Glenn Frey

The death of Eagles co-founder Glenn Frey continues an horrendous run of music icons passing away in recent times. David Bowie, Scott Weiland, Lemmy Kilmister and Natalie Cole are just the bigger names. These are now joined by Glenn who died from complications arising from rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and pneumonia. He formed Eagles in 1971 with Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner. They became one of the biggest-selling bands of the 1970s with six US chart-topping albums, five number one singles and total sales of well over 150 million records. Glenn wrote or co-wrote many of the band’s biggest hits. Hotel California, which is said to be played on a radio station somewhere in the world every second of every day, is generally regarded as their most popular song. But when asked which song he would play if he knew he only had five minutes to live, Glenn revealed his all-time favourite Eagles track to be One of These Nights. At 156 minutes, The Revenant is a challenge. At 187 minutes, The Hateful Eight is only to be approached with full stomach and empty bladder. It’s time film-makers realised epic doesn’t have to mean eternal, writes Alex Hess

he Revenant, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Oscar-hunting epic, is a fi lm that does many unique and wonderful thinTgs, but perhaps its greatest feat is how it manages to be simultaneously breathtaking and yawn-inducing. Make no mistake: the fi lm contains sensational moments. But at heart it’s a simple man-v-nature yarn that runs along much the same lines as Touching the Void, All Is Lost or Gravity. The diff erence is that the latter three all had the good sense to appreciate that nerve- shredding intensity tends to sag at around the 100-minute mark. The Revenant obliges us to sit watching Leonardo DiCaprio’s beard accumulate frost — as fi ne a sight as that is — for over two and a half hours before the credits roll. It is symptomatic of a trend. Only two of this year’s best-picture Oscar nominees come in at under two hours (the shortest, Brooklyn, doing so by just eight minutes) — and yet 2016’s batch feels charitably short compared with recent others. How does media aff ect our consciousness? Can an image be owned?” Tuymans’s paintings are always informed by a subtext that concerns imaging technologies, feels Avgikos. The “photographic,” a notational device that can suggest vague familiarity even when enigma prevails, is one of the ways we locate ourselves in his work, he says. “Compared with generations of analogue culture, the digital era is characterised by unprecedented complexity, rampant uncertainty, and hypermobility,” Avgikos explains, “Today, it seems as if every other person uses a cellphone and billions are online. Digital media enable us to do things we couldn’t imagine 20 years ago. One result is that it is increasingly hard, if not nearly impossible, for many people to fully grasp what is going on. Tuymans’s art has always pivoted on this concern.” Avgikos continues, “The cross-border operations of Tuymans’ paintings raise important questions about global power structures, politics, and economics.
