A Brief Life of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke From The Synopsis of the Hieromartyr Dorotheos (June 5th), The Bishop of Tyre (+362) Saint Luke the Evangelist was a native of Antioch and a physician by pro- fession. He wrote the Gospel which bears his name by the command of the holy Apostle Peter, and the Acts of the Apostles by the command of the holy Apostle Paul. He was one of the seventy and travelled with the holy apostles, and especially with Saint Paul, who mentions him in his Epistle, saying, “Luke, the beloved physician, greets you” (Colossians 4:14). Saint Luke died a martyr’s death in Ephesus and was buried there. His relics were later transferred to the city of Constantinople, together with those of the holy Apostles Andrew and Timothy, during the time of the Emperor Constantius, the son of Constantine the Great. Another Life of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke From the Preface of Saint Theophylact (December 31st) of Ochrid (+1108) To his Explanation of the Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke The divine Luke, an Antiochian and a physician, had a great knowledge of natural philosophy; but he was also much practiced in Hebrew learning. He lived in Jerusalem at the time when our Lord was teaching, so that some say that he himself became one of the seventy apostles, and together with Cleopas, met the Lord after He rose from the dead (Luke 24:13-35).
