Resumen: Una nueva especie de Granulina Jousseaume, 1888, de 2´5 mm de longitud de la concha, es descrita en base a 11 ejemplares colectados vivos en fondos rocosos a 21 m de profundidad en Tarrafal, Santiago, ilustrando la llamativa coloración de los animales vivos y su poca variabilidad, además de la concha, que se compara con la de otras dos especies congéneres en el archipiélago: Granulina ocarina Fernandes, 1987 y Granulina fernandesi Boyer & Rolán, 1999. Abstract: A new species of Granulina Jousseaume, 1888, of 2’5 mm in length of the shell, is described based on 11 spec- imens collected alive in rocky bottoms at 21 m depth in Tarrafal, Santiago, illustrating the striking coloration of the live animals and their low variability, in addition to the shell, which compares with that of two other congener species in the archipelago: Granulina ocarina Fernandes, 1987 and Granulina fernandesi Boyer & Rolán, 1999. We hope members will be out in the field collecting and enjoying themselves in the long summer days. Let's gather some "Marine Observations" and share them at the August meeting. On Thursday, August 27, the JSC will convene at the usual time (7:00 PM) and place (Southeast Branch, Jacksonville Public Library <http://jpl.coj.net/lib/branches/se.html>). The shell-of-the-month will be presented by Harry Lee. His choice will be made at the annual Conchologists of America (COA) convention in Weston, FL (July 12-18). It will be the most spectacular shell he observes at the scientific programs, oral and silent auctions, bourse, on the field trips, and in more impromptu encounters. Rick Edwards, who is also planning to attend, will do the photography. The main program will be given by Charlotte Thorpe, who is fresh back from a diving expedition to the Dominican Republic. Likely there'll be several living mollusks caught in natural poses by Char's well-honed underwater photographic skills. President’s Message Dear JSC Members, There is not much activity to mention for the club over the next couple of months, we are currently cruising in idle mode. Summer is upon us and for all of us currently living in Florida, the past few days have already brought on that incredibly warm and humid feeling. With that said, I am dreaming of shelling on the beach for some marine snails on a warm sunny day, shelling in the bush for some land snails after a good rain, or cruising down a nice cool river or creek with my snorkeling gear looking for some aquatics! I'd probably enjoy self propelling a jet back through the breeze, but it seems there have been no flying snails discovered as of yet, so I'll pass on that adventure for the time being.

Lecce-Monteroni 73100 Lecce RESEARCH ARTICLE ITALY Abstract 1 - Lagoons are ecotones between freshwater, marine and terrestrial biotopes, characterized by internal ecosystem heterogeneity, due to patchy spatial and temporal distribution of biotic and abiotic components, and inter-ecosystem heterogeneity, due to the various terrestrial-freshwater and freshwater-marine interfaces. 2 - Here, we carried out an analysis of environmental heterogeneity and benthic macro-invertebrate guilds in a sample of 26 Italian lagoons based on literature produced over a 25 year period.. 3 - In all, 944 taxonomic units, belonging to 13 phyla, 106 orders and 343 families, were recorded. Most species had a very restricted geographic distribution range. 75% of the macroinvertebrate taxa were observed in less than three of the twenty-six lagoons considered. 4 - Similarity among macroinvertebrate guilds in lagoon ecosystems was remarkably low, ranging from 10.5%±7.5% to 34.2%±14.4% depending on the level of taxonomic resolution. 5 - Taxonomic heterogeneity was due to both differences in species richness and to differences in species composition: width of seaward outlet, lagoon surface area and water salinity were the most important factors affecting species richness, together accounting for up to 75% of observed inter-lagoon heterogeneity, while distance between lagoons was the most significant factor affecting similarity of species composition.

IV: Volutoidea, Cancellariidae, Costellariidae, & Olivoidea Timothy Campbell Follow this and additional works at: https://digitalcommons.gardner-webb.edu/early-pleistocene- mollusca-photographic-guide Part of the Marine Biology Commons i Introduction Location The Lower Waccamaw Formation contains a rich basal Pleistocene (early Gelasian, 2.4-2.0 million years old) fauna with an extreme abundance and diversity of mollusks (>90% of the fossils and 900+ species) in addition to various echinoderms, arthropods, annelids, corals, bryozoans, and vertebrates. Based upon the ranges of the extant species, the climate seems to have been warmer than today. This diverse subtropical fauna can be found in patches in southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina. It is roughly equivalent to the modern fauna of central South Carolina to North Florida, however, there was dramatic faunal turnover about 1.7 MYA and the modern Carolinian fauna is much more similar to the modern Caribbean fauna than the Waccamaw Formation fossils are to equivalent age Caribbean faunas. Fossils have been known from the Lower Waccamaw Formation since prehistory. Although the first scientific study was Tuomey and Holmes, 1856, no single monograph exists. Roughly 40% of the species are extant. The species derive from multiple habitats, including 30-50 m sandy-bottom shelf, cementing bivalve reef, 10-20 m sandy- bottom shelf, surf to subtidal, saltmarsh, muddy-bottom sound, and freshwater to brackish. ABSTRACT, Four new cystiscid species (two Granulina and two Gibberula) are described from samples dredged firom offshore subtidal habitats off the Western Fijiian Islands. Granulina globosa sp. nov. is compared with similar species, and the surface microsculpture of the shell is presented to add to the body of évidence supporting this as an important characteristic of the genus. The generic placement of Granulina mamanucensis sp. nov. is discussed in depth. Gibberula marinae sp. nov. is considered to be a member of the group 'philippi', a widespread group of small white shelled Gibberula with variable animal chromatism. Gibberula vomoensis sp. nov., an extremely small species with an unusual morphology, is described.
