This time those “someone” are an American who comes from the town of Kit Carson, the legendary pioneer of the far west, and the number one of the Austrians, the Olympic DH champion in Sochi, Matthias Mayer. Travis Ganong, the winner of the Santa Caterina Valfurva Downhill World Cup lives with his Canadian girlfriend Marie Michelle Gagnon (she is a specialist of technical World Cup races) on Lake Tahoe, on the border between California and Nevada. Before today’s exploit he was on the podium only once, third place in the Kvitfjell DH, last year. However, for better or worse – and perhaps taking advantage of the long absence of Svindal and Guay due to injury – he is always one of the top DH 7. He grew up in the legendary Squaw Valley ski area, the home of the 1960 Winter Games and was a freeskier before dedicating to alpine skiing. “I love my mountains and the beautiful lake, and of course Marie Michelle.

BORMIO - December 26, 2017 FIRST DH TRAINING IN BORMIO IS IN THE SIGN OF “THE AZZURRI” In spite of a visible slowdown at the finish line Peter Fill was the fastest during the first official training of the Bormio DH race scheduled on December 28. With 1'57 "06 he preceded the team mate Christof Innerhofer with 8/100 and the Austrian Matthias Mayer with 18/100. It’s a raking of great nobility with Hannes Reichelt 4th place (35/100), Dominik Paris 5th place (52/100), and Frenchman Adrien Theaux 6th place (71/100). All athletes, apart from the Austrian Mayer, trained last week in the upper part of the Stelvio and therefore have been able to enjoy greater confidence with some of the most technical parts on the track. The last winner of the Men’s World Cup on the Stelvio, the Norwegian Aksel Lund Svindal, was 9th place (1 "56 from Fill). 18th place for the other Norwegian Kjetil Jansrud (2" 39). "It's always nice to be back here," says Svindal, "it’s among the most difficult slopes of the entire circuit. It’s well prepared and it will be a difficult and exciting one the day of the race". The protagonists love Stelvio. Reichelt says: "It's a good dive and it won’t be easy during the race. The snow is not frozen and that's why it seems even easier than in the past". Peter Fill has the same feeling: "In the last years it was always icy and the skis vibrated much more, but maybe I have become more powerful".

Sports as a Teachable Moment 2 Sports as a Teachable Moment The North American sports culture pervades many aspects of our daily lives. Newspapers print lengthy daily sports reports, and some television stations are devoted exclusively to sports reporting. During an Olympic year, sports events are featured around the clock on most television stations and even very young children are keenly aware that something important is happening in the world about them. The National Hockey League playoffs, the NBA playoffs, World Cup soccer and the World Series dominate discussion and viewing habits in many households. During major sports or playoff events, adults in households across North America demonstrate intense interest and emotional commitment to the sports events unfolding on television screens before them. Young children watching are quick to learn, in both subtle and overt ways, that competitive sports appear to provide adults with enduring interest and entertainment. The imaginative mathematics teacher may find many opportune ‘teachable moments’ in studies of local and worldwide sports events. Using sports as a springboard for mathematics instruction presents learning within meaningful, real- life contexts. Many children are more than spectators of sports events: they are active participants in sports. Some children engage in sports activities independently, while others play sports under parental direction, or even, in some cases, under parental pressure.
