THE ANASON FAMILY IN ROGALAND COUNTY, NORWAY AND JUNEAU COUNTY, WISCONSIN BY LAWRENCE W. ONSAGER THE LEMONWEIR VALLEY PRESS Berrien Springs, Michigan and Mauston, Wisconsin 2013 ANASON FAMILY INTRODUCTION The Anason family has its roots in Rogaland County, in western Norway. Western Norway is the area which had the greatest emigration to the United States. The County of Rogaland, formerly named Stavanger, lies at Norway’s southwestern tip, with the North Sea washing its fjords, beaches and islands. The name Rogaland means “the land of the Ryger,” an old Germanic tribe. The Ryger tribe is believed to have settled there 2,000 years ago. The meaning of the tribal name is uncertain. Rogaland was called Rygiafylke in the Viking age. The earliest known members of the Anason family came from a region of Rogaland that has since become part of Vest-Agder County.

  • A Perspective on Medieval Perception of Norwegian Church Art 53
A perspective on Abstract This paper discusses the broad use of imitation techniques to give the impression of medieval perception of precious materials in Norwegian religious sacred art, with special attention to polychrome wooden objects Norwegian church art from the thirteenth century. The question of how ictive objects made out of wood, covered with chalk ground, metal foil and paint were accepted as key works of art in religious devotion is examined. What Kaja Kollandsrud the objects intended to emulate and how they could compete with precious objects will be discussed. Supporting evidence is ofered from the preserved sacred polychrome sculpture and panel paintings in Norway from the period. What makes an imitation successful is discussed in terms of the factors that contribute to the intended illusion. This is argued in relation to the attitudes towards display of such objects at the time they were installed within the church, which takes them out of the modern constraining concept of art and material value. Introduction he use of painterly materials and techniques to imitate precious metals, stone, pearls, gems, high status textiles and fur is characteristic for the painted objects from the early Middle Ages and throughout the thirteenth century in Norway as elsewhere in Europe. he Church in this period appears to have had no qualms about the emulation of such costly and precious items, as skilled imitation was common practice. In the modern attitude towards imitations, they are generally considered to be cheaper versions of the original. Although the word ‘imitation’ might suggest inferiority in our minds, these polychrome works served as iconic objects in the interiors of medieval churches.1 here were however limits to the substitution of rare and valuable materials with more readily available and cheaper materials.

Abstract Wood-inhabiting fungi were collected on different trees in 99 loca-' lities of alder woods, dominated by Alnus incana or occasionally A. glutinosa, in N-C Sweden and C Norway. Most of the localities are situated near the east coast of Sweden where the prevailing land elevation creates conditions suitable for colonization by alder. The remaining localities are mainly found in the inland parts of Sweden and Norway, along streams, in ravines etc. The investigated localities are briefly described as to their general vegetation, and a regional survey of the alder forests is given. The number of collections of Aphyllophorales amounts to approxi mately 5,000, comprising 286 species. The following new combinations are proposed: Hypoohnicium polonense (Bres.) Strid, H. pruinosum (Bres.) Strid, Phlebia lindtneri (Pil.) Parm. and Sistotrema hete- roncmum (John Erikss.) Strid. Seven species are collected as new to Scandinavia, viz., Botryobasidium aure urn3 Ceratobasidium stridiit Hyphoderma orphanellum, Hyphodontiella multiseptata, Hypoohnicium pruinosum> Phlebia lindtneri and Tubuliorinis effugiens, and approxi mately 85 additional species are reported for the first time from the investigation area. Six specimens of Cortioiaoeae have remained undetermined but are included in the species list.

Friends of the Newport Ship Registered Charity No 1105449 www.newportship.org ____________ ____________________________ Rumours galore Uncertainties breed rumours, and the uncertainty over the future of the Ship is no exception. The most bizarre recent rumour came from a member of the public on a phone-in programme, saying that the Ship had been sold to Canada. Where did that idea come from? Newport City Council's chief rumour-destroyer, Mike Lewis, put the record straight in our October meeting at Malpas Court. Nearly 60 members turned up for this, a fascinating talk on medieval shipping and our AGM. In the last year, our understanding of the Ship has grown immensely as a result of the specialist investigations and work on the hull shape. Conservation continues, but freeze drying of the timbers may take a further 3-4 years, much longer than predicted. However, next Autumn the Project will have to vacate its current premises, so what happens then? York Archaeological Trust is responsible for the freeze drying, so the freeze drier will be taken up to York and the timbers taken up there in batches and then brought back. In the meantime, Newport Council is looking for a building in which the both the fully-conserved timbers and those in the queue for the freeze drier can be stored. The conserved timbers don't require a vast amount of room, but for a year or two there will need to be enough space for two of the tanks currently in the warehouse. The Council would like to find a building which is accessible to the public, and ideally in the city centre, so that the Friends can run it as a museum for the next few years.

The South Polar Race Medal Created by Danuta Solowiej The way to the South Pole / Sydpolen. Roald Amundsen’s track is in Red and Captain Scott’s track is in Green. The South Polar Race Medal Roald Amundsen and his team reaching the Sydpolen on 14 Desember 1911. (Obverse) Captain R. F. Scott, RN and his team reaching the South Pole on 17 January 1912. (Reverse) Created by Danuta Solowiej Published by Sim Comfort Associates 29 March 2012 Background The 100th anniversary of man’s first attainment of the South Pole recalls a story of two iron-willed explorers committed to their final race for the ultimate prize, which resulted in both triumph and tragedy. In July 1895, the International Geographical Congress met in Lon- don and opened Antarctica’s portal by deciding that the southern- most continent would become the primary focus of new explora- tion. Indeed, Antarctica is the only such land mass in our world where man has ventured and not found man. Up until that time, no one had explored the hinterland of the frozen continent, and even the vast majority of its coastline was still unknown. The meet- ing touched off a flurry of activity, and soon thereafter national expeditions and private ventures started organizing: the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration had begun, and the attainment of the South Pole became the pinnacle of that age. Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen (1872-1928) nurtured at an early age a strong desire to be an explorer in his snowy Norwegian surroundings, and later sailed on an Arctic sealing voyage.

The DEER-WOOD project North-Trøndelag county, Norway Skogeierforeninga Nord (Forest Owners’ Association, North) 1. Background – Nordic/ Scottish Collaboration. In February 1998, Inn-Trøndelag Forest Owners’ Association (I-T FOA, later merged into Forest Owners’ Association North) was asked by the Norwegian Forest Owners’ Federation (NFOF) to participate in a project on Managing deers across multiple land ownerships. The background for the question was: 1) that NFOF had taken the responsibility on behalf of Nordic Council of Ministers to establish cooperation between Scottish and Nordic units in forestry, 2) that an initiative had recently been made by Forestry Commission, Edinburgh, on a collaboration on deer management, 3) that an NPP-funding system had been established. Statistics of elk culled in Nord-Trøndelag county (N-T) show that around 1960 1500 elks were culled annually, 1970 600, since then an even growth so for the recent years the annual number culled has reached 4000 or more. In 1997 the venison value amounted to NOK mio 37, while the road side value of timber harvested was NOK mio 184 (average for the 90-es NOK mio 230). Since early 80-es N-T has had the following aim for deer management: ”The deer management should be practiced in order to obtain the highest possible level of production and of venison. At the same time eventual damage on agriculture, horticulture, forestry and traffic should be kept on an acceptable level. There is a general agreement that the management has been successful regarding raising the number of moose and their productivity. The number now is on a historically speaking high level.
