Some who think such people should not receive Communion cite canon 915 from the Church’s Code of Canon Law—that ministers must deny Holy Communion to those obstinately and publicly persisting in grave sin, and some point to canon 916—that each Catholic, if personally conscious of grave sin, should refrain from presenting himself for Holy Communion. Other people in the discussion raise some concerns: Why politicians and not other Catholics, is this just a co-opting of the Church for political purposes? Holy Communion is the medicine of mercy, isn’t it those who struggle to live the Church’s teaching, or perhaps need some conversion, who need the Eucharist most!? I think that explaining the thinking behind these issues might help us understand what is going on a little more clearly, even if we do or do not align with a given opinion on this controversy. First, we have to understand the reason behind Canon 915 and 916. They represent the twofold concern of the Church for the good of souls. Canon 915 is about safeguarding the faithful as a whole from scandal—leading another person into error or sin by bad example; it is not a judgment on the individual person, as we do not know their soul and so we do not know their culpability for the evil that they are publicly known to be committing—whether they are guilty of a mortal sin, rather it is a judgment of the evil behavior and a pastoral desire by the Church not to lead others into thinking one may be both a devout Catholic—much less a human being of minimal good will—and support an evil like abortion (or any grave objective evil, of course, but abortion—and euthanasia—have a preeminence of importance; other issues, even ones that touch on support and quality of life, people debate the how and why given policies may be good or evil, but murder is always wrong in every case). Canon 916, on the other hand is oriented towards the good of the individual, putting into law what St Paul says in 1 Corinthians 11:27-30, that to eat and drink the Eucharist unworthily is a condemnation. Yes, the Eucharist is the medicine of mercy, it is the most needed thing by those whose faith or moral life is struggling, and it does in fact heal us of our venial sins and give us strength to resist especially grave temptations that plague each one of us in our own way, however if we are already under the burden of a grave sin, our Communion is sacrilegious and only makes our situation worse. Canon 916 is a call to conversion. OK… but, plenty of Catholics have been deceived or corrupted into tolerating or advocating abortion, or that we should not “impose” our religious view on the broader society, why single out politicians? The argument turns on the very distinction between canon 915 and canon 916. For most Catholics, we do not have the kind of visibility that could make our obstinacy in evil publicly manifest, but public figures like politicians do. Thus, canon 915 can arguably be invoked if such a person does not abstain from Holy Communion due to canon 916. While some may doubtless care about this issue for petty political reasons, I would urge us all not to have such motives. Happy Ascension, Fr.
