Thus, DIVA continues to build on a concept that is also the starting point of the DIVA collection presentation, A Brilliant Story. Internationally acclaimed art dealer and interior designer Axel Vervoordt is the first to present his personal Room of Wonder at DIVA. AXEL VERVOORDT ON HIS ROOM OF WONDER “A Room of Wonder is there to create ‘wonder’, to inspire, to discover things that surprise and fascinate. I myself always try to look at art as a child, without prejudice or foreknowledge, and I like to be surprised by what my senses intuitively present to me. Only then do I want to acquire knowledge about the object, the origin, the history, the artist and the circumstances in which it was made. Such deeper knowledge often leads to even greater wonder and fascination. As a collector, I’ve always looked for the dialogue between objects that reinforces their intrinsic power. In a traditional cabinet of wonders, all sorts of artefacts, exceptional naturalia and innovative scientific instruments were brought together to impress and to be studied.

Pen and brown ink, washed with bistre, 216 x 555 mm, signed and dated: Martijn hemskeric 1535 INTRODUCTION During the sixteenth century, many Netherlandish artists1 made a study trip to Italy, and more in particular to Rome, mainly as a completion of the artistic education they had started in their native country. Having arrived in the southern peninsula, they looked for prestigious commissions or employment in an Italian workshop. Many artists returned home after some years, others built up a life and career in the city and stayed. It has been generally acknowledged that northern artists travelled to Italy to learn from Antiquity and their contemporary Italian masters and that in Rome in particular, they made drawings of all the things they admired in the city which they could use in their work. Nonetheless, it remains questionable to what extent and for which purposes northern artists have collected visual material in Rome. Furthermore, it is certainly not clear if the practice of drawing ‘from nature’ may be regarded as one of the main reasons for sixteenth century northern artists to set off for a journey southwards.

  • Dutch Old Master Paintings in the New Bedford Whaling Museum Submitted by Stuart M
Dutch Old Master Paintings in the New Bedford Whaling Museum submitted by Stuart M. Frank, Senior Curator Emeritus, February 2013 THE COLLECTION The Kendall whaling collection was founded by Henry P. Kendall (1879-1959) about the time he graduated from Amherst College in 1899. Over the next two or three decades, his success as a manufacturer of medical textiles provided the wherewithal to increase his collecting purview, so that his initial concentration upon harpoons and whalecraft led ultimately, and perhaps inevitably to a broader appreciation of whaling history, technology, and art on an international scale. His marriage to Evelyn Louise Way (1894-1979) in the 1920s enhanced their mutual interest in the fine arts, decorative arts, and scrimshaw, and led to buying trips to England, Holland, and, later, Japan. After loaning components of their ever-expanding collection for exhibition at MIT and the Peabody Museum of Salem, the couple founded the Kendall Whaling Museum in Sharon, Massachusetts, in 1955, with the help and advice of M.V. Brewington, then Curator of Maritime History at the Peabody; William H. Tripp, a whaling collector himself and Curator of the New Bedford Whaling Museum; and J.B. Kist, an art historian at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. By 2001, when the Kendall collection was gifted to the New Bedford Whaling Museum, it held the world’s largest and most comprehensive gathering of American, European, and Japanese whaling prints, American and European whaling paintings, Japanese whaling scrolls, and a wide assortment of whaling logbooks and journals second only to (and only slightly smaller than) that already in the New Bedford Whaling Museum.

Within this visual trend, the vast majority of such paintings present the sitters in outdoor environs rather than the domestic sphere. This dissertation focuses on such images and adopts the term “family-landscape portrait” to highlight the hybrid nature of the images that commemorate a particular family within a specific locale. I consider the particularities of seventeenth-century Dutch family-landscape portraiture as a separate pictorial genre and attend to the ways in which these images construct identity and generate meaning, including through the blending of portraiture and landscape conventions. In order to investigate the complex meanings of family-landscape portraits, this dissertation will consider the images from the perspective of the biographical circumstances of the sitters’ lives; contemporary cultural, socioeconomic and political issues that inflect the choice of symbols or locale; and the pictorial traditions from which the images stem.
