Identifying Your Car 75 Model Years A model year does not necessarily coincide with the year in which the car was built. For example, it may be seen from the following chart that while a car built in January 1972 is indeed a 1972 model year car, another one built in August of that year is a 1973 model year car. There are several different reasons for this. One reason is that it is easier to bring in changes in a model's specification when production has been halted already for a holiday shut down. Another reason is that motor shows usually took place in the Autumn and Winter, displaying the following year's new or updated models. He builds up Standard VIN numbers replaced commission numbers in October 1979, commencing at VIN000001 with an 8 digit prefix. Triumph by purchasing smaller concerns to enable him to produce complete cars with little outside help. The Herald is first new car, followed by the Spitfire project. Autumn 1960: Cash crisis forces TFADW1AT = manual, RHD TFADW2AT = manual, LHD, Europe the Spitfire development plan to be shelved. August 1961: Leyland Motors purchase Standard TFADW5AT = manual, overdrive, RHD TFADW6AT = manual, overdrive, LHD, Europe Triumph, Stanley Markland becomes MD. He discovers Spitfire prototype under a dust cover by accident and demands it be put into production. A Brief History of the Triumph Spitfire Development Spitfire 4 - October 1962 to December 1964 1951 Standard Eight introduced incorporating newly developed 803cc ‘SC’ (small car) engine. FC1 to FC44656 October 1962 Earls Court Motor Show. Spitfire ‘4’ announced, competing against the BMC Sprites 1957 and Midgets. The car is an instant success, and outsells the ‘Spridgets’ in every year of production Triumph Herald (code name Zobo) begins to develop under the guidance of Alick Dick, Harry bar one (due to a strike in 1969). Webster (chief designer) and Martin Tustin (General Manager). Original design concept The number ‘4’ denotes the number of cylinders. The Vitesse has already gone on sale in the USA incorporated a monocoque body shell. Eventually the realities of financial constraint led them to as the Sports 6 and so the Spitfire 4 follows suit to fit in with the prevailing marketing strategy - use a chassis and separate body shell. -

INLET MANIFOLDS 34 Performance & TUNING Ram Pipes (Single Choke) 01 04 Piper Ram Pipes Not only do these Ram pipes improve air flow into the carburettor by reducing turbulence - thanks to their full radiused mouths, they also look good. Our ram pipes for single choke carburettors are 50mm deep, they can be used on their own, with the Piper air socks, or with suitable sports air filters, depending on installation, providing there is sufficient clearance from the end of the ram pipe to the sports filter case. Ram Pipes (Twin Choke) 02 Carburettor Cap 08 Twin choke application ram pipes are 30mm deep, they can be used on their own or with Piper air socks. All ram pipes are sold individually. If unsure as to fitment please contact your local Moss branch. Please see notes; Important Descriptions and Dimensions on page 18. Ram Pipes For Single Choke Carburettors. Can also be used with Piper Air Socks or suitable sports air filters. For 11/4” Carburettors; Polished SFR230 Anodised - Red SFR230R SU HS4 Jet Conversion Kit Anodised - Blue SFR230B For 11/2” Carburettors; Replaces Waxstat Type. Polished SFR430 Waxstat jets can give major problems on later cars in warm weather and (01) Anodised - Red SFR430R heavy traffic use, as they tend to weaken the mixture too much when hot and Anodised - Blue SFR430B will not allow smooth idling. This is an early Midget version. Affordable, fun to drive and easy-to-own classic sports cars, the Midget and Sprite still live up to their original design brief. Kim Henson tells all… Adorned by the famous MG badge, Midgets (together with equivalent Austin Healey Sprite models) are budget-priced classic sports cars offering much more hood-down fun per mile than their size and performance potential might suggest. Even today Sprites/Midgets are still relatively cheap to buy, and fuel costs are about as low www.wheels-alive.co.uk as they can get for a sports car. The original 948cc Austin Healey ‘Frogeye’ Sprite (the basis for all later Sprites ands equivalent Midgets, which essentially differ only in badging and trim) was cleverly designed, developed and produced around Austin A35 components, and appeared in May 1958. It was deliberately intended to be inexpensive to buy and to run. With factory-fitted twin carburettors and other ‘mild’ upgrades to the engine, it produced good performance for its time. It handled well too, and the precise rack and pinion steering system received much praise. In the summer of 1961, the body style was changed and the revised, more powerful models became known as the Mark II Sprite and Mark I Midget (effectively, from this time the Midget ‘Mark’ reference numbers were always one behind those of the Sprite).
