    About Fanjeaux, France Perched on the crest of a hill in Southwestern France, Fanjeaux is a peaceful agricultural community that traces its origins back to the Romans. According to local legend, a Roman temple to Jupiter was located where the parish church now stands. Thus the name of the town proudly reflects its Roman heritage– Fanum (temple) Jovis (Jupiter). It is hard to imagine that this sleepy little town with only 900 inhabitants was a busy commercial and social center of 3,000 people during the time of Saint Dominic. When he arrived on foot with the Bishop of Osma in 1206, Fanjeaux’s narrow streets must have been filled with peddlers, pilgrims, farmers and even soldiers. The women would gather to wash their clothes on the stones at the edge of a spring where a washing place still stands today. The church we see today had not yet been built. According to the inscription on a stone on the south facing outer wall, the church was constructed between 1278 and 1281, after Saint Dominic’s death. You should take a walk to see the church after dark when its octagonal bell tower and stone spire, crowned with an orb, are illuminated by warm orange lights. This thick-walled, rectangular stone church is an example of the local Romanesque style and has an early Gothic front portal or door (the rounded Romanesque arch is slightly pointed at the top). The interior of the church was modernized in the 18th century and is Baroque in style, but the church still houses unusual reliquaries and statues from the 13th through 16th centuries.

    George Jochnowitz Judeo-Provençal in Southern France 1 Brief introduction Judeo-Provençal is also known as Judeo-Occitan, Judéo-Comtadin, Hébraïco- Comtadin, Hébraïco-Provençal, Shuadit, Chouadit, Chouadite, Chuadit, and Chuadite. It is the Jewish analog of Provençal and is therefore a Romance lan- guage. The age of the language is a matter of dispute, as is the case with other Judeo-Romance languages. It was spoken in only four towns in southern France: Avignon, Cavaillon, Caprentras, and l’Isle-sur-Sorgue. A women’s prayer book, some poems, and a play are the sources of the medieval language, and transcrip- tions of Passover songs and theatrical representations are the sources for the modern language. In addition, my own interviews in 1968 with the language’s last known speaker, Armand Lunel, provide data (Jochnowitz 1978, 1985). Lunel, who learned the language from his grandparents, not his parents, did not have occasion to converse in it. Judeo-Provençal/Shuadit is now extinct, since Armand Lunel died in 1977. Sometimes Jewish languages have a name meaning “Jewish,” such as Yiddish or Judezmo – from Hebrew Yehudit or other forms of Yehuda. This is the case with Shuadit, due to a sound change of /y/ to [š]. I use the name Judeo-Provençal for the medieval language and Shuadit for the modern language. 2 Historical background 2.1 Speaker community: Settlement, documentation Jews had lived in Provence at least as early as the first century CE. They were officially expelled from France in 1306, readmitted in 1315, expelled again in 1322, readmitted in 1359, and expelled in 1394 for a period that lasted until the French Revolution.

French becomes in England the language of the ruling classes and commerce. William strengthened royal power. Surveyed England’s landed property and other wealth and used this information to collect taxes. He compelled all feudal lords to pledge him direct allegiance. For the next 200 years, the Norman kings of England remained feudal lords over much French territory. By the 13th century, England still had one small possession in France – Gascony. King Philip of France seized Gascony in 1337 and Edward III of England declared war on Philip. Repeated English Victories War began with a feudal knightly enthusiasm. The French army still relied on heavily armored noble cavalry and the crossbow. The English relied more on large numbers of paid foot soldiers. The English long bow had a larger range and greater speed. great English victories at Crecy in 1346, Poitiers in 1356 and Agincourt(Henry V) in 1415. These were crushing defeats for the French. At Agincourt, 1,500 French nobles were killed. The English were masters of northern France. English Gains in France The French Rally Late in the war, the English lost their military advantage. They met their final defeat when the French armies, inspired by Joan of Arc, ended the English siege of the city of Orleans and after several notable victories drove the English from France.

(Signature) ……………………………………………………………………………… 2 Abstract The aim of this study is to investigate the process of accent levelling in the Regional French of Alsace and its relationship with the social variables of age, gender, social class, urban or rural origin of speakers and feelings of regional attachment. Accent levelling, which can be defined as the process of speakers abandoning local phonological forms in favour of supralocal variants, has been the focus of much recent sociolinguistic research on British English, French and other languages. Since knowledge of Alsatian (a Germanic language spoken in Alsace) is decreasing, it is possible that the resulting lack of interference between Alsatian and French is leading to levelling of the traditional accent features of Alsatian Regional French. In order to provide data for this research project, sociolinguistic interviews were conducted and written questionnaires used in Strasbourg and in the village of Helsheim (a fictional name used for reasons of confidentiality) with 56 informants. The data obtained were then subjected to quantitative analysis with regard to the linguistic variables of aspirate h (which can be realised as a supralocal zero variant or as a regional [h] variant) and the devoicing of canonically voiced plosives and fricatives (for example, sage pronounced [saʃ]).

    Taxes, National Identity, and Nation Building: Evidence from France∗ Noel D. Johnsony George Mason University This Version: October 2, 2015 Abstract We show that increases in state capacity can lower the collective action costs associated with political and economic exchange by encouraging the formation of a common identity. We test this by exploiting the fact that the French Monarchy was more successful in substituting its fiscal and legal institutions for those of the medieval seigneurial regime within an area of the country known as the Cinq Grosses Fermes (CGF). Disaggregated data from the 1789 Cahiers de Doléances confirm that regions just inside the CGF were more likely than regions just out- side the CGF to identify themselves with market enhancing national institutions. Written communication was needed by some however and such organisations and bodies had their own courier systems for such purposes – the monarch, universities, international merchants and the church being the main ones. To employ one’s own messengers was expensive and the Royal post slowly began to allow others to use its couriers and so to contribute to its costs. This was the beginning of a national postal service and in France existed alongside private courier services well into the seventeenth century. A post office existed in the capital from 1576 in the rue Saint Jacques on the left bank and later on the right bank near where it is today. At the same date a Royal edict authorised the public to use La Poste when the Court was in correspondence with provincial Parlements. The first tariff to cover the whole country dates from 1627 and simply listed four destinations and five towns – Bordeaux, Lyon, Toulouse and Dijon and Macon – with specific rates to each from Paris. By 1644 the growth of the postal service required more officials to run it and with that an increase in rates.

The ten essays collected here represent the fruits of a conference held in Oxford in 2011 at the end of the first of three projects to complete the publication of the Gascon Rolls. Although more evidence survives in local archives than one might initially suppose, the rolls matter because, together with records from the exchequer, they form the main source for Plantagenet rule in Gascony. The importance of these “office copies” of business emanating from the English royal chancery results from the almost total loss of the originals in two major disasters; the thirteenth-century archives, evacuated to London on the outbreak of war in 1294, were abandoned on the Isle of Oléron by sailors aggrieved by their unpaid wages, while later records, taken to Paris, were destroyed by fire in the eighteenth century. There is thus much to celebrate in making the remaining manuscript Gascon Rolls available in print and online. The editor, Guilhem Pépin, provides a clear and useful introduction giving an overview of Anglo- Gascon historiography and the long, drawn-out process of publishing the actual rolls; the first volume appeared as long ago as 1885. As these essays show, the enterprise is injecting new life into Anglo- Gascon scholarship with historians taking advantage of greater ease of access.
