The Paramount Ranch is an old movie set location located near Agoura in the Santa Monica Mountains. After passing through several private hands, it now a part of the National Park Service Santa Monica Mountain Recreational Area. http://www.nps.gov/samo/planyourvisit/paramountranch.htm

We will meet on Coastline Drive in Malibu, Coastline is 3/4 of a mile north of Sunset Blvd on Pacific Coast Highway. Make the right on Coastview and pull off the road just past the first street on the right, Surfview. We will depart at 10:00 am sharp, we will take a fun drive through the Santa Monica Mountains enroute to the Ranch, There is a nice covered area where we will enjoy our picnic lunches.

The 2 mile road course was only operated for two years, 1956-57. It was narrow and twisting with ups and downs. It was perfect for Porsches! Some portions of the track can still be found, and we will have the opportunity to walk parts of it.. Marty Goldsmith, who organized this tour, worked at all five of the race weekends held there. Marty will give us a tour and history lesson about the track and as it was at that time. We will try to pick our way around the course on foot, trying to identify some of its outstanding features (including an underpass/tunnel).

11 AThe 1963 Circuit Porsche 356B T-6 With a Story to Tell by Dal B. Lee, proud 2nd owner of S/N 211496

It was in the fall of 1980 when I saw S/N 211496, a 1963 Porsche 356B T-6, for the first time in a cold garage in Denver. It was my freshman year and I had become friends with a family whose father, Mr. Berry, was the current and original owner. While appreciating the then current 911SC, 928, 924 (there is also a 911SC story), I was building a 1971 Plymouth Muscle Car for my upcoming 16th birthday. Mr. Berry told me stories about purchasing the car from Vasek Polak, about driving up the California Coast (which seemed like a world away from the wintery Colorado life I had only known). But, most of all, he told me that lots of horse power does not make a car fast or great. This is where I learned the Law of Conservation of Momentum: "If you do not slow down, you do not need to speed up". 1971 Plymouth Sebring Satellite with 383 ci big block Mopar At this pre-legal driving age, I thought that Porsches were cars for attorneys, doctors, and successful businessmen. I grew up with Midgets, Sprint Cars, and Dragsters, so I was classically trained to think that more horse power was better. I admired Porsches and loved the lifestyle they promoted and new that some day, if I worked hard enough, I would own one. But, my current challenge was to have the fastest car in high school. My father had purchased a 1971 Plymouth Sebring Satellite (Road Runner with power windows) and was planning to give it to me when I turned sixteen, so I started the high performance build of the engine and transmission. I frequently visited the Berry family and reported progress of my project. They always greeted my report with a smile, along with a 356 story to balance the conversation. Even after I was driving the Plymouth regularly (when it was not broken down), he kept 356 stories coming, especially about reliability. Over time I started to really appreciate the small, light and nimble cars that had done so Here's the 356 as she came off the blocks, drug up onto my trailer and well in competitive sports car racing. brought home for the first time

12 MarchMarch 20092009

Over the years I stayed in touch with Mr. Berry. They had moved back to California and I had moved out to California to finish college and work in aerospace. In 1986 the car was put on blocks with family plans to restore the car, but the car continued to lie in state. I finally came to a point in my life where I could afford a hobby car and purchased a Beck 550 Spyder in 1999. Six months later Dick Berry gave me the call I had been waiting for all these years: "the family has thought it over and we would like you to have the 356, do you want to buy it?" My heart stopped! I had just bought the Spyder but was not about to let this opportunity go by. The next full breath I was able to take expelled the answer "Yes, I want the car!!!"

Fuel tank - before and after It was Summer, 2000, and the car had been on blocks since 1986. The list of work needed was quite long, but I had the car in my garage finally, and lots of time to get it back on the road. The brake fluid had solidified and eroded the master cylinder reservoir, the fuel in the tank, fuel lines, and carburetors had turned to molasses, the tires were cracked and flat, and the electrical system and chrome parts were severely corroded. I went over to pick up the car with a trailer only to find that all four wheels were seized and I literally had to drag the car onto the trailer with a winch. Over the next few years I worked on subsystem by subsystem. In June of 2005 she was finally ready to start and drive around the neighborhood. She fired right up and ran wonderfully. With a couple of fine adjustments of the carburetors and the timing, I was off down the street with the biggest smile on my face! After 19 years of storage, S/N 211496 came back to life.

