Belém, Pará, Brasil Abstract: Fertile dark anthrosols associated with pre-Columbian settlement across the Amazon Basin have sparked wide interest for their potential contribution to sustainable use and management of tropical soils and ecosystems. In the Upper Xingu region of the southern Amazon, research on archaeological settlements and among contemporary descendant populations provides critical new data on the formation and use of anthrosols. These findings provide a basis for describing the variability of soil modifications that result from diverse human activities and a general model for the formation of Amazonian anthrosols. They underscore the potential for indigenous systems of knowledge and resource management to inform efforts for conservation and sustainable development of Amazonian ecosystems. Keywords: Anthrosols. Resumo: Antrossolos escuros e férteis associados a assentamentos pré-colombianos em toda a bacia amazônica têm despertado interesse por sua contribuição potencial no uso e manejo sustentável de solos e ecossistemas tropicais. Na região do alto rio Xingu, no sul da Amazônia, pesquisas sobre assentamentos arqueológicos e populações indígenas contemporâneas oferecem novos dados relevantes sobre a formação e o uso dos antrossolos. Os resultados fornecem uma base para a descrição da variabilidade de modificações no solo oriundas de diversas atividades humanas e um modelo geral para a formação de antrossolos amazônicos. A pesquisa mostra o potencial dos sistemas indígenas de conhecimento e manejo de recursos em contribuir na conservação e no desenvolvimento sustentável de ecossistemas amazônicos. Amazonian farmers seek out ADE to grow crops because the extraordinarily high fertility allows them to grow a more diverse range of cultivars much more intensively than on the typical upland soils (Arroyo-Kalin, 2008; Fraser, 2010; Fraser et al., 2011a, 2012; German, 2001; Hiraoka et al., 2003; Kawa et al., 2011; Lehmann et al., 2003b; Smith, 1980; Steiner et al., 2009; Woods and McCann, 1999). Encontro Xingu ‘08 Day 5: Riverside Departure 27 May 2008 Participants began to assemble at the riverside from 7:30 with the arrival of buses loaded with rural workers and small farmers from the surrounding area. Many had started out in the small hours just to attend this last day; others had been in Altamira for some days. By the time the Indians arrived, more than an hour later, the non-Indians were in full swing. They formed an arena surrounded by banners, and several community leaders made impassioned speeches. An unexpected arrival was the BBC’s Bruce Parry. He is in the Amazon making a series with Indus Films, following the river from its source in the Peruvian Andes to its mouth. Cameraman Keith’s video camera simply dwarfed everyone else’s, as did the Indus crew of seven. Bruce was not here specifically to cover the Encontro Xingu, but such a unique gathering of Indians and rural people was an opportunity the team could not resist. They seemed bowled over by the sheer scale of the event, but confused about why the Brazilian Government had decided not to send any senior representatives to hear the Indians’ case. The Kayapo arrived in a column, dancing and chanting. Keith, who is very tall, was surrounded by the warriors as they swept into the arena, circling in the traditional way. He relished the experience and emerged beaming. Instinctively sensing another photo opportunity, the Indians rushed into the water, making symbolic use of the river to highlight their relationship with it.

    Terra Preta Amazonian Dark Earth Terra Preta EPi’s Carbon Char residue offers a wide variety of uses, although much of this choice is determined by the type of material to be processed and the conditions applied by the process. As a smokeless fuel it can provide high levels of energy, acting as a substitute for naturally occurring resources such as coal or gas. Although high levels of inert will have a detrimental affect to the overall calorific value of the fuel. Char created from processing plant and cellulosic material will present opportunities to convert the char into Activated Carbon, used in the air and water purification industries. But more recently, scientists around the world have become aware of its potential as a soil conditioner and fertiliser with extensive horticultural and environmental benefits. This high quality, energy rich carbon char, is the residual solid that remains after processing organic material using EPi’s unique technology. There is minimal variation in the composition of the residual char resulting from various materials treated by our process, because the organic content will always be reduced to carbon. Any volatile matter (PAH’s, VOCs & SVOCs) that may have been present within the original material, is completely destroyed by exposure to high temperatures during our process. Only the inert material remains unchanged . “Terra preta” (which means Dark Soil in Portuguese) refers to vast expanses of very dark soils found in the Amazon Basin, also known as "Amazonian Dark Earth" or "Indian Black Earth". In Portuguese its full name is “Terra preta de indio”. These soils are highly fertile and nutrient rich and it is thought that they were formed by the early Aztec and Mayan civilisations, who fertilised the land with charcoal and pottery shards, together with various plant and animal residues.

Among the impediments that failed to halt the dam were the resistance efforts of both indigenous and non-indigenous victims of the dam’s impacts, as well as the non- governmental organizations and other actors supporting their cause. The pro-dam side had massive political and financial support from the top levels of the Brazilian government, including vigorous involvement of the country’s president. At the same time, achievements of the anti-dam side, particularly the local grassroots organizations, have provided inspiration for resource struggles elsewhere (although the victories of the resis- tance are significantly less definitive than was thought by many at the time). Starting from a description of the uluki exchange ceremony, we will discuss how this ritual, by mobilizing Xinguano ideas about friendship, produces contexts of interaction in which characteristics of intra-village sociality are extended to regional sociality. At the same time that the uluki defines, together with other regional rituals, a certain “Xinguano interiority” (the world of multi-community rituals), it is also one of its main forms of opening, having the potential to attract to the Xinguano world not only singular persons, but entire groups. While they are intrinsic for human life, excess nitrogen from fertilizer use has a negative impact on air, soil, and water quality. Furthermore, these fertilizers can gradually degrade the fertility of soils, and the production of nitrogen-based fertilizer consumes and emits large quantities of fossil fuels. Fertilizer use cannot be removed but could potentially be replaced. This thesis focuses on African Dark Earths in Ghana and discusses the feasibility of using these soils as an alternative for nitrogen-based fertilizer. This question has been examined through an overview of available literature and data regarding known anthropogenic soils in both the Amazonian Basin and West Africa.

    DID THE BUDDHA BELIEVE IN KARMA AND REBIRTH 1 JOHANNES BRONKHORST DID THE BUDDHA BELIEVE IN KARMA AND REBIRTH?* (published in: Journal of the International Association of Buddhist Studies 21(1), 1998, pp. 1-19) The title of this lecture may raise some questions. Before we can even try to answer the question whether the Buddha believed in karma and rebirth, we have to address a few other ones. One is whether karma and rebirth necessarily form a couple. We will see that not all scholars have looked upon these elements in this way, and that some have suggested that the Buddha may have believed in only one of these two. An equally important question concerns the issue whether philological research can ever hope to find out anything about the historical Buddha.1 Isn't it safer to say that the early Buddhist texts inform us about the views and beliefs of the, or a, Buddhist community during some period? And if philological analysis allows us to reach further back into the past (supposing it can actually do so), does this not merely lead us back to an earlier phase of the views and beliefs of the, or a, Buddhist community? Is it not, therefore, wiser to speak about early — or even: earliest — Buddhism, and leave the Buddha out of the picture? In earlier publications I was not quite certain about this issue, and had a tendency to speak about early or earliest Buddhism, rather than about the historical Buddha.2 But closer reflection suggests that this attempt to express oneself carefully may really have the opposite effect.
