PATRICIA CLARE WHEELER-CONDON A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY, TORONTO, ONTARIO APRIL, 2013 © Patricia Wheeler-Condon, 2013 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the musical features of, and circumstances surrounding, the film score composed in 1971 by Henry Mancini for director Alfred Hitchcock's ( penultimate work, Frenzy. Mancini's music was rejected by Hitchcock, and replaced with a markedly different work written by British composer Ron Goodwin. A summation of characteristic traits emerging from Mancini's compositional style is herewith considered, as recurring features found in his thematic writing - aspects of melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre, and form-were most apparent to the non-musician film directors who engaged his services. This summation also includes an examination oft4e composer's dramatic underscore writing; an aspect of film music often overlooked in its minutiae by viewers and filmmakers alike, and, in the case of Mancini's Frenzy music, characteristic of his scores for Laslo Bene_dek's 1971 production, The Night Visitor, and Terrence Young's Wait Until Dark, from 1967. Mancini's Frenzy cue sheets, holograph, and recording were supplied by the composer's estate, allowing for an analysis which considers cue placement and length, systems of pitch and rhythmic organisation, aspects of arrangement and orchestration, and conducting and recording methods as practised by this composer. A comparison to the Goodwin score, reproduced by way of transcription from the film, is undertaken in order to explore aspects of filmic point-of-view as they play on the composer of its accompanying music, and to attempt a rationalisation of .Hitchcock's displeasure with Mancini's music. -

Alfred Hitchcock continued his negotiations for over five decades, and for his efforts, film studies found a touch of much needed tongue-in-cheek. Acknowledgements I first discovered my love of classical Hollywood cinema when I moved to Austin, Texas in 2003 to pursue my bachelor’s in Radio-Television-Film at the University of Texas. Here, I discovered that not only were black and white films far from naïve and unsophisticated, but that it was still possible to view these films on a big screen, in 30mm, with a full audience in attendance: the Paramount, the Alamo Drafthouse, and the Dobie provided excellent programming for an aspiring cinephile year round. Next, I became aware that not only were older films amazing and physically accessible, but that legitimate careers in programming, preserving, studying and teaching classical films existed. -

The Murderer in the Garden: Something Rotten in Alfred Hitchcock’s Frenzy K. Brenna Wardell In 1733, the English artist William Hogarth completed a series of paintings titled A Rake’s Progress, a sequel to his previous series, A Harlot’s Progress (1731–32). In A Rake’s Progress, Hogarth dramatizes the misadventures of young Tom Rakewell, who loses his money, health, and sanity in London. In the third painting, as Rakewell’s downward “progress” becomes explicit, Hogarth shows him in a tavern, his body drunkenly splayed over a chair while a prostitute expertly steals from him. The painting’s mise-en-scène conveys not only Rakewell’s individual dissolution but general chaos and decay, from the broken crockery, discarded clothing, and quarrelling customers to the marks on many of the women’s faces— possibly beauty spots, but also potential indications of venereal disease, as Jenny Uglow has argued, thereby foreshadowing Rakewell’s future of disease and madness (252-253). In the background a prankster sets fre to a map of the world—her act hinting at universal destruction. That the tavern pictured was a real location—the Rose Tavern in London’s Covent Garden—created an immediate jolt of reality for viewers of A Rake’s Progress while reinforcing Rakewell’s danger: the Rose, and Covent Garden as a whole, was infamous for vice and criminal activity. The Garden’s long, diverse history suffuses the Rose painting—a history including serving as a convent garden, fashionable residence, center of a fruit and vegetable market, and the locale of entertainments from theatres to brothels. -

In discovering his wife’s lover, Milo (Elijah Alexander), Mr. Wyke devises a devious plan to humiliate him. But even the best laid plans can go astray when the police arrive and a new game begins — a game where rules don’t apply and the stakes are life or death. At the newspaper's height, circulation was approximatly 18,000 copies. The original editorial collective included Denis Lemon (editor), Martin Corbett - who later was an active member of ACT UP, David Seligman, a founder member of the London Gay Switchboard collective, Ian Dunn of the Scottish Minorities Group, Glenys Parry (national chair of CHE), Suki J. Pitcher, and Doug Pollard, who later went on to launch the weekly gay newspaper, Gay Week (affectionately known as Gweek). Amongst Gay News' early "Special Friends" were Graham Chapman of Monty Python's Flying Circus, his partner David Sherlock, and Antony Grey, secretary of the UK Homosexual Law Reform Society from 1962 to 1970. Gay News was the response to a nationwide demand by lesbians and gay men for news of the burgeoning liberation movement. The paper played a pivotal role in the struggle for gay rights in the 1970s in the UK. It was described by Alison Hennegan (who joined the newspaper as Assistant Features Editor and Literary Editor in June 1977) as the movement's "debating chamber". -

It may be helpful to discuss what they can expect or to have other students relay their own experiences about theatre productions they have seen. Another important point to review is the difference between live theatre and watching a movie or television. N o i s e Live theatre means live actors who can hear not only what is happening on the stage, but in the audience as well. While laughter and applause at appropriate times are appreciated by the actors, excessive noise and talking is not. Any sort of distracting noise—humming, sighing, chewing gum, or carrying electronic devices—is discouraged. Cell phones, chiming watches and pagers must be turned off during the performance . A p p l a u s e Applause is used to acknowledge the performers and to voice appreciation or approval. Traditionally, applause comes before intermission and at the performance’s conclusion. These intervals are usually signaled by dimming the lights on stage and bringing up the house lights. A curtain call in which the cast returns to the stage for bows usually follows a performance. Applause is not expected every time the lights are dimmed or between scenes. -
