Amongst the great multitude of saints that sing from heaven to the glory of God, these two Apostles stand in a unique and incomparable place.     24th January 2021 Luke 14 Fr Chrysostom MacDonnell ‘I am the foremost of sinners; but I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display His perfect patience for an example to those who were to believe in Him for eternal life.’ So writes the apostle Paul to St Timothy, and one might be forgiven for thinking that the blessed apostle is showing a certain egotism here. He calls himself the foremost; worthy of God’s perfect patience; that God has specially chosen him, Paul, as an example of Divine mercy. But on closer examination we realise that this is, in fact, an expression of St Paul’s real humility, for looking back on his own experience he was able to analyse his life through the mind of Christ; to see and examine himself through God’s eyes: and change his mind. It was only because he now knew himself to have been the foremost of sinners, as he says; only because he was, in his old life, spiritually estranged from God; the very last in line to receive any grace from God, that when he did encounter the Christ, he stood amazed! His whole mind, his whole world, his whole purpose had been changed now and, as an apostle, he was an icon of repentance, an image to bring others to the same eternal life. This is what we mean by repentance, this change of mind about our life, not just feelings of shame for past actions, but the renewal of the mind.

There’s no need to make a count of the number of Christians who hold such views. All we need to do is look at their expressions. These are people who want to have a relationship with the Church. But with what Church? Certainly not with the Church that’s founded on the Body and Blood of Christ. People often want the Church from their own personal viewpoint. They want a Church that fits in with what they can get their minds around. They want a Church that’s cut and dried to their own cloth. In this egocentric position, even the holy and sacred things of the Church are objectivized and don’t escape the mental processes of these people, this mistake proliferates until it becomes blasphemy against the Holy Sacraments and the Body and Blood of Christ.

    The Advent wreath, or Advent crown, is a Christian tradition that symbolizes the passage of the four weeks of Advent. It is usually a horizontal evergreen wreath with four candles and often, a fifth, white candle in the center. Beginning with the First Sunday of Advent, the lighting of a candle can be accompanied by a Bible reading, devotional time and prayers.[4][5] An additional candle is lit during each subsequent week until, by the last Sunday before Christmas, all four candles are lit. Many Advent wreaths include a fifth, Christ candle which is lit at Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.[6] The custom is observed both in family settings and at public church services. • The Rosary is a series of prayers. When Christian people pray the Rosary they meditate on (think about) the life of Jesus. It is mainly Catholics who use the Rosary to reflect on the important parts of the life of Jesus. To pray the rosary Christians use a Rosary. A Rosary is a string of beads with a crucifix. A short string of five beads is attached to the crucifix which leads to a large circular strip of beads made of five sets of one large bead and ten smaller beads, called decades. These are used to help keep count. • In many Christian churches, Palm Sunday includes a procession of the assembled worshipers carrying palms, representing the palm branches the crowd scattered in front of Jesus as he rode into Jerusalem. Censers are any type of vessels made for burning incense. These vessels vary greatly in size, form, and material of construction.

Why is this unsolved? It is unsolved because the concept of a “Holy Grail” is but a mythology that has been popularized by Arthurian Legend as well as more recent works such as Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and The DaVinci Code. What is the Legend? • The Holy Grail is traditionally thought to be the cup that Jesus drank from at the Last Supper and that Joseph of Arimathea used to collect Jesus’s blood at his crucifixion. • Some Arthurian (i.e. King Arthur) tales claimed that Joseph of Arimathea brought the Grail to Glastonbury in England. One legend has it that on the spot where he buried the Grail, the water runs red because it travels through Christ’s blood. • Others believed the Knights Templar, a medieval order that protected pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land, seized the Holy Grail from the Temple Mount during the Crusades and secreted it away. • The mythical literary figure, King Arthur, was said to coordinate great spiritual expeditions to search for the enigmatic relic. Legends hold that the Grail had the power to heal all wounds, deliver eternal youth and grant everlasting happiness.