I was a little concerned because the engine and gear box had only had the fluids changed. After a few trips around the Palos Verdes Peninsula, I had the great joy that year to partake in the Driving Tour with the Dana Point 356 Concours and had the car shown on the lawn at Lantern Bay Park with hundreds of other fabulous 356s. I sent the Berry's photos of their car participating in a great event for the first time in 19 years.

The next stage in reliability confidence building was to drive to the North Meets South event for the 356 Registry, held in Solvang in 2007. My son, Spencer, and I headed out. Again, the car ran splendidly without issue and we truly enjoyed the After sitting on blocks for 19 years, all we did to the engine and transaxle event. Spencer, at the ripe young age of 2 1/2, was now able to appreciate the was change fluids drive, the cars, and the people. This was the first automobile event that Spencer and I went too and truly enjoyed together. I could see the sparkle of automobiles , specifically Porsche's, becoming a twinkle in his eye.

It was now time to consider my ultimate goal with S/N 211496. I travel to the Monterey Historic Races each year with a group of friends so, on August 16, 2007, I headed to Monterey with my usual caravan of Autophiles. On the way home after that weekend, I experienced a spiritual event on Highway 1 near Big Sur. It was here, while stopping to take a photo of the car, that all the stories Dick Berry had told me of driving up the coast with his wife hit me. Dick had lost his wife several years ago, but the peacefulness of the car with the ocean in the background brought images into my mind of the two of them stopping to enjoy the very same view many years before. It was very difficult to get back in the car and drive away Brake drum tank - before and after from this scenic point. It just seemed natural for the car to be there.

The most recent surprise in this ever evolving story occurred in 2008 at the Queen Mary Concours in Long Beach. I brought her to the Grand Prix Region's Concours d’Elegance. My old girl won the People’s Choice award given to the crowds favorite car! Some say it was a ploy to get me to be the next Concours Chair for GPX, but I think this car is special and the individuals who came to the event last year and voted for her could see that as well. It was great fun to get Dick on the phone yet again and tell him that his car won that award and that his pride and joy was still performing well.

1133 The Circuit

Today, the car gets her legs stretched for the occasional PCA breakfast or jaunt around the Peninsula with Spencer. Little tidbits are cared for when possible to make progress on the cosmetic work that still remains on the car. Pennies are being saved for the day when the paint, chrome, and interior can be put back to its original glory. Until then, keep an eye out for a flat silver 1963 Porsche 356B T-6 with a Simpson car seat in the passenger seat with a toe headed boy and his dad enjoying the simple pleasures these simple cars can bring.

Stay tuned as the story of S/N 211496 will continue on!!!

After our February 7th Breakfast Club February, The morning rains cleared and GPX hosted a Tech Session by Tony Callas (Callas Rennsport) viewing a film made when he was chief mechanic for Porsche at the Le Mans 24 hours race in 1998.

In searching for a location to view this film for the seventy people that RSVP'd, Jeff Haas (a well known GPX member) offered his Home Theatre system at his business location (Haas Entertainment in Culver City) for viewing the film. And, of course, Jeff Haas with Brita Goldsmith and Hazel Hofsess. Roy Lock and Marty Goldsmith are on the right to add to this first class operation, Wayne Dempsey of Pelican Parts sponsored food and refreshments to make this a very successful event.

With the great response, two showings were scheduled. Tony did a live narration of the film depicting his experience as an American hired to lead a German team supporting the Porsche GT1 at this, the granddaddy of endurance racing. Being a skier as well as an auto enthusiast, this reminded me of the annual event that Warren Miller puts on with his famous ski films.

Even though the Le Mans race is such a well known, prestigious event, Tony was able to give us the non-glamorous first hand story that the Speed Channel would never broadcast. The life of a crew keeping these cars “flying” is hard work and very tiring. And, of course, being an American leading a foreign team had its challenges also.

When not in the theater, people had a chance to socialize and tour the Haas Entertainment shop. In the garage area were New member Scott Bielski, his fiance, Megan, vehicles being installed with impressive audio, video, satellite, and Reggie Garmon security, and tracking systems. In the office area was a demo of a new tracking system created by Haas that does more than just add security to your vehicle. It can track your vehicle, let you know how fast it’s going, disable the vehicle, send text messages if your kids are driving faster than you'd like (and you're no whee in sight)... all of this remotely.

