In his teens, North “2unes” Woodall studied the playing styles of Ernie Isley, Santana, and Joe Walsh, among other R&B, funk, rock, and pop music styles. Hard work, determination, and a natural gift paid off and as a result of his exceptional proficiency with the guitar, he was quickly established with popular groups in and around Dayton, Ohio, such as The Delvones and Round Trip Ticket. North has since relocated to Atlanta, Georgia and was sought to share the stage with funk masters Lakeside, The Ohio Players, Roger Troutman and Zapp, Roy Aires, Millie Jackson, Tom Brown and Will Downing. He regularly sells out venues as the audiences know that they will be highly entertained and satisfied by tight arrangements and banging guitar solos with great licks. And the blessings continued to flow. 2unes has become a staple on the Atlanta music scene appearing in venues from the Ritz Carlton to Wind-Down Wednesdays at Centennial Park, bridging the generation gap with his unique music blend of jazz, R&B, and hip-hop. “I work for the listener and my music is designed for them. It is important to me that I give them what they want.” Woodall went on to say that he defines his musical style as being like a gumbo. “I can’t be put into a box musically. I’m not one thing, but many things bringing people together from all sides of the music spectrum.” 2unes Takes It One Step At A Time “I work for the listener and my music is designed for them. Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Abstract Recognized nationally as the funk capital of the world, Dayton, Ohio takes credit for birthing important funk groups (i.e. Ohio Players, Zapp, Heatwave, and Lakeside) during the 1970s and 80s. Through a combination of ethnographic and archival research, this paper offers a pedagogical approach to Dayton funk, rooted in the styles and works of the city’s funk legacy. Drawing from fieldwork with Dayton funk musicians completed over the summer of 2019 and pedagogical theories of including black music in the school curriculum, this paper presents a pedagogical model for funk instruction that introduces the ingredients of funk (instrumentation, form, groove, and vocals) in order to enable secondary school music programs to create their own funk rooted in local history.

  • Interview with Corey Washington, Independent Scholar on Jimi Hendrix Seretha D
Williams: Interview with Corey Washington, Independent Scholar on Jimi Hend Interview with Corey Washington, Independent Scholar on Jimi Hendrix Seretha D. Williams (3/6/2019) Most people in Augusta, GA, know Corey Washington. He is a popular history teacher, beloved by his students and their parents. He is a patron of music, attending local cultural events and supporting the burgeoning live music scene in the region. He is an independent author and expert on the life and music of Jimi Hendrix. Having seen him at the Augusta Literary Festival on multiple occasions and purchased one of his books on Hendrix for a friend, I decided to reach out to Mr. Washington for an interview on Hendrix, whom scholars describe as an icon of Afrofutur- ism. 1. How did you first become interested in Jimi Hendrix? I always have to mention the name of a disgraced individual Hulk Hogan, who was later exposed as a racist. But he was the one that hipped me to Hendrix because of his ring entrance music: “Voodoo Child.” The song opened with some weird scratching sounds, which I later learned was Jimi’s pre- cursor to a DJ scratching. He was manipulating the wah-wah pedal to get those sounds from his guitar. That drew me in, and I’ve been collecting his music and researching him ever since. That was in 1996. Follow ups: Washington grew up listening to Disco, House, and Hip-Hop. Born in 1976, Washington identifies a cultural “dead spot” for Hendrix between 1976 and 1990. I asked him why he thought that was.

Abstract Since the 1920s, multiple historically specific factors led to the automobile-saturated environ- ment of Los Angeles, contributing to a car-dependent lifestyle for most of its inhabitants. With car travel as its primary mode of mobility, and as a hub of numerous cultural industries through- out the twentieth century, the city has been the breeding ground for a number of car cultures, including hot rods, custom cars, and lowriders in addition to the large output of films and music recordings produced. In rap music of the early 1990s, producer/rapper Dr. Dre’s (Andre Romelle Young) creation of a style labelled ‘G-funk’, according to him, was created and mixed specifically for listening in car stereo systems. This article provides one case study of music’s intersections with geography, both the influence of urban geography on music production and the geogra- phy of particular listening spaces.

  • The Land of Funk” Mural on Stone Street in Downtown Dayton
Presentation: The ‘Land of Funk’ Mural By Morris T. Howard, Lead Artist These are my notes from my presentation on September 13, 2018, at the University Of Dayton. The presentation is based on the completion of “The Land of Funk” mural on Stone Street in downtown Dayton. The mural honors bands of the funk era that are from Dayton, e.g., the Ohio Players, Heatwave, Lakeside, Slave, Faze-O, Sun, and Zapp featuring Roger Troutman. I realized the need for recognition of these groups after relocating back to Dayton in April 2015. My mother had taken ill, and this was the reason I initially came back. I was driving one day and stopped at the light at the intersection of Salem and Catalpa, when I noticed a mural on the side of the old Troutman studios building. It appeared to be unfinished. I became curious as to whether there were any other murals around Dayton that honored or recognized the other funk groups from the area, and I found none. As a visual artist and lover of the music, this did not sit well with me, and ideas for a mural started taking shape. With ideas now forming in my head, I went back to my youth and the times when funk music was all over the airwaves. The 1970s were “the best of times” musically here in Dayton, and I was so proud of my city. I first heard of the Ohio Players when I was about eleven or twelve years old. A classmate of mine, Ralph Middlebrook, is the son of the late Ohio Players trumpet player Ralph “Pee Wee” Middlebrook.

10/10/13 Experience Hendrix at the Fabulous Fox America's News English Experience Hendrix at the Fabulous Fox Forsyth County News (Cumming, GA) - Sunday, March 21, 2010 Readability: >12 grade level (Lexile: 1310L) Author: Ira Miller; Columnist, [email protected] Jimi Hendrix died on Sept. 18, 1970. I remember the date because that was my first birthday. And even though I can't play a lick of guitar, I have inherited a love of music. If you love music, you will love being at the Fabulous Fox on Saturday night as "Experience Hendrix" heads to Atlanta. This is the fourth edition of the biennial concert tour paying homage to the music and legacy of Jimi Hendrix. Joe Satriani, Jonny Lang, Eric Johnson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Brad Whitford (of Aerosmith), Doyle Bramhall II, Ernie Isley, Living Colour, Susan Tedeschi, Double Trouble's Chris Layton, Robert Randolph, along with original Hendrix bassist Billy Cox will be performing music written and inspired by the legend. Cox, who first befriended Hendrix when the two were in the 101st Airborne division of the US Army, played in both the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys. "It's a thrill for me to play Jimi's music for audiences now as it was in the 1960s. The Experience Hendrix tours have shown how timeless this music really is," Cox said. Featured in every show are signature songs including "Purple Haze," "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," "The Wind Cries Mary," "Little Wing" and "Red House." Kenny Wayne Shepherd, a veteran of several Experience Hendrix tours remarked: "Jimi Hendrix's music has really inspired [me] to push the limits of my own music.
