Turkish literature (Turkish: Türk edebiyatı or Türk yazını) comprises both oral compositions and written texts in the Turkish language, either in its Ottoman form or in less exclusively literary forms, such as that spoken in the Republic of Turkey today. The Ottoman Turkish language, which forms the basis of much of the written corpus, was influenced by Persian and Arabic and used the Ottoman Turkish alphabet. The history of the broader Turkic literature spans a period of nearly 1,300 years. The oldest extant records of written Turkic are the Orhon inscriptions, found in the Orhon River valley in central Mongolia and dating to the 7th century. Subsequent to this period, between the 9th and 11th centuries, there arose among the nomadic Turkic peoples of Central Asia a tradition of oral epics, such as the Book of Dede Korkut of the Oghuz Turks—the linguistic and cultural ancestors of the modern Turkish people—and the Manas epic of the Kyrgyz people. Beginning with the victory of the Seljuks at the Battle of Manzikert in the late 11th century, the Oghuz Turks began to settle in Anatolia, and in addition to the earlier oral traditions there arose a written literary tradition issuing largely—in terms of themes, genres, and styles— from Arabic and Persian literature. -

Central Asia's New Dastans

Give me a chance, my rebellious dreams My father has erected his statue in my memory May years and winds be rendered powerless May his legacy not be erased from my conscience Give me a chance, my rebellious dreams Grant my father a holy DASTAN May years and winds be rendered powerless May his remembrance never be allowed to fade (Muhbir, November 1982 [Tashkent]) The dastan is ornate oral history and an important part of the Turkic literature of Central Asia. Traditionally, dastans have been repositories of ethnic identity and history, and some constitute nearly complete value systems for the peoples they embrace. The primary, or "mother," dastans are those composed to commemorate specific liberation struggles. [1] Set mostly in verse by an ozan, [2] more than 50 mother dastans are recited by Central Asians from the Eastern Altai to the Western Ural Mountains and as far south as Bend-e Turkestan in Afghanistan. Most dastans commemorate the struggles of different Turkic peoples against external aggressors, such as the Kalmuks and Chinese. The central figure of the dastan is the alp, [3] who leads his people against the enemy, be they from afar or from within his own tribe. The alp endures many trials and tribulations, which ultimately are shared by a supporting cast. His problems are nearly always aggravated by one or more traitors, who although a problem for the alp, can never stop his ineluctable progress toward victory. His success is celebrated by a toy, or lavish feast. -

Bonnell Summer 2015 Abstract Making Ivan-Uzbek: War, Friendship of the Peoples, and the Creation of Soviet Uzbekistan, 1941-1945 by Charles David Shaw Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor Yuri Slezkine, Chair This dissertation addresses the impact of World War II on Uzbek society and contends that the war era should be seen as seen as equally transformative to the tumultuous 1920s and 1930s for Soviet Central Asia. It argues that via the processes of military service, labor mobilization, and the evacuation of Soviet elites and common citizens that Uzbeks joined the broader “Soviet people” or sovetskii narod and overcame the prejudices of being “formerly backward” in Marxist ideology. The dissertation argues that the army was a flexible institution that both catered to national cultural (including Islamic ritual) and linguistic difference but also offered avenues for assimilation to become Ivan-Uzbeks, part of a Russian-speaking, pan-Soviet community of victors. Yet as the war wound down the reemergence of tradition and violence against women made clear the limits of this integration. The dissertation contends that the war shaped the contours of Central Asian society that endured through 1991 and created the basis for thinking of the “Soviet people” as a nation in the 1950s and 1960s. -

Using the example of such works as the heroic epos "Manas", "Kitaby Dede Korkut" of Oguzes, as well as the poems of "Kissa-i Yusuf" by Kul Gali, the works of Turkmen writers Berdy Kerbabaev, Makhtumkuli, Zahir Bigiyev, Shakir Muhammadov, the literary and cultural interrelations of the Turkic peoples are revealed. The Turkmen poet Makhtumkuli is among them. There is information about the distribution of his works among the Tatars in manuscripts, some works were published in pre-revolutionary Tatar publications. The article deals with the history of creation, study, analysis and publication of the poems by Makhtumkuli in Tatar and Turkmen languages. A STUDY OF KOROGLU DESTANI MAHMUT ORTA FRANKFURT AM MAIN- 2012 1 A STUDY OF KOROGLU DESTANI Mahmut ORTA Just like in all of the world literatures, the first examples of the Turkish Literatures were the epics. The term of "destan" (epic) was and has been used for several verse genres and types within the Turkish literary traditions. What is the epic? •The epics that are the offset works of all the world literatures are the long stories written in verse style.We xan give some of the epics examples. Some Of Turkısh Myths And Legends: • Köroğlu Myth • Kız Kulesi (Maiden’s Tower) Myth • Dede Korkut • Nasreddın Hodja, etc. Now we can see the epic’s story: THE STORY OF KOROGLU The Story Of Koroglu is one of the most widespread of the Turkic destans1 It is shared not only by nearly all Turkic peoples, but also by some non-Turkic neighboring communities, such as the Armenians, Georgians, Kurds, Tajiks, and Afghans. There are, of course, differences among these many versions, but in general they can be separated into two major groups, the western and the eastern, with the Caspian Sea as a rough boundary between them. Both groups of versions have ties, whether geographical or cultural, to Persia. Although the destan’s path of transmission is not yet fully understood, most researchers agree that it originated in the south Caucasus region, most likely Azerbaijan, and traveled eastward from there (also slightly westward, into Anatolia and the Balkans, but it is the eastward movement that concerns us more here)2.
