Terima kasih & salam. *** Perang Laut Jawa (2) Manuver Penghindaran Gagah berani 14 kapal sekutu nekat mencegat Jepang yang lebih digdaya, awalnya 5 penjelajah, dan 9 destroyer, tapi kemudian kekuatannya melemah dan melemah terus... Tiga destroyer sudah tenggelam: Kortenaer, Electra, dan belakangan Jupiter yang kena ranjau sendiri. Dua lainnya sudah mundur dalam keadaan rusak: penjelajah Exeter dan destroyer Witte de With, lalu empat mundur karena kehabisan bbm, yaitu empat penjelajah Amerika dari DesRon 58. Satu lagi, Encounter, mundur karena menyelamatkan korban selamat dari Kortenaer. Sempat muncul kapal selam Amerika, tapi cuma menyelamatkan penyintas Electra, lalu balik ke Surabaya lagi. Jadi di gelombang keduanya, yang bertempur tinggal empat: De Ruyter, Perth, Houston, dan Java.. tapi kemudian, Java lenyap dihantam torpedo, disusul oleh De Ruyter yang kena torpedo juga. Kondisi De Ruyter amat genting. Segera muncul perintah abandon ship dan Kapten Lacomblé yang mengendalikan De Ruyter.. cuma bisa mendesis saja. "Sekarang semua selesai..." Tapi bagi Perth dan Houston, urusan belum selesai. Saat De Ruyter lumpuh, posisinya malang di depan Perth dan Houston yang sedang ngebut. Bagi Kapten Rooks di Houston yang agak jauh di belakang, keputusannya mudah. Houston segera diputar arah kanan, masih ada ruang sekitar 90 meter dari sisi kanan sang flagship yang lumpuh, lalu dia menjauh ke tenggara. Houston selamat! Bagi Kapten Waller di Perth, mestinya nikung kanan juga lebih enak.. tapi karena ada Houston,.. kalau Perth main motong kanan, maka Houston perlu nikung lebih tajam lagi, atau tabrakan dalam kecepatan tinggi kedua kapal penjelajah yang masih tersisa itu. Jadi,.. untuk menghindar nubruk De Ruyter di depannya, arah utara, Perth menikung setajam mungkin ke arah sebaliknya. Ke kiri! Waller sampai harus mematikan salah satu mesinnya agar sisi kanan bisa menekuk balik ke kiri. Begitu dekatnya Perth dengan De Ruyter, sampai bau cat kebakar dan mayat kebakar sampai tercium. Toh ujungnya dia lolos dari tubrukan dengan sang flagship. Dan mengarah ke timur laut. Cuma konsekuensinya menjadi menarik! Di arah timur laut itu... ada penjelajah-penjelajah dari Sentai-5! "Halo coy!" "Halo juga!" Para awaknya bisa melihat dentuman-dentuman di De Ruyter dan Java di sela-sela hujan, dan rame-rame membahanakan teriakan 'banzai!" ke udara. Yang teriak "Hidup Persib!" tidak ada. Laksamana Takagi bertekad mengakhiri nasih penjelajah Belanda itu. Dia arahkan Nachi dan Haguro ke timur laut, tapi kata Hara itu kesalahan terakhir Takagi dalam pertempuran tersebut. Tidak jelas alasannya mengapa mengarah ke sana. Mungkin dia sempat melihat Perth, tercahayai dari belakang oleh De Ruyter yang membara. Lalu ingin mengubernya. Tapi Kapten Waller tidak berniat bablas terus arah timur laut. Hilanglah kesempatan Sentai 5 untuk menikam 2 penjelajah tersisa. Perth diputar balik arah lagi, kemungkinan balik kiri, supaya siluetnya tidak gamblang di hadapan musuhnya. Perth lalu mengarah ke belakang sang flagship rongsok itu. Dia lambatkan lajunya sedikit. Kemungkinan, saat itu Houston sudah bablas lebih jauh ke tenggara, dan mungkin juga melambatkan kecepatan lalu mungkin menikung kiri. Kedua kapten, Waller dan Rooks tentu ingin mencek De Ruyter dan coba mencari tahu, Doorman maunya apa. Di awal, komandan Doorman sudah bilang bahwa yang lumpuh, ditinggalkan saja pada belas kasihan musuh, tetapi sekarang.. yang mesti ditinggal atau diselamatkan itu dia sendiri. Apa sekarang dia akan memberikan perintah berbeda? Dari De Ruyter, dengan penuh keberanian... lalu ada kode lampu senter. "Lanjut ke Batavia! Jangan berhenti untuk mencoba menyelamatkan kami!" Terasa pesan itu to the point dan memelas sekali sebagai satu perintah terakhir dari Doorman. Walau begitu, perintah luar biasa itu tidak terlalu dikenang oleh sejarah. Di filem-filem, sering kita nonton ada tentara rela berkorban demi teman-temannya. "Lupakanlah saya! Selamatkanlah dirimu!" Klise bener. Tapi ini bukan filem. Perintah dari seorang laksamana, seorang commanding officer yang selama itu sering diledek dan dipertanyakan kapabilitasnya. Dia