OCCASIONAL PAPER 74 Call the Hands Issue No. 39 March 2020 World War 2 Arrived on the Australian Mainland: Thursday 19th February 1942 By Dennis J Weatherall JP TM AFAITT(L) LSM – Volunteer Researcher Dennis Weatherall attended the recent 78th Anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin, also known as the “Battle of Darwin”, by Japanese Imperial Forces on Thursday 19th February 1942. The air raid siren sounded at exactly 09:58 - war had arrived in Australia. He asks why more Australians don’t know about the continuous attacks that started on that day and continued until 12th November 1943 - some 21 months. In this paper Dennis provides and overview of the attacks and naval losses in more detail. Darwin, has changed much since my last visit some 38 years ago and it is dramatically different to the Darwin of 1942 which bore the brunt of the first ever attack by a foreign power on Australian soil. Why didn’t we know they were coming? Was our intelligence so bad or were we too complacent in 1942? The Government of the day had anticipated the Japanese would push south but “when” was the big question. Evacuations of civilians had already started by February 1942. On the morning of the fateful day there were many ships, both Naval and Merchant men, in the Port of Darwin along with a QANTAS flying boat “Camilla” and three Consolidated PBY Catalina flying boats of the USN, when 188 Japanese aircraft of various types, 36 Zero fighters, 71 dive bombers and 81 medium attack bombers commenced their first raid.

  • The Darwin Commemorative Wall Quilt
The Darwin Commemorative Wall Quilt Index to the location of names on the quilt Compiled by Tony Suttor Northern Territory Library Parliament House, Darwin 1995 @ 1994 Tony Suttor The Darwin Commemorative Wall Quilt The Darwin Commemorative Wall Quilt is one of the many works of art which adorn the Northern Territory Library in its home in Parliament House, Darwin. It contains about 1600 patches recording almost 2000 names of people who spent time in the Northern Territory during the War years. Among their number are civilians, defence personnel, nurses, police, evacuees, Commonwealth and North Australia Railway volunteers, members of the Civil Construction Corps, members of various religious orders and others. These patches were signed by people who visited the Northern Territory during 1992, the 50th Anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin, and people who wrote from interstate or overseas during that year. Names on the quilt are listed alphabetically by surname in this document to help pinpoint the location of an particular patch. The Quilt measures almost five metres by three, and is designed to resemble a typical porcellanite stone wall as can still be seen in some old Darwin Buildings. In addition to the names on the Quilt there are a nurse’s colour patch, the emblem of the Civil Construction Corps and twenty pictures of sites which would have been familiar to people in Darwin at the time. Some of the buildings can still be seen today, whereas others have disappeared as a result of enemy action, Cyclone Tracy or the indomitable march of progress. The illustrations on the Quilt were based on photographs taken during the war years; these photographs are now held in the Northern Territory Collection, PictureNT.

It has been a source of real pleasure to me to read carefully the proofs of Mrs. Butler’s “ Mission Studies.” In so doing I have been impressed with the wide range of information embraced in this unpretending but val¬ uable volume, and with the painstaking accuracy of the author. There can be no vital and fruitful inter¬ est in any subject that does not spring out of knowl¬ edge. The history of Christian missions is scattered about in many books, such as general Church histories, biographies of missionaries, and the reports of various boards and societies. With the best intentions, many inquirers are unable to secure comprehensive and relia¬ ble information concerning the work of the Christian Church in the conversion of the world. Mrs. Butler has now supplied our pastors and the zealous women of the auxiliaries of our Woman’s Foreign Missionary Board throughout the Church with the very manual they need, both for their own edification and for the instruction of others.

(INPEX) has proposed to construct a natural gas pipeline and LNG Plant within Darwin Harbour as part of the Ichthys Gas Field Development Project. The proposed project has the potential to impact submerged cultural heritage protected by Northern Territory and Australian cultural heritage law and by United States (U.S.) laws, in the case of sunken military craft originally of U.S. origin. The project area consists of a gas pipeline construction corridor, LNG harbour facilities development areas, and the offshore spoil disposal area. It is divided into nine survey blocks, denoted Blocks 1 through 9 and Dredge Spoil Area. Blocks 1 through 5 are located near or adjacent to Blaydin Point, Block 6 extends west from the Wickham Point shoreline. Block 7 slightly overlaps Block 6 and comprises the majority of the pipeline route as it exits Darwin Harbour.