Of course if you want home theatre installation, Jeff’s business will meet your needs. Haas Entertainment is up to date on technology, customer focused, and delivers quality work.

This was a fun event. Many thanks go out to Tony Callas and Tom Prine of Callas Rennsport, Jeff Haas and the crew from Haas Entertainment, and Wayne Dempsey of Pelican Parts. All are regular advertisers in The Circuit, GPX members, and enthusiasts of the Porsche community. Their businesses support us as Nick Perdikaris and De Jur enjoying a sandwich Porsche owners; one of the benefits of being a PCA member. provided by Pelican Parts

19 Featured Advertiser of the Month: SWB Studios

SWB Studios was founded in 1991, shortly after my retirement from the Cali- Steve and Caprice Foster fornia Highway Patrol. I enjoyed a 10 year career in law enforcement and was with '68 Ferrari GTC, Carrera, '67 Vette one of the first to drive a Mustang on patrol. I had always been interested in art and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Long Beach State. Although I had been producing artwork for many years, I decided to offer services to a larger group of enthusiasts and started SWB. The initials, SWB, stand for “Short Wheel Base”. I own a 1967 911 and am a huge fan of the Ferrari SWB, it was a good match.

I met Caprice in grad school and she has been assisting with running SWB ever since. After 17 years together, we were married last year — didn’t want to rush things!

I’ve always been interested in high performance auto- mobiles. I still own my first car, a 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner. I started drag racing at Irwindale (the real one) and Orange County Raceway. That Road Runner also engaged in its share of street racing and I remember running it at Big Willie's drag strip at Termi- nal Island many years ago. I was soon introduced to , and found myself at the legendary Riverside International Raceway, running laps in everything from Shelbys to Trans Ams. When Riverside closed, I did some dirt track racing at Ascot Raceway. I’d never really had any interest in Porsches and actually rooted for the Green- wood Corvettes to beat the pesky 911s of Peter Gregg (I know, blasphemy)!

My exposure to Porsches came about as a result of my neighbor. He raced a Signal Orange 914-6 in SCCA events. It was a neat car and sounded great when he’d wind it out during testing. I soon bought a wonderful little 1967 911. I did some minor modifications and began vintage racing. It saw action in VARA events and twice won the 2.0 liter category at the La Carrera Classic. I still own that 911 and will never sell it.

We've had a number of Porsches over the years, including: 944s, Turbos, 914s and 911s. Caprice also shares my love of Porsche, and currently owns a hotrod '78 911SC and a beautiful white '84 Carrera. We are also involved with mountain biking. When I’m not tinkering with one of the cars or working on a painting, I can be found riding my bike.

I began my association with the Grand Prix Region after meeting Ed and Melanie Osborne. My first event was a fun run up Angeles Crest Highway. I was piloting a 2.8 powered ’73 911S and had a great dice with Richard Armstrong in his new 911. He was very gracious about all the new stone chips caused by my sticky tires. Caprice and I have met many wonderful people in PCA and have been fortunate to create artwork for quite a few. I enjoy painting detailed, accurate representations of a customer’s special automobile and limited edition prints of legendary sports cars. Our paintings hang in the collections of automotive icons like Bondurant, Edlebrock, Shelby, Tony Adamowicz and many others. Active in the Porsche, Ferrari and Shelby clubs, we have painted portraits of many members’ cars, more often than not, commissioned by a spouse as a special gift. An enthusiast recently commissioned us to paint a series of very large portraits of legendary classic automobiles, which are displayed in his custom built, 15,000 sq. ft. underground Garage Mahal that would do Jay Leno proud.

In addition to artwork, we also offer custom T-shirts, jackets, polos and other automo- tive apparel. When a customer commissions a painting of their car, we also offer the option of printing the design on shirts. These have proven to be popular gifts for family and crew. We are always willing to work with the customer to help them realize their vision. Give us a call anytime or visit us on the web at swbstudios.com.

We can also be found every year at the Monterey Historics, and are looking forward to Porsche being the featured marque this year. Stop by-and don’t forget to ask for the “GPX” discount.

