  • D.O. Dominio De Valdepusa
    -D.O. Dominio de Valdepusa Dominio de Valdepusa, located in the Toledo municipality of Malpica de Tajo, has belonged to Carlos Falcó’s, the Marques de Griñón’s, family since 1292. In 2002 this property was granted the first ‘pago’ Denomination of Origin by the Spanish State. In 2003 the European Union convalidated this recognition, making Dominio de Valdepusa the first Spanish estate to receive a recognition only previously obtained by legendary vineyards such as Romanée Conti (Burgundy) or Sassicaia (Toscana). Dominio de Valdepusa is a unique vineyard occupying 52ha, including the original vineyard of (14 ha) Cabernet Sauvignon which planted in 1974. Since 1991, this has been progressively increased with Syrah and Petit Verdot varieties, both pioneers in Spain, and Graciano. The main house and winery of Dominio de Valdepusa are set in historical 18th century buildings. The old Casa de Labor (Workhouse) acts as a visit centre today, includes an avant-garde design kitchen, 4 dining rooms, and tasting rooms with a joint capacity of up to 120 people, likewise Dominio management offices. The central courtyard of classic Toledan architecture like the rest of the winery houses a grape press inaugurated by the Prince of Asturias and Duke and Duchess of Lugo, where visitors can experience traditional grape pressing in the grape-picking season. The vineyard landscape includes large iberian oaks (Quercus Ilex); its paths are lined with cypresses, rosebushes and rows of lavender. Between the house and winery a botanic garden has been planted since 2000 with over 300 species, mainly Mediterranean of origin. Their current production of 350,000 bottles, advised by the prestigious Bordeaux oenologist Michel Rolland, centres exclusively on red wines produced for grapes from our own vineyards.

Two recent publications, each examining more than 1000 wine grape varieties, have expanded the field not only for the academic researcher1 but also for the consumer.2 The first publication has already been discussed in an editorial in this journal,3 but the latter is a newly published tome of more than 1200 pages authored by two distinguished Masters of Wine from the UK, Jancis Robinson and Julia Harding, and by the academic researcher José Vouillamoz from the University of Neuchatel, For personal use only. Neuchatel, Switzerland , who is responsible for the Swiss Vitis Microsatellite Database (SVMD). The new book covers not only the genetics of wine grapes but also viticultural characteristics, places of cultivation, and the various wines and their taste. Some of these factors are more important to wine consumers than to researchers. Both publications show that inbreeding has limited wine grapes to a relatively small number of varieties sharing many incestuous relationships. Myles et al1 found that 75% of the 950 Vitis vinifera and 59 Vitis sylvestris varieties which they examined have direct family connections as parents, siblings, or offspring.

    Golfo 9 L.2007 Winery: Golfo Region: Vino de Mesa Grapes: 31% Tempranillo, 26% Garnacha, 8% Merlot, 8% Bobal and 5.4% each of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Graciano, Ca- bernet Franc and Tinta de Toro Winery: A joint venture between 9 winemakers, showcasing 9 regions and 9 varieties. This third bottling of Golfo incorporates wine from the following wineries: Cillar de Silos (Tempranillo, Ribera del Duero), Bodegas Ada (Garnacha, Navarra), Chateau Tours du Pas Saint-George (Merlot, St. Emilion), Bodegas Mustiguillo (Bobal, Utiel-Requena), Abadía Retuerta (Petit Verdot, Sardon del Duero), Viña Izadi (Graciano, Rioja), Bodegas Marqués de Griñón (Caber- net Sauvignon, Dominio de Valdepusa), Bodegas Bernabé Navarro (Cabernet Franc, Alicante), and Bodegas Frontaura (Tinta de Toro, Toro). Wine: A joint venture between 9 winemakers, showcasing 9 regions and 9 varieties. 50% of the wine is a blend in equal proportion of each of the wines while the other 50% of the wine is composed of a blend that is assembled and voted upon by all of the contributing winemakers. The voting occurs ~1 year after the vintage with the young wines already having seen ~12 months in oak barrels. Barrels were donated by Demptos, Radoux, Quercus and Cadus. Pro- ceeds of the sale of the wine will be contributed to the construction of a sub-terranean winery and support for a small community in Northern Kenya. The community has 300 fruit trees and 3600 grape vines planted of Syrah, Garnacha, Alicante and Moscatel. The wine is made all from fruit from the 2007 vintage but is not allowed to be labeled as a vintage wine given its Vino de Mesa designation.
