This essay is divided into three sections: 1) an analysis of ancient reports concerning Lykos, 2) an inter- pretation of Aristophanes, Wasps, 387-394, 3) a suggestion as to the location of Philokleon's law court. LYKOS Although the name was not rare, the particular Lykos of Aristophanes, Wasps, 387-394 has not been plausibly identified with any of the rivers, heroes or mortals who were also called Lykos.' In fact, despite the elaborations of scholarship, early and late, almost everything that can confidently be said of him has its source in the lines quoted at the head of this paper. For the hour has brought together Demeter and Demetrios; she comes to celebrate the solemn mysteries of the Kore, while he is here füll of joy, as befits the god, fair and laughing. His appearance is majestic, his friends all around him and he in their midst, as though they were stars and he the sun. Hail son of the most powerful god Poseidon and Aphrodite. (Douris FGrH76 Fl3, cf. Demochares FGrH75 F2, both at Athen. 6.253b-f; trans. as Austin 35) Had only the first lines of this ritual song survived, the modern reader would notice the assimilaüon of the adventus of a mortal king with that of a divinity, the etymo- logical association of his name with that of Demeter, the parentage of mighty gods, and the external features of a divine ruler (joy, beauty, majesty). Very often scholars reach their conclusions about aspects of ancient mentality on the basis of a fragment; and very often - unavoidably - they conceive only a fragment of reality. -

“THE ENDURING GODDESS: Artemis and Mary, Mother of Jesus” Carla Ionescu A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN HUMANITIES YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO May 2016 © Carla Ionescu, 2016 ii Abstract: Tradition states that the most popular Olympian deities are Apollo, Athena, Zeus and Dionysius. These divinities played key roles in the communal, political and ritual development of the Greco-Roman world. This work suggests that this deeply entrenched scholarly tradition is fissured with misunderstandings of Greek and Ephesian popular culture, and provides evidence that clearly suggests Artemis is the most prevalent and influential goddess of the Mediterranean, with roots embedded in the community and culture of this area that can be traced further back in time than even the arrival of the Greeks. In fact, Artemis’ reign is so fundamental to the cultural identity of her worshippers that even when facing the onslaught of early Christianity, she could not be deposed. Instead, she survived the conquering of this new religion under the guise of Mary, Mother of Jesus. Using methods of narrative analysis, as well as review of archeological findings, this work demonstrates that the customs devoted to the worship of Artemis were fundamental to the civic identity of her followers, particularly in the city of Ephesus in which Artemis reigned not only as Queen of Heaven, but also as Mother, Healer and Saviour. Reverence for her was as so deeply entrenched in the community of this city, that after her temple was destroyed, and Christian churches were built on top of her sacred places, her citizens brought forward the only female character in the new ruling religion of Christianity, the Virgin Mary, and re-named her Theotokos, Mother of God, within its city walls. -

Gregory 1 Copyrighted by Bonnie McCutcheon 2018 2 Abstract Delos, birthplace to the gods Apollo and Artemis, was home to a significant sanctuary to Apollo in the Greek Archaic Period. Apollo and his sanctuary received many spectacular gifts which stand out in the historical record, including world-premiere works of art, such as the Nikandre kore. The turannos of Samos, Polycrates, notably gave to Apollo the neighboring island of Rheneia, which he attached to Delos with a chain. These and other gifts include elements of the spectacular which make them stand out. To understand the role played by elements of spectacle in gifts at Delos, we must examine these gifts as a discourse. Only by putting them in context with one another can we fully understand the messages that each gift was meant to communicate. Few walk away from the experience unchanged. Yet, the transformation of the feminine body mirrors the transformation of the feminine psyche, what occurs physically also occurs instinctually. One does not develop without affecting the other. Often these ripples of change can tear open the psyche causing a loss of self that is labeled as postpartum depression, anxiety, or depression. This article explores a postpartum loss of self and the personal experience of postpartum depression through the myth of Demeter and Persephone. There is an unaided search for meaning in motherhood that is explored in this article through myth. It aims to pursue a deeper understanding of women through a conversation of the feminine soul. Keywords Demeter, Persephone, postpartum depression, motherhood, women’s studies, mothers groups “Once you shave your legs, you can not go back.” Wise words spoken from a knowing mother watching her daughter “lingering on the borders of Hades [...]” (Jung and Kerényi 108). Many events in life hold this truth - the death of a loved one, the submission of our body to the pleasure of another, the birth of a child. Events such as these alter us. And though the decision to descend is sometimes our own, the descent never feels completely willing. “The ego still yearns for the status quo, but further down the price has been paid, and we can’t go back” (Luke 195). -

Greek Mysteries
GREEK MYSTERIES Mystery cults represent the spiritual attempts of the ancient Greeks to deal with their mortality. As these cults had to do with the individual’s inner self, privacy was paramount and was secured by an initiation ceremony, a personal ritual that estab- lished a close bond between the individual and the gods. Once initiated, the indi- vidual was liberated from the fear of death by sharing the eternal truth, known only to the immortals. Because of the oath of silence taken by the initiates, a thick veil of secrecy covers those cults and archaeology has become our main tool in deciphering their meaning. In a field where archaeological research constantly brings new data to light, this volume provides a close analysis of the most recent discoveries, as well as a critical re-evaluation of the older evidence. The book focuses not only on the major cults of Eleusis and Samothrace, but also on the lesser-known Mysteries in various parts of Greece, over a period of almost two thousand years, from the Late Bronze Age to the Roman Imperial period. HESPERIA 73 (2004) APOLLO AND THE Pages 40z-426 ARCHAIC TEMPLE AT CORINTH ABSTRACT After a detailed examination of the literary,epigraphic, and archaeological evidence, the authors argue that the prominent Archaic Doric temple at Corinth was dedicatedto Apollo. It is this temple with its bronze statue that Pausanias(2.3.6) saw on his right as he left the areaof the forum, taking the road to Sikyon. In furthersupport of this identification,the authorspresent a previously unpublished Archaic terracottapinax, possibly inscribed with a dedication to Apollo. The plaquewas found duringexcavations at Corinth in 1902 and is now, apparently,lost. The Archaic Doric temple that stands on the hill above the Roman forum at Corinth is the single most imposing monument to that city's earlygreat- ness.' Visible since the middle of the sixth century B.C.when it was built, the temple has served as a beacon and focus for early travelers, the first excavatorsof Corinth, and visitors to the site. Nevertheless, the identifica- tion of this major monument has remained a matter of debate.2 In 1886, the first excavator,Wilhelm Dbrpfeld, stated that the temple's dedication was unknown, although some had attributedit to Athena Chali- nitis.3 In the earliest excavation reports of the American School of Classi- cal Studies at Athens, it appearsas the "Old Temple."4With the discovery of the theater in 1897 and the Fountain of Peirene in 1898, however, the excavated site of Corinth could be related to the description of Pausanias, and by 1898 Rufus B. Richardson had identified the Old Temple as the Temple of Apollo.5 It was published as such by Richard Stillwell6 and, in 1.