21 The Circuit Book Review for Porschephiles: Race to Win by Bruce Herrington, San Gabriel Valley Region

Race to Win: How to Become a Complete Champion Driver, by Derek Daly.

Many will recognize the author’s name from his years of motorsports broadcasting. Others will know that he got into broadcasting after years as a driver in World Sports Cars, Indy cars and . Never a champion at the highest levels (though he has lead Formula One events and finished as high as third in Indy Car events), he won many championships in a variety of cars, in the lower formulae.

Derek Daly’s years as a driver, followed by years as a careful, inside observer, have given him unique qualifications for writing a text book for a racing driver. "The frame of reference and expertise needed to clearly articulate the required ingredients to succeed as a racing driver" as Mario Andretti says in his forward. Mario also says that "I was particularly impressed with his Champion’s Pyramid, Bruce Herrington which has six qualities that a driver needs to possess (and balance) to succeed."

More pertinent for the casual reader is the observation that "I think the most fascinating aspect of the book is the number of anecdotes that Derek uses... Real drivers and countless scenarios to make his points..."

Though intended to be a guide book for achieving a successful racing career, for the dedicated Formula 1, NASCAR or Indy/CART spectator, this book is indispensable for the gossip it provides about the top drivers, their personalities and how they got to where they are. One anecdote of particular interest to this reviewer was of the author’s very first Indy Car drive, which happened in a car owned by Zone 8's Herb & Rose Wysard.

This book is not another of that genre that tells you how to take corners faster. Instead, it is directed on how to have a more successful career as a racer, professional or amateur. Derek discusses the often overlooked importance to a driver of good social skills, with a number of very interesting examples from his own life (Cue the Beatles "A little help from my friends"). His level of detail is such that he discusses the differences in optimum race team organization, depending on the style different drivers use to go fast.

Most readers of this review will probably not have aspirations of becoming a race winner, but the book is still a good read for the insight it provides into success in any endeavor. The concept of The Champion’s Pyramid, well articulated in this book, is universal. The six ingredients necessary to success are as necessary for a politician, CEO, manager, musician, salesman, or athlete.

Good as it is at fulfilling the promise of the sub-title, this book is appealing for two other, separate audiences – the motorsports spectator, and the careerist interested in personal development as a champion in any chosen field. This book is available in bookstores or through http://www.motorbooks.com.

BROTHER, CAN YOU SPARE . . . by Norma Ann Dawson (with sidekick Suesan Way)

As you may recall, Heifer International partners with ASUDEC, the organization Grand Prix Region selected to benefit from its fund rais- ing efforts for the next few years. This past holiday season, I was pleasantly surprised to receive an e-mail confirmation from my sister, brother-in-law, and niece in Texas advising that they had contributed a flock of geese in my honor through Heifer International’s program. How, I thought, could such a seemingly insignificant contribution make any kind of difference in a country like Burkina Faso with nearly 14 million people living in extreme poverty? Let’s consider a few of ASUDEC’s success stories.

In Gampéla, Ouagadougou, because of the financial security and in- frastructure ASUDEC is helping build; parents are able to meet the school needs for their children.

Mathias, who works in the city of Ouagadougou, was able to buy a bicycle and travel every day to his night guard job as a result of his ASUDEC project.

In Bamako, Southwest, Domonguilété was able to build a boutique and buy a bicycle and a second hand motorcycle with the money he earned from his initial ten chickens. The Bohouté family built a new house with the money they earned from their initial chicken project in Ba- mako, Southwest.

Ten chickens has brought sheep, cows, oxen and surplus food crop production into the families of Moutori, Southwest.

Lemanami, a widow in another Burkina Faso rural community, found hope in her project. Starting with chickens, she progressed to goats, and was able to strengthen her financial security.

Though our lives may seem worlds apart from the people of Burkina Faso, we do share the same planet. By supporting ASUDEC, you can help to lift someone out of poverty and help the planet at the same time by making a microloan to an entrepreneur who’s committed to sustainable farming or another environmentally sound pursuit.

Join us in our efforts to help make ASUDEC’s slogans a reality for everyone. “Stop striving for food to work for money!” “Abandon sub- sistence mentality for full emancipation!” “Pass on the Gift!”
