Baroque-Classical Contents A few highlights 1 Background stories 1 Baroque-Classical – Title order 2 Baroque-Classical – Composer order 9 Baroque-Classical – Pianist order 17 The 200 MIDI files in this group are of works mainly from the Baroque and Classical eras, but also include large works from the 19th century, such as Sonatas and Symphonies. Earliest recordings are from 1905. Composers include J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Handel, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Schubert and Schumann. Pianists include Wilhelm Backhaus, Harold Bauer, Ferruccio Busoni, Teresa Carreño, Eugen d’Albert, Fanny Davies, Walter Gieseking, Josef Hofmann, Frederic Lamond, Wanda Landowska, Josef Lhévinne, Vladimir de Pachmann, Raoul Pugno, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Artur Schnabel. A few highlights Impromptu Op.142 No.4 F minor by Schubert, played by 19-year old Claudio Arrau Chaconne by Busoni (from Bach violin concerto) played by Ferruccio Busoni Toccata and Fugue in D minor by J.S. Harold Bauer (1873-1951) started his musical career as a violinist, first appearing as a pianist in London at age 19. He pointed out in an interview that he needed to find a “means of making my [piano] playing acceptable without spending probably years acquiring mechanical proficiency.” He says that he “never studied technique independently of music.” Bauer is especially associated with the works of Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms. 2. Ferruccio Busoni (1866-1924) recorded his monumental Chaconne in London for the Duo-Art reproducing piano. The recording was issued in 1925, the only recording Busoni made of this signature work. Because the Duo-Art system has an 80-note compass, Busoni altered some passages to suit the limited compass. In this MIDI file, the missing bottom A notes have been restored, all other changes made by Busoni are retained. 3. Teresa Carreño (1853-1917) performed at age 10 for Abraham Lincoln at the White House. She is described as a “large women with a large hand, and playing like a man.” She toured extensively, including a tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1907. The Launceston Examiner reports that “she captivates even those who make it a rule to admire nothing.” She only recorded on piano roll, making some 22 recordings. She was married to piano roll artist Eugen d’Albert (1864-1932) for about three years in the 1890s. 4. Theodor Leschetizky (1830-1915) is best known as a piano teacher with a fame matched only by Liszt. His pupils included Paderewski, Friedman and many other pianists who recorded on piano roll. He wrote a number of works that though now forgotten, were popular in their day, with various piano roll artists recording some of these works (several of which are in other parts of this library). Leschetizky did not record on gramophone, instead he recorded 12 works for the Welte-Mignon reproducing piano during March 1906, eight of which were his own compositions. His recording of Mozart’s Fantasia No.4 is his only recording of works by this composer. 1 Contents page Baroque-Classical – Title order Composer order Pianist order Baroque-Classical – Title order Issue/ Title Composer Pianist Roll No. time midi file name rec date Abegg Variations Op.1 Schumann Petri 525 1905 6:32 Abegg Variations, Petri RW Air from Toccata "The Cat's Scarlatti, A.
