad, Ray was the co driver and they had been up all night nursing the car to Columbia from NPR. They had been plagued with brake problems, gas leaks etc. When they finally got on the track at CMP the brakes locked up and Jon did some nice spins. However they pressed on and were able to finish the event.

Anyway, Dick and I will be looking for $2,500 dollars to cover next year’s entry fee. Anyone interested in sponsor- ing the Vintage Boys? 1st Overall—Mark DaVia & Drew Wikstrom Porsche 996 TT Rock
