Williams: Interview with Corey Washington, Independent Scholar on Jimi Hend Interview with Corey Washington, Independent Scholar on Jimi Hendrix Seretha D. Williams (3/6/2019) Most people in Augusta, GA, know Corey Washington. He is a popular history teacher, beloved by his students and their parents. He is a patron of music, attending local cultural events and supporting the burgeoning live music scene in the region. He is an independent author and expert on the life and music of Jimi Hendrix. Having seen him at the Augusta Literary Festival on multiple occasions and purchased one of his books on Hendrix for a friend, I decided to reach out to Mr. Washington for an interview on Hendrix, whom scholars describe as an icon of Afrofutur- ism. 1. How did you first become interested in Jimi Hendrix? I always have to mention the name of a disgraced individual Hulk Hogan, who was later exposed as a racist. But he was the one that hipped me to Hendrix because of his ring entrance music: “Voodoo Child.” The song opened with some weird scratching sounds, which I later learned was Jimi’s pre- cursor to a DJ scratching. He was manipulating the wah-wah pedal to get those sounds from his guitar. That drew me in, and I’ve been collecting his music and researching him ever since. That was in 1996. Follow ups: Washington grew up listening to Disco, House, and Hip-Hop. Born in 1976, Washington identifies a cultural “dead spot” for Hendrix between 1976 and 1990. I asked him why he thought that was.

I remember the date because that was my first birthday. And even though I can't play a lick of guitar, I have inherited a love of music. If you love music, you will love being at the Fabulous Fox on Saturday night as "Experience Hendrix" heads to Atlanta. This is the fourth edition of the biennial concert tour paying homage to the music and legacy of Jimi Hendrix. Joe Satriani, Jonny Lang, Eric Johnson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Brad Whitford (of Aerosmith), Doyle Bramhall II, Ernie Isley, Living Colour, Susan Tedeschi, Double Trouble's Chris Layton, Robert Randolph, along with original Hendrix bassist Billy Cox will be performing music written and inspired by the legend. Cox, who first befriended Hendrix when the two were in the 101st Airborne division of the US Army, played in both the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys. "It's a thrill for me to play Jimi's music for audiences now as it was in the 1960s. The Experience Hendrix tours have shown how timeless this music really is," Cox said. Featured in every show are signature songs including "Purple Haze," "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," "The Wind Cries Mary," "Little Wing" and "Red House." Kenny Wayne Shepherd, a veteran of several Experience Hendrix tours remarked: "Jimi Hendrix's music has really inspired [me] to push the limits of my own music.

In his teens, North “2unes” Woodall studied the playing styles of Ernie Isley, Santana, and Joe Walsh, among other R&B, funk, rock, and pop music styles. Hard work, determination, and a natural gift paid off and as a result of his exceptional proficiency with the guitar, he was quickly established with popular groups in and around Dayton, Ohio, such as The Delvones and Round Trip Ticket. North has since relocated to Atlanta, Georgia and was sought to share the stage with funk masters Lakeside, The Ohio Players, Roger Troutman and Zapp, Roy Aires, Millie Jackson, Tom Brown and Will Downing. He regularly sells out venues as the audiences know that they will be highly entertained and satisfied by tight arrangements and banging guitar solos with great licks. And the blessings continued to flow. 2unes has become a staple on the Atlanta music scene appearing in venues from the Ritz Carlton to Wind-Down Wednesdays at Centennial Park, bridging the generation gap with his unique music blend of jazz, R&B, and hip-hop. “I work for the listener and my music is designed for them. It is important to me that I give them what they want.” Woodall went on to say that he defines his musical style as being like a gumbo.

Apollo Theater Presents Hendrix in Harlem One Night Only Concert Featuring Hendrix Contemporaries and those Inspired by his Legacy Featuring Fishbone And special guests Ernie Isley, Nona Hendryx, Saul Williams, Liv Warfield and more! Concert Chronicles the Early R&B Influences that Defined Hendrix’s Pioneering Rock Experimentation Saturday, November 26th at 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. Harlem, NY – November 1, 2016 – The Apollo Theater will celebrate the influence and legacy of Jimi Hendrix with Hendrix in Harlem, on Saturday, November 26th at 7pm and 11pm. Featuring musicians from Rock & Roll to Funk and Soul, the concert will trace the guitar genius’ early foundations in R&B he developed at the Theater, which would go on to inspire his rock innovations. For one night only, audiences will be invited to explore Hendrix’s music from the mid-1960s through his posthumously released album, First Rays of the New Rising Sun. Hendrix’s star was born on the Apollo stage, when the young musician won Amateur Night in 1964. Following his win, Hendrix played numerous Harlem clubs and appeared at the Theater as the Isley Brothers’ lead guitarist, and as sideman for Little Richard, King Curtis, and Wilson Pickett. The Jimi Hendrix Experience was formed soon thereafter in 1966, and the following year the band released its iconic album Are You Experienced. Hendrix in Harlem will feature selections from his lesser-known R&B works, classic material from the Jimi Hendrix Experience, as well as highlights from his solo work. The Apollo will bring together a diverse group of performers to reimagine the late artist’s celebrated body of work on the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Jimi Hendrix Experience and the eve of what would have been Hendrix’s 74th birthday.

ARAB TIMES, MONDAY, JUNE 28, 2021 NEWS/FEATURES 13 People & Places Art Giant Paris mural revival Rembrandt’s painting just gets bigger with AI AMSTERDAM, June 27, (AP): One of Rembrandt van Rijn’s biggest paintings just got a bit bigger. A marriage of art and artifi cial intelligence has ena- bled Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum to recreate parts of the iconic “Night Watch” painting that were snipped off 70 years after Rembrandt fi nished it. The printed strips now hang fl ush to the edges of the 1642 painting in the museum’s Honor Gallery. Their addition restores to the work the off-center focal point that that rebellious Golden Age master Rembrandt originally intended. “It can breathe now,” museum director Taco Dib- bits told The Associated Press recently. The crowded painting’s two main characters, Cap- tain Frans Banninck Cocq and Lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburch, are central in the chopped down painting. With the new digital additions — particularly a strip on the left of the painting that features two men and makes clear that a boy is looking over a balustrade — the main fi gures effectively are shifted to the right. “It really gives the painting a different dynamic,” Dibbits said. “And what it taught us is that Rembrandt never does Dibbits what you expect.” The museum always knew the original, uncut, painting was bigger, in part thanks to a far smaller copy painted at the same time that is attributed to Ger- rit Lundens.
