Only two populations of this plant have been observed, both along disturbed roadsides on the West Coast of South Africa. The extent and invasive potential of this infestation in the country is still limited but the species is known to be an aggressive invader in other parts of the world. © 2011 SAAB. DEPARTMENT OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE PROPOSED CHANGES IN THE REGULATIONS Title 3, California Code of Regulations Section 4500 Noxious Weed Species INITIAL STATEMENT OF REASONS/ POLICY STATEMENT OVERVIEW Description of Public Problem, Administration Requirement, or Other Condition or Circumstance the Regulation is Intended to Address This regulation is intended to address the obligation of the Department of Food and Agriculture (Department) to protect the agricultural industry from the movement and spread of injurious noxious weeds into and within California. Specific Purpose and Factual Basis The specific purpose of section 4500 is to provide authority to the state to regulate the movement of the listed noxious weeds species into or within California. The factual basis for the determination by the Department that the amendment of this regulation is necessary is as follows: Invasive weeds have significant effects on the agricultural industry and environment. They can intensify drought impacts, increase fire hazard, decrease rangeland productivity, reduce water resources, raise nursery business costs, and diminish wildland diversity. Alien weeds spread to and invade approximately 700,000 hectares per year of U.S. wildlife habitat. One such pest weed, introduced in the early 19th century as an ornamental plant, is the European purple loosestrife. Spreading at a rate of 115,000 hectares per year, the weed population changes the basic structure of most of the invaded wetlands. Competitive stands of purple loosestrife have reduced the biomass of 44 native plant species and endangered wildlife such as the bog turtle that depends on these native plants. Loosestrife now occurs in 48 states and costs $45 million per year in control expenses and forage losses. -

The International Aloe Science Council Presents an Aloe Scientific Primer International Aloe Science Council Commonly Traded Aloe Species The plant Aloe spp. has long been utilized in a variety of ways throughout history, which has been well documented elsewhere and need not be recounted in detail here, particularly as the purpose of this document is to discuss current and commonly traded aloe species. Aloe, in its various species, can presently and in the recent past be found in use as a decorative element in homes and gardens, in the creation of pharmaceuticals, in wound care products such as burn ointment, sunburn protectant and similar applications, in cosmetics, and as a food, dietary supplements and other health and nutrition related items. Recently, various species of the plant have even been used to weave into clothing and in mattresses. Those species of Aloe commonly used in commerce today can be divided into three primary categories: those used primarily in the production of crude drugs, those used primarily for decorative purposes, and those used in health, nutritional and related products. For reference purposes, this paper will outline the primary species and their uses, but will focus on the species most widely used in commerce for health, nutritional, cosmetic and supplement products, such as aloe vera. Components of aloe vera currently used in commerce The Aloe plant, and in particular aloe vera, has three distinct raw material components that are processed and found in manufactured goods: leaf juice; inner leaf juice; and aloe latex. A great deal of confusion regarding the terminology of this botanical and its components has been identified, mostly because of a lack of clear definitions, marketing, and other factors. -

[email protected] RESUMEN: En este trabajo se reconoce la presencia en el Valle del Ebro de cuatro especies del género Asphodelus: A. ayardii Jahand. & Maire, A. cera- siferus J. Gay, A. fistulosus L. y A. serotinus Wolley-Dod. De éstas, se estudia la morfología, el tratamiento taxonómico, la distribución, el hábitat y la fenología de A. ayardii y A. fistulosus, dos taxones hasta la fecha mal conocidos en el Va- lle del Ebro. En el contexto del área de estudio, predomina A. fistulosus sobre A. ayardii, mientras que A. tenuifolius no estaría presente, y donde las grandes in- fraestructuras viarias de transporte favorecerían su expansión. Se aporta material gráfico, mapas de distribución y la relación del material estudiado. The plant genus Strelitzia occurs naturally in the eastern parts of southern Africa. It comprises three arborescent species, known as wild bananas, and two acaulescent species, known as crane flowers or bird-of-paradise flowers. The logo of the South African National Biodiversity Institute is based on the striking inflorescence of Strelitzia reginae, a native of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal that has become a garden favourite worldwide. It symbol- ises the commitment of the Institute to champion the exploration, conservation, sustainable use, appreciation and enjoyment of South Africa’s exceptionally rich biodiversity for all people. Abstact: Aloe vera is a natural product that is now a day frequently used in the field of Cosmetology.Though there are various indications for its use, controlled trials are needed to determine its real efficacy. Aloe vera belongs to family Xanthorrhoeaceae (APG III System, 2009) commonly known as Ghrit Kumari, is the oldest medicinal plant ever known and the most applied medicinal plant worldwide. Aloe vera is used for vigor, wellness and medicinal purposes since rigvedic times. Health benefits of aloe vera include its application in wound healing, treating burns minimizing frost bite damage, protection against skin damaged from x-rays ,lung cancer, intestinal problems, Increasing High Density Lipoproteins(HDL), reducing Low Density Lipoproteins(LDL), reducing blood sugar in diabetics , fighting acquired Immuno Deficiency Sysdrome (AIDS),allergies and improving immune system. Phytochemistry of aloe vera gel has revealed the presence more than 200 boiactive chemicals. Aloe vera gel is extracted from its leaves and appropriate processing technique are needed for stabilization as well as preparation of the end products. Aloe vera gel contains important ingredients including 19 of 20 amino acids needed by the human body and 7 of the 8 essential once that just can not be made. In industries Aloe vera is also used to extract liver tonic. The present research article is an efforts towards the industrial and ethno- botanical properties of Aloe vera. -

Asphodelus L. is a widespread genus with about 20 species in the Asphodelaceae family. Most of its species are distributed in Mediterranean regions and among them Asphodelus fistulosus as a species with a broad ecological range is recorded from Gilan and Mazandaran provinces in North of Iran for the first time. The populations of this species are observed on the roadside, abandoned, disturbed farms and gardens.
