Research has tracked the movies released theatrically in the U.S. to determine where they were filmed, why they filmed in the locations they did and how much was spent to produce them. We do this to help businesspeople and policymakers, particularly those with investments in California, better understand the state’s place in the competitive business environment that is feature film production. For reasons described later in this report’s methodology section, FilmL.A. adopted a different film project sampling method for 2016. This year, our sample is based on the top 100 feature films at the domestic box office released theatrically within the U.S. during the 2016 calendar

STATE OF CALIFORNIA Department of Industrial Relations Division of Labor Standards Enforcement BY: EDNA GARCIA EARLEY, State Bar No. 195661 320 W. 4th Street, Suite 430 Los Angeles, California 90013 Tel.: (213) 897-1511 Attorney for the Labor Commissioner BEFORE THE LABOR COMMISSIONER OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA NIA VARDALOS, An Individual, CASE NO. TAC 2-03 Petitioner, DETERMINATION OF CONTROVERSY vs. RICHARD SIEGEL, an individual; MARATHON ENTERTAINMENT, INC., A California Corporation, Respondent. The above-captioned petition was filed by Nia Vardalos (hereinafter, “petitioner”) on January 10, 2003. Petitioner alleges, inter alia, therein that respondents Richard Siegel, an individual and Marathon Entertainment Inc., a California Corporation (hereinafter collectively referred to as “respondents”) violated the Talent Agencies Act (hereinafter, also referred to as the “Act”) by acting in the capacity of a talent agent without being licensed, in violation of Labor Code section 1700.5. Petitioner and respondents entered into an oral agreement (hereinafter referred to as, “Agreement”) in or about November 1997, whereby respondents agreed to act as a personal manager for petitioner and agreed to seek to procure employment for petitioner as a de facto talent agent. In return, petitioner agreed to pay respondents 15% commissions on all gross earnings petitioner received in connection with activities and/or services by petitioner as an actor or writer resulting from agreements entered into or negotiated during the term of the Agreement. The Agreement was terminated by petitioner in or about October, 2000. Petitioner herein seeks a determination from the Labor Commissioner that: respondents have violated section 1700 et seq. of the Labor Code; that the Agreement is void ab initio and is therefore unenforceable; and, that petitioner has no liability thereon to respondents and respondents have no rights or privileges thereunder.

And it is so bad, this film Where Greek Wedding offered a satirical take of old-world family ways as fond and familiar as it was stereotyped, My Life in Ruins offers roundly stereotyped caricatures of just about everybody, but without the fondness or familiarity.
