Mycosphere 5(4), 531−540, Doi 10.5943/mycosphere/5/4/5 Abstract Seventy exsiccates of the genus Cyathus deposited in JPB, UESC, URM and UFRN herbaria were studied and nine species were identified: Cyathus badius, C. berkeleyanus, C. earlei, C. gracilis, C. limbatus, C. pallidus, C. poeppigii, C. setosus and C. striatus. Cyathus berkeleyanus and C. poeppigii are recorded for the first time for northeastern Brazil. Descriptions, taxonomic remarks and illustrations of the studied material are presented. ABSTRACT — Sampling and analysis of gasteroid agaricomycete species ( Phallomycetidae and Agaricomycetidae ) associated with relicts of native Espinal forests in the southeast region of Córdoba, Argentina, have identified twenty-nine species in fourteen genera: Bovista (4), Calvatia (2), Cyathus (1), Disciseda (4), Geastrum (7), Itajahya (1), Lycoperdon (2), Lysurus (2), Morganella (1), Mycenastrum (1), Myriostoma (1), Sphaerobolus (1), Tulostoma (1), and Vascellum (1). The gasteroid species from the sampled Espinal forests showed an overall similarity with those recorded from neighboring phytogeographic regions; however, a new species of Lysurus was found and is briefly described, and Bovista coprophila is a new record for Argentina. A Horticulture Information article from the Wisconsin Master Gardener website, posted 19 Sept 2014 Fluted Bird’s Nest Fungus, Cyathus striatus There are many fungi in several genera called bird’s nest fungi because of the resemblance of their fruiting bodies to a tiny nest fi lled with eggs. One of the most common in Wisconsin is Cyathus striatus, the fl uted bird’s nest fungus. This species is widespread throughout temperate regions of the world, developing on dead wood in open forests, typically growing individually or in clusters on small twigs and fallen branches or other wood debris. Because it also grows readily in bark or wood mulch, it is frequently found in landscaped yards and gardens. Other species grow on plant remains or cow or horse dung. It is characterised by a slightly flared moderate to large peridium, yellowish interior peridium-wall, numerous brown-coloured peridioles with irregularly wrinkled surfaces, large broadly ellipsoid to elongate basidiospores, and a six-layered (in cross- section) peridium. A detailed description is supported by macro- and micromorphological illustrations, and the relation with similar and related taxa is discussed. Key words — Basidiomycota, macrofungi, Agaricaceae, Agaricales, taxonomy Introduction Bird’s nest fungi, previously placed in a separate family Nidulariaceae, were recently moved to the Agaricaceae (Kirk et al. 2008). Currently, they are represented in India by three genera with 17 species (14 Cyathus spp., Nidula emodensis, N. candida, and one Crucibulum sp.; Das & Zhao 2012). FUNGI FROM THE OWYHEE REGION OF SOUTHERN IDAHO AND EASTERN OREGON bY Marcia C. Wicklow-Howard and Julie Kaltenecker Boise State University Boise, Idaho Prepared for: Eastside Ecosystem Management Project October 1994 THE OWYHEE REGION The Owyhee Region is south of the Snake River and covers Owyhee County, Idaho, Malheur County, Oregon, and a part of northern Nevada. It extends approximately from 115” to 118” West longitude and is bounded by parallels 41” to 44”. Owyhee County includes 7,662 square miles, Malheur County has 9,861 square miles, and the part of northern Nevada which is in the Owyhee River watershed is about 2,900 square miles. The elevations in the region range from about 660 m in the Snake River Plains and adjoining Owyhee Uplands to 2522 m at Hayden Peak in the Owyhee Mountains. Where the Snake River Plain area is mostly sediment-covered basalt, the area south of the Snake River known as the Owyhee Uplands, includes rolling hills, sharply dissected by basaltic plateaus. The Owyhee Mountains have a complex geology, with steep slopes of both basalt and granite. In the northern areas of the Owyhee Mountains, the steep hills, mountains, and escarpments consist of basalt. In other areas of the mountains the steep slopes are of granitic or rhyolitic origin. The mountains are surrounded by broad expanses of sagebrush covered plateaus. The soils of the Snake River Plains are generally non-calcareous and alkaline. Most are well-drained, with common soil textures of silt loam, loam and fine sand loam. In the Uplands and Mountains, the soils are often coarse textured on the surface, while the subsoils are loamy and non-calcareous. -

SMALL MOLECULE GROWTH INHIBITORS FROM Albatrellus flettii AND Sarcodon scabripes NATIVE TO BRITISH COLUMBIA by Almas Yaqoob Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm-D), Hamdard University, Pakistan, 2012 THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE IN BIOCHEMISTRY UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN BRITISH COLUMBIA April 2019 © Almas Yaqoob, 2019 Abstract The first part of this thesis investigated the growth-inhibitory and immunomodulatory potential of six wild Canadian mushrooms. Out of 24 crude extracts, six showed strong growth- inhibitory activity, two exhibited strong immuno-stimulatory activity and nine demonstrated potent anti-inflammatory activity. The second part of this thesis involved purification and characterization of growth- inhibitory compounds from Albatrellus flettii. Liquid-liquid extraction, Sephadex LH-20 and HPLC-Mass Spectrometry (HPLC-MS) were used to purify the three compounds of interest. NMR analyses confirmed their identity as grifolin, neogrifolin and confluentin. Grifolin and neogrifolin inhibited IMP1-KRas RNA interaction as demonstrated using an in-vitro fluorescent polarization assay. The three compounds suppressed KRas expression in SW480 and HT-29 human colon cancer cells. Confluentin, shown for the first time, to induce apoptosis and arrest cell cycle in SW480 cells. The third part of this thesis involved the development of methods to purify growth-inhibitory compounds from Sarcodon scabripes.
