5 JAN 18 1 FEB 18 1 | 5 JAN 18 - 1 FEB 18 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSECinema.COM CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS OF FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 39 Years, 2 Months, and counting… As you’ll spot deep within this programme (and hinted at on the front cover) January 2018 sees the start of a series of films that lead up to celebrations in October marking the 40th birthday of Filmhouse as a public cinema on Lothian Road. We’ve chosen to screen a film from every year we’ve been bringing the very best cinema to the good people of Edinburgh, and while it is tremendous fun looking back through the history of what has shown here, it was quite an undertaking going through all the old programmes and choosing what to show, and a bit of a personal journey for me as one who started coming here as a customer in the mid-80s (I know, I must have started very young...). At that time, I’d no idea that Filmhouse had only been in existence for less than 10 years – it seemed like such an established, essential institution and impossible to imagine it not existing in a city such as Edinburgh. My only hope is that the cinema is as important today as I felt it was then, and that the giants on whose shoulders we currently stand feel we’re worthy of their legacy. I hope you can join us for at least some of the screenings on this trip down memory lane... And now, back to the now. -

The Mystery Motors of the Autosafe “SkyPark”… Huge thanks to a number of you out there who sent me a link to the BBC News article that finally puts the issue I’ve been bleating on about for months (see Filmhouse December and February monthly programme introductions) to bed. Turns out the eight cars that have been trapped in the failed then abandoned automated car park (which is currently being dismantled behind our offices) since it closed in the early 2000s were only ever old bangers brought in to test the automatic parking machinery! Phew! Glad to have gotten to the bottom of that one… Our March programme, as is customary for the time of year, is replete with Oscar® hopefuls, it now being the turn of Lady Bird, Phantom Thread (in 70mm!), A Fantastic Woman, Palme d’Or winner The Square, and The Shape of Water, which continues from February. Awards season is, though, nearly over, as is evidenced by a slew of new films too new to qualify for consideration this year: Lynne Ramsay’s brilliant You Were Never Really Here; Warwick (Samson & Delilah) Thornton’s stunning Aussie ‘western’, Sweet Country, and Wes Anderson’s fabulous Isle of Dogs. And you know what, looking at that list, I’m going to stick my neck out and say that I’m not entirely sure I have ever seen a better line-up of new release cinema, at any one cinema, ever. -

The above-captioned petition was filed by Nia Vardalos (hereinafter, “petitioner”) on January 10, 2003. Petitioner alleges, inter alia, therein that respondents Richard Siegel, an individual and Marathon Entertainment Inc., a California Corporation (hereinafter collectively referred to as “respondents”) violated the Talent Agencies Act (hereinafter, also referred to as the “Act”) by acting in the capacity of a talent agent without being licensed, in violation of Labor Code section 1700.5. Petitioner and respondents entered into an oral agreement (hereinafter referred to as, “Agreement”) in or about November 1997, whereby respondents agreed to act as a personal manager for petitioner and agreed to seek to procure employment for petitioner as a de facto talent agent. In return, petitioner agreed to pay respondents 15% commissions on all gross earnings petitioner received in connection with activities and/or services by petitioner as an actor or writer resulting from agreements entered into or negotiated during the term of the Agreement. The Agreement was terminated by petitioner in or about October, 2000. Petitioner herein seeks a determination from the Labor Commissioner that: respondents have violated section 1700 et seq. of the Labor Code; that the Agreement is void ab initio and is therefore unenforceable; and, that petitioner has no liability thereon to respondents and respondents have no rights or privileges thereunder. -
