    1 Le Casino Luxembourg – reflet de valeurs de société Robert L. Philippart La réfection de la salle dite « Saint-Hubert » touche directement à la structure et à l’histoire d’un immeuble qui marque – tant par son architecture, sa situation et ses activités – le centre de la ville de Luxembourg. L’occasion est donnée pour jeter un regard sur l’histoire de cet édifice à caractère représentatif. Comprendre son histoire, la placer dans son contexte, sans tomber dans l’anecdotique ou la nostalgie d’une époque, permet peut-être de dégager des pistes de développement du site dans la continuité. Pourquoi un Casino ? L’idée de constituer, en date du 1er septembre 1880, une société anonyme au nom de « Casino de Luxembourg 1 » exprimait la volonté du milieu des affaires de créer, à l’écart actif de la ville, un lieu de détente, destiné à favoriser et à développer la sociabilité entre notables assujettis au cens électoral et détenant ainsi le pouvoir politique en exclusivité. En absence de licences accordées aux jeux de hasard, le terme de « casino » prend ici entièrement son sens de « club ». L’établissement est d’abord une salle des fêtes et de spectacles, comprenant par ailleurs un salon de lecture, un restaurant avec terrasse et jardin, une salle de billard et un jeu de quilles. Une première « Société du Casino » avait déjà vu le jour en 1818. Elle regroupait des bourgeois et des membres de la garnison. Cette association fut dissoute en 18262. La même année, l’association « Cercle littéraire » allait temporairement reprendre la relève3. Le 18 novembre 1858 fut créée la « Société Anonyme du Casino de Luxembourg » pour servir de pendant au Casino militaire de la garnison.
