Porsche Parade 2010 a Real “Trip” - by Chuck Hennings My First PCA Parade Is Over and I Have to Say It Was an Outstanding Experience THE CITRUS SPIEL THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE CITRUS REGION PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA Volume 36 - Number 8 August 2010 photo by Chuck Hennings Chuck by photo Porsche Parade 2010 A Real “Trip” - by Chuck Hennings My first PCA Parade is over and I have to say it was an outstanding experience. During one of the dinners I attended, they did a sur- vey of members about the number of Parades attended. All guests stood, then sat down as the number of years were announced. I believe the last man standing had attended all but 5 of the 55 Parades. And many others had attended twenty and thirty plus. One person had driven over 3000 miles from Alaska (and of course won the Long Distance Award)! As you can tell, these were the heart and soul, hard-core members who had dabbled in Porsches most of their lives. Coming to Parade for them (and now me) celebrated not only car memories and experiences but the chance to see old and new friends and share driving and social activities at the highest Club level. Inside This Issue I caravanned up to St. Charles. Illinois, site of the Parade, with David and Ginny O’Neal from Space Coast. They had the comfort of a Cayenne but I thought my 2003 Carrera 4S would do Porsche Parade Cover fine despite the length of the drive. Not only for the consuming heat, but my wife Rita, who foster care’s puppies for the Humane Society, has 4 of them co-habitating the air-conditioned garage with my Porsche! Her passion, my passion, side by side. The car is taking a rest after spending a couple of weeks on the road to the PCA Parade, held just outside of Chicago. It was a wonderful event but the ride tortuous (see article). I guess the spirit was willing, but the body………….. Next year’s Parade will be in Savannah and that’s only a 4-5 hour ride. Start thinking about going (July 31 – August 6) as it’s a great event for all things Porsche, cars and people. Our monthly meeting for July had to be canceled due to Emilio Cortes, our dealer liaison, having to be in New Orleans that day for training on the new Cayenne. The main topic would have been our upcoming Driver’s Education Event October 16 and 17 which is filling quickly. Bert Del Villano and Ross Evers have put together another Roebling Road track event you don’t want to miss. Sign up at http://www.clubregistration.net. On August 14th, Vern Knoll has arranged a tour and lunch at Ultimate Motor Works and on September 26th our next Autocross is planned. Also in September, the Nominating Committee for 2011 Officers will be formed to present a slate in October for a membership vote in No- vember. If you have a desire to serve as an Officer or in any capacity, please email me at [email protected]. Finally, if you’re new to the Club, come to the next meeting at the Porsche dealership in Maitland at 7pm on August 2nd and meet folks who share your passion for a great automobile. Attendees include 911ers, Boxster, Cayman, Cayenne, 944, 928 etc. owners who will gladly assist in any questions you may have about your vintage, used or new Porsche. • Porsche 919 Hybrid English.Indd
Porsche 919 Hybrid Return to top-level sport Porsche is making its comeback to the top-level motorsport arena: with the new 919 Hybrid the sports car brand is sending a platform for pioneering technology to the top category of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) with the undisputed seasonal highlight of the 24-hour Le Mans race. Porsche's reputation precedes it at this venue: with 16 overall victories under its belt, the brand holds the record for this, the most famous endurance race in the world. In 2014 Porsche is returning to the top-level class endurance race after a 16-year absence - namely Le Mans Prototypes (LMP1). Matthias Müller, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG explains: "The new and revolutionary efficiency regulations for this class were what prompted us to take this step. In 2014 it is not going to be the fastest contender who is going to win the sports car world championship and Le Mans, but the car that gets furthest with the defined amount of energy. And it is precisely this challenge that the automotive industry has to face. The 919 Hybrid is like a high speed research laboratory and the most complex racing car Porsche has ever built." The new WEC regulations for the LMP1 racing car gives engineers an unusual amount of leeway and demands pioneering technology, such as hybridisation, downsizing engines and consistent lightweight construction. This is all particularly relevant for the development of future generations of factory-spec sports cars. Maximum sporting performance and highest efficiency are at the heart of "Porsche Intelligent Performance".

Boosted by two overall victories on the street circuits in St Petersburg and Long Beach, the Audi Sport North America team comes as championship leaders to Salt Lake City, Utah, where Audi’s diesel sportscar has already played a leading roll twice. Emanuele Pirro in particular made the headlines in the previous two years. In 2006, the Italian kept Lucas Luhr, at that time sill at the wheel of a lighter LM P2 Porsche, at bay during the dramatic closing stages and crossed the finish line as winner by a mere 0.318 seconds. Pirro managed quite probably the most spectacular start of the year at Miller Motorsports Park in 2007: Starting in eighth position with the Audi R10 TDI, he stormed into the lead before the first corner after overtaking every competitor, who had started in front of him, on the long start-finish straight. The sensational manoeuvre was viewed frequently on many Internet based video portals afterwards. It was yet another impressive demonstration of the performance of Audi TDI Technology, which is long since established in Europe and is also launched on the American market at the end of 2008.
