For this, the number of individuals sampled in 1 ha of the forest, during a phytosociological survey completed 2 days before the accidental fire, was compared with the survivors recorded afterwards in the reinventory of the area taken 2 days and 10 months after the fire. For the surveys, the area of 1 ha was subdivided into 50 plots of 10 m  20 m, and all the individuals with circumference at breast height ðCBHÞ15 cm were sampled. Chemical analysis of the 30 soil samples collected 2 days before the fire were compared with those obtained 15 days and 1 year after the fire. It was seen that, soon after the fire, there was a significant increase in the nutrient levels in the soil, an increase in the pH and a decrease in the aluminum toxicity. However, after 1 year, losses by lixiviation resulted in a nutrient reserve in the soil of less than that before the fire. The tree mortality was extremely high (23.98%), particularly amongst the younger individuals of the population (93.68% of the total of deaths in the period). There was no significant reduction in the forest richness analyzed: 60% of the species had reduced populations after the fire, but just four species were locally extinct. Results, however, demonstrated a role for fire in the selection of resistant species or those adapted to fires, since some species demonstrated a greater tolerance to the fire than others. # 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Bruce was not here specifically to cover the Encontro Xingu, but such a unique gathering of Indians and rural people was an opportunity the team could not resist. They seemed bowled over by the sheer scale of the event, but confused about why the Brazilian Government had decided not to send any senior representatives to hear the Indians’ case. The Kayapo arrived in a column, dancing and chanting. Keith, who is very tall, was surrounded by the warriors as they swept into the arena, circling in the traditional way. He relished the experience and emerged beaming. Instinctively sensing another photo opportunity, the Indians rushed into the water, making symbolic use of the river to highlight their relationship with it.

    Chapter 12 Indigenous Participation in the Native Seed Market: Adapting Ethnic Institutions for Ecological Restoration in the Southeastern Amazon Danilo Ignacio de Urzedo, Robert Fisher, Dannyel Sá, and Rodrigo Junqueira Abstract Forest and landscape restoration are emerging globally as a major chal- lenge for development and conservation in the twenty-first century. With a restoration market providing demand for participation in supplying products and services, such as native seed, Indigenous communities have experienced new opportunities for cash income and livelihood improvements. This chapter explores the ways different Indigenous populations in Brazil have engaged in the native seed trade for restor- ing degraded lands, and the outcomes of their participation. We cover a case study based on one decade’s experience of the Xingu Seeds Network, focusing on chal- lenges faced by 232 Indigenous people, mostly women, from 13 villages of Ikpeng, Kawaiwete, Matipu, Panará, Wauja, Xavante and Yudja ethnicity in the southeastern Amazon. Indigenous communities have engaged in the activity mainly to secure cur- rent and future access to natural resources. Although communities have shown a large fluctuation in their seed production and cash income over the years, these collectors have produced 6.7 tonnes of seeds from 159 species leading to US$ 65 thousand cash income for households. Native seed production is strongly aligned with tradi- tional knowledge with outcomes related to women’s empowerment, opportunities for young people, territorial mapping, and building local organizations.     Our Banner Statement This photo captures the Kalapalo tribe’s celebration of the Kuarup, a funeral rite, in the Xingu Indigenous Park in Mato Grosso, Brazil. A celebration of life and last goodbye to the dead in the Xingu, neighboring tribes are all invited to partake in the festivities, which pay homage to members of the tribes, and to people who have strong connections to the tribes of the region, or have notoriously fought in defense of Indigenous rights, like Brazilian anthropologist Darcy Ribeiro (honored in 2012). In light of constant attacks against Indigenous populations in Brazil and elsewhere around the globe, recognizing Indigenous history reflects not only a message against the ideological divisiveness and the culturally-hegemonic practices currently growing throughout our world, but also espouses the importance of environmental preservation, and asks for a reevaluation of traditional views on economic growth. Lands protected for Indigenous use in Brazil are one of the last lines of defense against deforestation-practices that favor the bovine and farming industries. We chose this photo to honor a history and an ethos of cultural and environmental interdependence, that is often overlooked and suppressed in the thirst for modernization and economic intemperance. "I am as much constituted by those I do grieve as by those whose deaths I disavow," emphasized Judith Butler in her article "Violence, Mourning, Politics" (Studies in ​ Gender and Sexuality 4(1): 9-37, 2003). Her solidarity with indigenous communities in ​ Brazil serves as an example of her philosophical case for "egalitarian mourning" as a public and collective practice to expand human rights.