menyuruh sisa kapal di bawah komandonya, untuk pergi menyelamatkan diri, dan melupakan dia. Bahkan kapal yang dia suruh pergi itu bukan kapal Belanda pulak! Yang awaknya selama ini sering mengkritik dia. Perintah itu,.. menjadi suatu perlindungan hukum bagi kedua kapal tersisa, Perth dan Houston, yaitu bahwa mereka pergi atas perintah resmi. Sehingga Kapten Waller dan Rooks tidak perlu merasa bersalah karena tidak menolong para penyintas. Fakta ini menjadikan Doorman, menurut orang-orang Belanda, dan sekutu pada umumnya, layak dinobatkan sebagai pahlawan karena semangat rela berkorbannya itu. Yang jadi kena bencana alam, kadang malah ada yang tidak rela menjadi korban. Padahal itu sudah menjadi ketetapan Allah. Eh, kok jadi ke sono-sono? Sorry. Kebesaran jiwanya itu terus terbayang oleh Kapten Waller, walau di memoar Helfrich panglima ABDA-float, ada sindiran, bahwa secara teknis Perth dan Houston itu melanggar perintah. Bukankah di awal pemberangkatan Helfrich menyuruh 'menyerang sampai musuh hancur'? Kenapa musuhnya masih utuh, Perth dan Houston pergi? Dan yang bikin Helfrich gemas lagi, Perth dan Houston itu ke Tanjung Priok, bukannya ke Surabaya berkumpul dengan Exeter dan beberapa destroyer yang masih ada di sana. Mohon maklum, sebagai orang yang ingin mati-matian membela Pulau Jawa, Helfrich ingin semua kapal bertempur sampai mati! Ambil korban Jepang sebanyak-banyaknya. Tapi, Perth itu kapal Australia, dan Houston kapal Amerika. Mana mau mereka mati-matian demi Jawa yang posisinya sudah kejepit? Kucing juga ada yang kejepit. Kejepit pintu. Bodo amat. Dan lagi pula, arahan taktis Doorman, selepas bertempur dengan invasi timur, next-stopnya adalah Tanjung Priok di Batavia. Ya sudah, sebagai perwira tertinggi di situ, Kapten Waller dari Perth pun mengambil alih kepemimpinan. Houston dia tempatkan di bawah komandonya. Teknisnya bagaimana... itu tidak jelas. Mungkin Perth kirim sinyal ke Houston untuk bablas arah tenggara dan memberitahukan bahwa Perth akan mengikut dari belakang. Pakai sentolop atau kentongan, tidak ada informasinya di internet. Ouwo, ouwo pakai bahasa tarzan rasanya enggak. Yang jelas, itu masih tengah malam, gelap gulita.... Jadi begitulah.. Perth menyusul saudara Amerikanya itu, dalam situasi yang dramatis. Houston ngebut ke tenggara, mengarah ke Surabaya. Dentuman-dentuman makin lama makin jauh. Suasana mencekam. Ketegangan masih membayang di wajah semua orang. Untuk sejenak, ada perasaan lega. Walau di hati kecil, tentu ada kesedihan mengingat kehancuran rekan seperjuangan satu demi satu. Mungkin ada rasa marah juga, ingin membalas dendam... Lalu ada satu pengintai curiga. Dia merasa telah melihat luncuran torpedo di arah kiri.. semua sempat panik. "Sepertinya ada torpedo arah kiri! Arah kiri ada torpedo!" Yang mendengar peringatan itu segera meneruskan ke komandan. Selama itu.. sekutu masih tidak mengira torpedo tipe-93 bisa meluncur segitu jauhnya, dan terus mengira ada kapal selam ikut berlaga. Dan tetap mengira, bisa jadi kapal selamlah yang telah menghantam Kortenaer, Jupiter, Java, dan De Ruyter. Sekarang sepertinya muncul lagi! Itu perasaan mereka. Walau informasinya kurang sahih, untuk jaga-jaga, Kapten Rooks lalu memerintahkan tikung kanan tajam untuk menghindari kemungkinan torpedo di kiri, yang ternyata tidak ada! Nah, justru.. saat yang sama, di kanan itu ada Perth yang sedang coba menyalip si penjelajah Amerika supaya bisa memimpin di depan. Jadilah gerakan tak terduga itu bikin nyaris tabrakan. Widih! Gawat! Kedua kapal langsung jibaku lagi untuk penghindaran. Houston habis banting kanan, langsung banting kiri. Perth yang habis kanan, baru mau lurus, ditekuk kanan lebih jauh lagi! Susah payah serempetan bisa dihindari... tapi jaraknya sampai tinggal 20 meteran saja. Benar-benar nyaris. Para penumpang mungkin banyak yang palanya kejedot karena penghindaran tajam itu. Selamet, selamet.. Lalu, kedua kapten rundingan. Waller usul bablas ke Batavia dalam kecepatan 20 knot atau 37 km/jam. Rooks usul supaya kecepatannya digenjot 30 knot atau 56 km/jam. Kalau 37 km/jam, mungkin sore baru sampai, dan sepanjang hari terang ada bahaya