To the MJC Curriculum Committee:

Per Academic Senate Resolution F18-E, the standard unit value for courses intended for general education will be the unit value on the C-ID descriptor in the “minimum unit” field OR the median unit value among California Community Colleges if higher than the C-ID minimum. In order to meet the CCC median of higher units, more than half of the CCCs must offer the proposed course at the higher unit value. We recognize some colleges may not offer the course, so median will be determined based on number of CCCs that do.

This SUR Committee is intended to validate evidence accuracy, currency, and completeness to ensure it conforms to criteria set forth in Senate Resolution F-18E.

This report serves as the final analysis of the Standard Unit Review (SUR) Committee established to review evidence forms for SPANISH 109 and SPANISH 110 per review process approved by Academic Senate Resolution F18-D.

This SUR Committee is comprised of Tina Akers-Porter (Chair), Jessica Brennan, and Hector Duarte.

The Evidence Forms provided for Spanish 109 to show that unit value requested does meet the criteria for demonstrating course meets median unit value among California Community Colleges have been found valid, invalid, or unable to be validated by the three SUR Sub-committee Members:

Tina Akers-Porter (Chair): Valid

Jessica Brennan: Valid

Hector Duarte: Valid

NOTES:

• Diablo Valley (9) should list SPAN 240 Spanish for Heritage Speakers I not SPAN 220 but both courses are 5 units. • LTCC (20) is on the quarter system which is 6 units (4 semester units) • Orange Coast SPAN A160 Spanish for Spanish Speakers 1 is 5 units and was left off of the SPAN 109 evidence form but included on SPAN 110 evidence form. • Las Positas was listed twice (22 and 23) on the evidence form but the link connects to Monterey Peninsula which lists Spanish 1S-A Elementary Spanish for Spanish Speakers I at 5 units. • Some colleges such as Cerritos, Oxnard, and San Diego list 5 units but have 18 hours of additional lab to the listed 90 hours lecture. • Many colleges (LA Pierce, Porterville, Merced, Monterey, …) have IGETC 3B approval. • Madera Community College (just added to the CCC System) added equivalent courses to MJC Span 109/110 at 5 units (SPAN 3NS/4NS) • (49) - SPAN 003A is Advanced Spanish Oral and Written. Title does not suggest that it is specifically for Spanish Speakers but course has C-ID 220 approval which suggests equivalency to MJC SPAN 109 • SPAN 20A is 4 units, not 5. • is listed twice (16 and 17) on the evidence form.

Overall

• SUR Committee verified nine colleges do not offer the equivalent of the MJC SPAN 109 course: o Allan Hancock, Butte, , , Columbia College, , , DeAnza College, Calbright College • Of the remaining 107 colleges (116 current CCC’s- 9 CCC’s that do not offer SPAN 109 equiv), we verified that 57 colleges offer a Spanish 109 equivalent course at 5 units, which exceeds the required 54 colleges needed to meet the median unit count as outlined in Senate Resolution F18-E. • Once median was met, the verification search was ended.

The Evidence Forms provided for Spanish 110 to show that unit value requested does meet the criteria for demonstrating course meets median unit value among California Community Colleges have been found valid, invalid, or unable to be validated by the three SUR Sub-committee Members:

Tina Akers-Porter (Chair): Valid

Jessica Brennan: Valid

NOTES:

• Diablo Valley is missing from SPAN 110 evidence form but was included on SPAN 109. Equivalent course SPAN 241 Spanish for Heritage Speakers II is offered at 5 units. • LTCC (20) is on the quarter system which is 6 units (4 semester units) • Similar statement to SPAN 109, some colleges have 18 hours of additional lab to the listed 90 hours lecture. • Many colleges (LA Pierce, Porterville, Merced, Monterey, …) have IGETC 3B approval. • Madera Community College (just added to the CCC System) added equivalent courses to MJC Span 109/110 at 5 units (SPAN 3NS/4NS) • West Valley College (49) - SPAN 003B is Advanced Spanish Oral and Written.