serangan udara. Kalau dipercepat 56 km/jam, belum terlalu siang sudah sampai. Resiko serangan udara lebih kecil. Agak boros bbm saja. Dan di Priok, belum tentu bbm bisa diisi penuh. Tapi ya sudahlah. Jadi, kemudian sejarah mencatat, kedua kapal itu ngebut menembus malam meninggalkan di belakangnya riwayat legendarisnya dan meninggalkan sisa-sisa De Ruyter yang masih meledak-ledak menjelang tenggelam. Sampai De Ruyter hilang dari pandangan, para pengintai Houston sempat mencatat ada setidaknya sembilan ledakan keras. Di sekitar waktu ini, culunnya, Naval Commander Surabaya ujuk-ujuk mengabarkan berita berikut ini. "Konvoi ketemu! The air raid siren sounded at exactly 09:58 - war had arrived in Australia. He asks why more Australians don’t know about the continuous attacks that started on that day and continued until 12th November 1943 - some 21 months. In this paper Dennis provides and overview of the attacks and naval losses in more detail. Darwin, has changed much since my last visit some 38 years ago and it is dramatically different to the Darwin of 1942 which bore the brunt of the first ever attack by a foreign power on Australian soil. Why didn’t we know they were coming? Was our intelligence so bad or were we too complacent in 1942? The Government of the day had anticipated the Japanese would push south but “when” was the big question. Evacuations of civilians had already started by February 1942. On the morning of the fateful day there were many ships, both Naval and Merchant men, in the Port of Darwin along with a QANTAS flying boat “Camilla” and three Consolidated PBY Catalina flying boats of the USN, when 188 Japanese aircraft of various types, 36 Zero fighters, 71 dive bombers and 81 medium attack bombers commenced their first raid.

    CHAPTER 1 3 WAR IN THE FAR EAS T HE High Command of the Japanese Navy did not lightly enter upo n T the Pacific war, nor were they unduly confident of the outcome . It was subsequently learned that they knew they were entering a battle fo r sea communications ; and appreciated the extent of the sea powe r wielded by their prospective adversaries. They considered, however, that the great distances of the Pacific Ocean would be a factor in their favour , and pinned their hopes of success on the assumption that they could at the outset secure command of the Western Pacific and, with interior lines of communication and the establishment of boundary defences, isolate and hold it so as to ensure, at the least, a negotiated peace favourable to Japan . In effect, the Japanese aspired to do with an ocean area what the Germans aspired to do with a continental land mass ; to make of it a secure, self- contained fortress within geographical limits of their own determination and then, if unable to achieve outright victory by the complete military defeat of their enemies, to so sap their strength and endurance as to force them to come to terms . This, however, was to start from a false premise ; for in a world war it is impossible for any but the dominant sea power to "take as much and as little of the war as he will" ;1 and Japan, who was not in that posi- tion, sought to limit her activities to a very small proportion of tha t three-fifths of the earth's surface which the seas occupy.

Version Control: Draft 1.0 18/12/2020 NOTICE OF RACE Introduction This annual Regatta hosted by Nedlands Yacht Club commemorates the loss of HMAS Perth (D-29) at the ferocious 1st of March 1942 Battle of Sunda Strait during which 352 Australian servicemen perished along with Capt. Hector Waller, DSO, RAN. The regatta is an open invitational yardstick regatta for off the beach dinghies and catamarans, keelboats, trailable cruisers, sportsboats and multihulls. Racing will be divided into six divisions based on class performance. Prizes are awarded in each division. 1. ORGANISING AUTHORITY 1.1. The Organising Authority is the Nedlands Yacht Club (Inc.) – NYC. 1.2. The NYC regatta Committee is appointed “Race Committee”. 1.3. The “Officer of the Day” (OOD) is the NYC Regatta Committee representative with the authority of the “Race Committee”. 2. RULES 2.1.
